Q & A with Cornell Commit Ray Brewer (Sayre HS)

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

Ray Brewer, RHP/1B, Sayre HS, Class of 2013

PBR: Why did you choose Cornell?

Brewer: I wanted a school with great baseball and great academics, which Cornell has both.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Brewer: I was considering a lot of schools, but Cornell was the best fit for me.

PBR: Did recently having Tommy John surgery affect the number of scholarship offers you received?

Brewer: I lost all of my scholarship opportunities due to the surgery, but was very glad to still have the opportunity to play at Cornell.

PBR: Where did the Cornell coaching staff first see you play?

Brewer: WWBA in Georgia

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your freshman year?

Brewer: Middle of the lineup hitter and pitcher (to be determined)

PBR: What would you consider your biggest strength as a player?

Brewer: My hitting and pitching. At this point in my career I don’t see one as better than the other, and neither do most of the schools that recruited me, and therefore I will do both until I am forced to choose.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on your baseball career?

Brewer: I have had a lot of people and coaches that have had huge impacts on my career, but all fall short on the influence my parents have had on me. They were always there for me and understood when to push me and when to let me do it on my own, which made me grow both as a player and as a person.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer?

Brewer: East Coast Grays

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment?

Brewer: Beating LCA sophomore year to go to the all A state tournament.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you have faced in the state of Kentucky?

Brewer: Ryne Combs (Kentucky Mr. Baseball) or Walker Beuhler (Vandy)

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you have pitched against in the state of Kentucky?

Brewer: Micheal Boulmer (Lexington hitter of the year)

PBR: What are your goals for your senior season at Sayre?

Brewer: Hit .475 +, 10+ home runs, and have over 40 RBI’s.  I can’t pitch this year so I will only DH.
