Preseaon All-State Showcase: Class of 2017/2018 Corner Infielders

On Saturday, February 14, more than 100 players from all corners of the state convened at Champions Baseball Academy in Nicholasville for the third annual Preseason All-State Showcase. Over the coming days we will continue to take a look at all players who participated in the event.

Below we take a look at the Class of 2017 and 2018 corner infielders who were in attendance. This is position player analysis only. Those players who also pitched at the event will have their pitching performance featured in a separate article.

class of 2017 corner infielders

Trent Shelby, 3B, L/R, McCracken County HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect, left-handed hitter hits from an open stance, closes off front side with a toe tap and short stride, uses lower half torque in swing, shorter swing path with extension through contact, line drive type hitter with flashes of power to the pull side, showed better measurables than at previous events with 7.51 60-yard dash and 85 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows good athleticism at the corner, good footwork and plays through the ball, soft hands, 75 mph velocity across the infield, continues to show strides in overall game.

Will Moriarty, RHP/1B, R/R, South Oldham HS, 2017
6-foot-4, 185-pound prospect has added 10 pounds to frame, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, smooth load, creates some lift with swing, ball jumps when he squares it up, shows occasional power to the gaps, showed a jump in exit velocity at 88 mph, ran a 7.32 60-yard dash. Defensively, shows soft hands, solid footwork around the bag, good arm strength across the infield at 80 mph, continues to show improvements as a hitter at each event.

Luke Price, RHP/1B, L/R, CAL, 2017
6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, hands are loose, shows projectable power to all fields, ball jumps off bat with occasional backspin carry, ran an improved 7.70 60-yard dash, 82 mph exit velocity, left-handed hitter to keep a close eye on with power potential. Defensively, participated at both corner infield spots, showed 75 mph velocity across the infield, continues to improve lateral movement and athleticism, projects better as a first baseman currently.

Eddie Satisky, RHP/3B, R/R, Lafayette HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect, right-handed hitter starts in a wide stance, brings front foot back in load, shows good strength in swing, good use of lower half torque while maintaining balance, generates good bat speed, 88 mph exit velocity was a significant jump from last summer, ran 8.20 60-yard dash, shows power to the pull side, has potential to be a right-handed power bat at the next level. Defensively, shows solid corner actions and adequate hands, ability to throw accurately on the move, good arm strength at 83 mph across the infield.

Reece Ison, RHP/3B, R/R, Prestonsburg HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a tall stance, uses a short stride, short swing path with good extension through contact, maintains good balance through finish, line drive type hitter and has developed some gap power, 81 mph exit velocity, ran an improved 7.55 60-yard dash. Defensively, shows playable hands with average lateral movement, can play through the slow roller more aggressively, showed a jump in arm strength at 78 mph across the infield, has made noticeable improvements to overall game.

Austin Shepherd, 3B/RHP, R/R, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 186-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, uses a leg kick trigger with a short stride, short swing path that lacks extension at times, line drive type hitter with middle to pull approach, showed an increase in exit velocity from previous event at 81 mph, ran a 7.60 60-yard dash (7.45 at previous event). Defensively, showed a big jump in arm strength at 77 mph across the infield, soft hands, good lateral movement, good body control with ability to throw accurately on the move.

Baylor Napier, 1B, L/L, Franklin County HS, 2017
6-foot, 190-pound prospect, left-handed hitter hits from a slightly open stance, squares front side with a toe tap and short stride, smooth load with good rhythm, loose swing with some quickness in hands, line drive type hitter with ability to use all fields, ran 7.65 60-yard dash, 82 mph exit velocity. Defensively, soft hands, good athleticism around the first base bag, 72 mph velocity across the infield, an interesting left-handed hitter to keep an eye on.

Nicolas Nelson, RHP/3B, R/R, Mason County HS, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, stays quiet and shows some hand quickness, minimal load, line drive type swing with extension through contact, hit several line drives in his round, ran 7.95 60-yard dash, 79 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows adequate hands, average footwork, arm is loose and athletic, long high-3/4 release with 78 mph velocity across the infield.

Rece Carter, LHP/1B, L/L, McCracken County HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 210-pound prospect, left-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, early stride gets him to front side early at times, longer swing path, line drive type hitter, ran an 8.09 60-yard dash, 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows soft hands, good footwork around the first base bag, arm is loose and athletic, 77 mph velocity across the infield.

Brynin Boykin, 1B/3B, R/R, Lexington Catholic HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect, hits from a slightly open stance, squares front side with a toe tap and mid-length stride, flat bat path, line drive type hitter, shows bat speed for age, 86 mph exit velocity, ran 7.66 60-yard dash, offensive prospect to keep an eye on as he adds more strength to frame. Defensively, shows the ability to play both corner infield spots, moves fluidly, arm is loose, good arm strength for young prospect at 78 mph across the infield, definite high-follow in 2018 class.

Chase Thomas, RHP/1B, R/R, CAL, 2018
5-foot-9, 130-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, gets close to arm bar creating some length in swing, line drive type hitter with level swing path, average bat speed, 75 mph exit velocity, ran 7.77 60-yard dash, young prospect with solid offensive foundation to build from as he gets physically stronger. Defensively, shows sure hands, average footwork, loose arm with good arm strength for age, 74 mph across the infield.

Cole McKay, RHP/1B/OF, R/R, Eastern HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 150-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from an open stance, uses a toe tap timing mechanism with a long stride, long swing path that gets uphill at times, mid to opposite field approach, ran a 7.77 60-yard dash, 76 mph exit velocity. Defensively, as a first baseman shows average hands with decent movement around the bag, arm is loose and athletic, 74 mph arm across the infield. As an outfielder, can be more aggressive in playing through the ball, shows good arm strength for young prospect at 77 mph.
