Unsigned Senior Games: Team Navy Pitcher Analysis

The Unsigned Senior Games event saw more than 80 uncommitted class of 2015 players convene at Northern Kentucky University on August 16-17.  The following is a look at pitchers who took the mound for Team Navy during the event.  This is pitcher analysis only.  Those players who were also position players at the event will have their position player analysis in a subsequent article.

Matthew Wilburn, RHP, Garrard County HS, 2015
6-foot-1, 215-pound prospect, large frame, limited projection, works through high ¾ arm slot, lower half stays online, loads hips, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 82-84 touching 85 with good arm-side run and occasional sink, good command of 71-73 mph curveball with sharp 11/5 action, pounds the strike zone, allowed two hits and struck out two in two innings of work

Ricky West, RHP/OF, Ballard HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 193-pound prospect, strong lower half, uses long and loose arm action, high ¾ slot, quick arm, regular effort in delivery, lower half stays online, fastball sat 83-85 from windup, touched 86, 82-83 from stretch, fastball showed occasional slight arm-side run, 68-70 mph curveball with sharp 11/5 action, 70 mph changeup with some fade, allowed three hits, three walks, and struck out three in two innings of work.

Nicholas Hoffman, RHP, Trinity HS, 2015
6-foot-4, 200-pound prospect, big frame with projection, long arm action, high ¾ slot, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 80-82 touching 83 and is straight, 68-71 mph curveball showed short 11/5 break, 72-74 mph changeup thrown with good arm action, works changeup at bottom of the zone, allowed no hits and two walks with one strikeout in two innings of work, have seen slightly better velocity from Hoffman in the past.

Jonathan Osborne, RHP, Hendersonville HS (TN), 2015
6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect, athletic frame with some projection, long arm action, loose arm, high ¾ slot, lower half stays online, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 79-81 touching 82 with occasional arm-side run, drops down slightly on curveball, curveball sat 66-69 mph with 11/5 action, tended to bury 73-75 mph changeup, works quickly, allowed three singles and no walks in two innings of work, all outs recorded on ground balls, potential for more velocity.

Cole Lyons, RHP/2B, Apollo HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 150-pound prospect, lanky frame with projection, short arm action, ¾ to high ¾ slot, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 79-81 touched 82, fastball varied between occasional slight arm-side run and occasional cutting action, tended to get around 68-69 mph curveball, solid 73-74 mph changeup thrown with good arm action, allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out four in two innings of work, has potential for additional velocity.

Avery Lane, SS/RHP, St. Xavier HS, 2015
5-foot-9, 150-pound prospect, slender build, uses long arm action, high ¾ slot, loose arm, good rhythm, regular effort, fastball sat 77-80 mph with some late sink, 69-72 mph curveball showed sharp 11/5 action, commands both pitches well, uses sinking fastball to induce ground balls, allowed three hits and struck out one in two innings of work, arm works, potential for more velocity.

Johnny Eblin, RHP, Campbell County HS, 2015
6-foot-3, 170-pound prospect, lanky build offers projection, long arm action, high ¾ arm slot, lower half stays online, easy effort in delivery, fastball sat 77-79 mph, curveball sat 60-62 with 11/5 action, commands curveball well, showed a 70 mph changeup, pounds the zone at each event and gets hitters out, allowed one hit and struck out one in two innings of work.

Nick Niehaus, RHP/1B, Dixie Heights HS, 2015
6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect, large frame, uses short arm action, over the top slot, lifts hands over head in windup, fastball sat 78-80 touching 81 and is straight, lacked command of 65-66 mph curveball with minimal action, retired side in order after hitting first batter with a curveball in his one inning of work.

Ben Cole, LHP, Greenwood HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 145-pound prospect, slight build, works through a ¾ arm slot, regular effort, fastball sat 71-73 mph, touched 75, fastball mostly straight, curveball showed gradual 1/7 action at 61-62 mph, consistently throws strikes, allowed five hits in two innings of work.

Joey Collins, RHP/1B, New Alnany HS (IN), 2015
6-foot, 185-pound prospect, strong frame, long arm action, over the top slot, regular effort in delivery, lands closed, fastball sat 68-70 mph and is straight, good command of 65-67 mph curveball with 12/6 action, throws strikes, allowed one hit in one inning of work.
