Top Prospect Games: Team Maroon Pitcher Analysis

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

The PBR Kentucky Top Prospect Games took place June 16-17 at Western Kentucky University and afforded close to 120 players from around the state the opportunity to showcase their abilities to the PBR Kentucky staff and many college coaches in attendance. The following is a look at the pitchers who took the mound for Team Maroon. This is pitcher analysis only. Those pitchers who also played a position at the event will have that evaluation featured in a subsequent article.

Michael Higgins, RHP, South Oldham HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 165-pound RHP uses long arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, minimal effort in delivery, good direction with lower half, fastball sat 81-85 mph touching 86 once, showed a 67-69 mph curveball with sharp 11/5 action when he stays on top of it, walked one and struck out two in his first inning of work, hit two batters, allowed a hit, and struck out one in his second inning. Higgins was just getting back on the mound after an injury kept him out most of the spring. He showed better velocity in February with an 85-87 mph fastball that touched 89.

Tanner Robins, RHP/2B, Mercer County HS, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound RHP, quick arm that works through a high-3/4 slot, good rhythm in delivery with regular effort, works quickly, mostly straight fastball sat 81-84 mph touching 85, throws a 72-74 mph curveball with solid 11/5 action, has potential to develop additional velocity, allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out one in his two innings of work.

Stuart Posey, RHP, Bowling Green HS, 2016
6-foot, 170-pound RHP, uses long arm action, works through a high-3/4 to over the top arm slot, lands slightly open on occasion, quick arm, adds and subtracts from fastball at 80-85 mph with occasional cut action, throws a 66-70 mph curveball with 11/5 action, throws strikes with the two-pitch mix, allowed one hit and struck out one in two scoreless innings of work in game action, interesting mound prospect with some upside.

Garrett Wilson, OF/RHP, Bullitt East HS, 2016
5-foot-11, 165-pound RHP uses long arm action through an over the top arm slot, minimal effort delivery, occasional downward tilt on fastball, fastball sat 79-82 mph, didn’t show a breaking ball in his outing, threw a 72 mph changeup with good arm action, walked one and allowed no hits in his one inning of work.

Dixon Craft, RHP/1B, Christian County HS, 2016
6-foot-, 205-pound RHP uses shorter arm action and works through a high-3/4 to over the top arm slot, regular effort in delivery and lands square to the plate, throws strikes, fastball sat 80-82 mph and is mostly straight, showed good feel for 71-72 mph curveball with solid 11/5 action, induced three fly ball outs in one perfect inning of work on the mound.

Evan Jenkins, RHP, McNicholas HS (OH), 2017
6-foot-3, 170-pound RHP with lanky frame that projects well, uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, quick arm, lands closed and throws slightly across body, struggled to command fastball that sat 81-83 mph touching 84, fastball consistently missed up, threw one 67 mph curveball in the dirt, has good potential with his frame and quick arm with some refinement of mechanics.

Rook Ellington, OF/RHP, McCracken County HS, 2018
6-foot, 160-pound RHP works through a high-3/4 arm slot and shows above average velocity for age, fastball shows occasional cut action and sat 76-78 mph touching 80 on one occasion, showed a 62 mph curveball with gradual 11/5 action, throws a 60-62 mph knuckleball, throws consistent strikes, gave up an infield single and struck out two (one swinging on knuckleball) in two innings of work .

Adam Stone, C/RHP, University Heights, 2016
6-foot-3, 200-pound RHP uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, regular effort in delivery, fastball is straight and sat 77-79 mph touching 80 on one occasion, showed a 69 mph curveball with 12/6 action and a 64 mph changeup that he tends to slow arm on, throws strikes, allowed two hits in his one inning of work on the mound.

Chase Collins, 1B/LHP, St. Xavier HS, 2017
6-foot, 160-pound lefty works through a low-3/4 to sidearm slot, throws across body and falls off first base side, fastball sat 65-67 mph, throws a 57-58 mph curveball with gradual sweeping action, throws strikes, allowed a leadoff single and then retired the side in order in his one inning of work.

Nicholas Stevens, 3B/RHP, Southern HS, 2016
6-foot-2, 195-pound RHP works through a low-3/4 to ¾ arm slot with minimal effort, fastball shows occasional arm-side run at 71-73 mph, throws a 60-63 mph curveball with sweeping 10/4 action, walked one and allowed one hit in his one inning of work on the mound.
