Transformation Tuesday: 2020 RHP Adam Weihe

Chris Fuller
Kentucky Director of Scouting

One of the things I enjoy most is tracking a player's progress throughout their high school career. Getting the opportunity to see a player multiple times leads to us being able to feature the player's strides they make in their pursuit of playing at the next level.

Welcome to Transformation Tuesday, a feature that will include a player who has made big strides over the course of their high school career. It may be an uncommitted player, or one who has already committed but made huge strides from the first time we saw them.

Today we take a look at Atherton 2020 RHP Adam Weihe. While a lot of the Transformation Tuesday articles have, and will, focus on a player's development over a period of few years, this one is different in that Weihe has made a significant transformation in just a few short months.

Exactly four months ago today, Weihe showed he was a young arm to keep an eye on at the Legends/Sundevils Scout Day. Fast forward to last week's Kentucky College Prospect Showcase, and the 6-foot-2, 197-pound right-hander flashed a big jump in velocity and much improved command of all his pitches while also adding a slider to his arsenal. A more in depth look at his improvements follows below.

Scouting Report

1/14/18 - Max FB: 84, FB: 82-84, CB: 71-73, CH: 77-80, SL: 75-76
6-foot-2, 197-pound RHP has made huge strides since September. Showed an ability to throw all pitches for strikes. Arm is clean and loose and he showed a big jump in velocity while working through an over the top slot. Projects for additional velocity moving forward. Curveball was harder and sharper than in the fall with downer action, and he has added a slider to his arsenal that shows late break. Has some feel for the changeup that will benefit from more consistent velocity difference off the fastball. Weihe has put himself in the conversation as one of the top RHP's in the 2020 class, and it would not be surprising in the least to see him continue to rise.

 9/23/17 - Max FB: 81, FB: 78-80, CB: 65-68, CH: 72-75
Projectable RHP with clean arm action that works through an over the top slot. Had some trouble repeating delivery and getting over front side consistently, leaving pitches up and arm side, fastball is mostly straight, curveball shows gradual 12/6 action at it's best, good arm speed on straight changeup. There's a lot to like about the young RHP as his upside is obvious and there is likely more velocity and command to come.
