Preseason All-State Showcase: Class of 2014 Pitchers

The Preseason All-State Showcase saw 14 pitchers from the 2014 class take the mound to throw bullpen sessions.  Several of these pitchers showed they have the ability to pitch at the next level, and in fact, two from this group have committed to schools since the conclusion of the event.  Preston Frommeyer has committed to Kentucky Wesleyan, and Dalton Pope to Southeastern (Iowa) CC.

Below is a look at the Class of 2014 pitchers from the event.

Preston Frommeyer, RHP/OF, McCracken County HS, 2014
6-foot, 170-pound prospect, lean and athletic frame with projection, uses shorter arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, arm is loose and quick, has a tendency to throw across his body, fastball sat 84-87 and is mainly straight, curveball shows some late 11/5 action at 73-74 mph which he gets around at times leaving it flat, curveball has the makings of a good pitch with continued development, throws changeup with good arm action at 79 mph that displays good run and sink, has committed to Kentucky Wesleyan since the event.

Griffin Neuer, RHP/OF, Lexington Catholic HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 180-pound prospect with athletic build, frame projects well, arm is quick and he works through multiple arm slots, his fastball sat 83-84 mph from both the high 3/4 and low 3/4 slot and he showed the ability to command it, fastball shows good arm-side life from both slots but even harder run and sink from the low 3/4 slot, showed good command of 68-70 mph from both arm slots, changeup sat 70-73 mph with heavy arm-side run and fading action, interesting prospect on the mound who continues to show the ability to be effective from multiple arm slots.

Dalton Pope, RHP, Bourbon County HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 220-pound RHP with physical frame, throws through a high 3/4 arm slot, arm shows some quickness, fastball sat 84-86 mph with occasional arm-side run, breaking ball shows sharp and late 11/5 action at 73-76 mph, showed solid command of the breaking ball, changeup sat 76-78 mph with some cutting action and needs continued development as he tends to get around it.  Pope shows good arm strength and has committed to Southeastern Iowa Comm College since the event.

Jack Noftsger, RHP, Lafayette HS, 2014
6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect, strong and athletic frame, uses long arm action, loose arm, arm slot varies between 3/4 and high 3/4, showed an increase in velocity from previous event, fastball sat 81-83 mph and touched 85, throws two different breaking pitches, a 72-75 mph cirveball with late 11/5 action, and a 74 mph slider with similar action, good command of both breaking pitches, changeup was thrown with good arm action at 72-75 mph with good run and sink, solid arm still available in 2014 class.

Alex Briney, LHP, Nelson County HS, 2014
6-foot-3, 175-pound prospect with lanky build, frame projects well, uses long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, arm is loose, repeatable delivery, fastball sat 79-82 and touched 83 with some arm side run and sink, showed good command of 61-63 mph curveball that shows 12/6 and occasional 1/7 action, curveball has progressively gotten better, changeup is a solid pitch at 70-71 mph with fade thrown with good arm action, solid left-handed arm still available in the 2014 class.

Tyler Spalding, LHP/OF, Nelson County HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect with strong frame, shows a quick arm that is loose and athletic, works through a high 3/4 arm slot, fastball sat 82-83 mph (have seen up to 84) with late arm-side run, showed good command of 67 mph curveball with 2/8 action, tends to slow arm down on curveball, changeup sat 77-78 mph and needs continued development with more velocity difference off fastball and better feel, solid unsigned left-handed arm .

Jalen Stith, RHP, Lafayette HS, 2014
6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect with athletic build and some projectability, uses long arm action through a 3/4 to high 3/4 arm slot, fastball is mainly straight at 79-81 mph touching 82 (have seen up to 83 at previous event), throws a 65-67 mph curveball with 11/5 action and 71-73 mph slider with sharp/late break, slider is the better of the two breaking balls and he showed better command of it, changeup is solid at 74-75 mph with some sink and fade, solid unsigned arm in the 2014 class.

Willie Poe, LHP, Lexington Catholic HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect, average build with some projection, uses short arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, quick and loose arm, deliberate delivery, fastball sat 80-81 mph with good arm side run and sink, struggled some with command of 75-77 mph cutter, curveball showed sharp and late 1/7 action at 70-72 mph, good arm speed on 71-73 mph changeup that shows good sink and fade, good pitchability, solid unsigned left-handed arm.

Robby Skarvan, LHP, St. Xavier HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect , lean and athletic frame with projection, uses long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, works from the stretch only, fastball sat 78-79 mph with late arm-side life (have seen fastball up to 81), curveball wasn’t as sharp as in the past at 63-66 mph with gradual 12/6 action, slows arm some on 65-67 mph changeup.

Alex Basil, RHP, Edmonson County HS, 2014
6-foot-4, 210-pound prospect, athletic frame, uses long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, drop and drive type delivery, fastball sat 80-82 mph and was mainly straight on this occasion, struggled some with command of 65-67 mph curveball, changeup showed occasional cutting action at 72-74 mph, good command of the changeup, has potential to pitch at next level.

Cody Kalinowski, 1B/OF/LHP, Lexington Christian Academy, 2014
6-foot-2, 193-pound prospect with athletic frame, uses long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, fastball showed late sink at 78-79 mph, tends to get under curveball at times leaving up in the zone, shows gradual 1/7 action at 62-63 mph, showed good arm action on changeup at 69-70 mph which showed mainly cutting action on this occasion.

Connor Lindsay, RHP, East Jessamine HS, 2014
6-foot, 160-pound prospect with lean and lanky build, projectable frame, has a tendency to land open, uses long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, average arm speed, fastball sat 75-77 mph with occasional arm-side run, curveball sat 64-68 mph which he gets under at times, curveball showed sharper break when he stays on top, throws 69-71 mph changeup with good arm speed, changeup shows good fading action and throws it for strikes.

James Moore, RHP/SS, Bath County HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 150-pound prospect, slender frame with room to add, sider-armer showed good command of 74-76 mph fastball that touched 77 with occasional arm-side run, slows arm some on 60-64 mph curveball that showed 10/4 action, changeup showed good run and sinking action at 68-69 mph and he showed good feel for it, interesting prospect on the mound due to his arm slot.

Isaac Stidham, OF/RHP, Ryle HS, 2014
5-foot-10, 150-pound prospect with lanky build, uses long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, fastball is straight at 74-76 mph, showed limited command of 58-60 mph curveball with gradual 11/5 action, changeup showed some slight run and sink at 69-71 mph thrown with near fastball arm speed, good command of his changeup.
