Unsigned Senior Spotlight: RHP Ian Hays (Henry Clay HS)

By Chris Fuller

Ian Hays, RHP, Henry Clay HS, Class of 2013

Today’s player spotlight is on unsigned senior Ian Hays, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed pitcher from Henry Clay HS in Lexington.

Hays has a lean, athletic frame that projects well.  He shows long and loose arm action and throws from a ¾ arm slot which contributes to good arm side run and sink on his 83-85 mph fastball.  He shows excellent command of a 74-77 mph change up with good sink that he throws with good arm action and fastball arm speed.   The change up is a legitimate strikeout pitch for Hays as he consistently locates it down in the zone and gets hitters to swing over top of it.  He also has good command of his 72-73 mph curveball that he mixes in to keep hitters off balance.

With a goal of playing collegiately at the Division 1 level, Hays is working hard on his body this off-season to add a few mph on his fastball and feels like he is already seeing results.  Given his drive and work ethic, it would not be surprising in the least to see his mid-80’s fastball become a high-80’s fastball by the time he takes the mound for Henry Clay in March.
