Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes a reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our always popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the Bayou State.  Each week, we will be releasing our Player and Pitcher of the Week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, as well as additional content that is focused strictly on high school baseball in Louisiana.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.  If you have not received a questionnaire and would like to fill one out, please email State Director Alex Armand at [email protected]

Team Outlook

The Bogalusa Lumberjacks head into the 2025 season with something to prove. Under the guidance of head coach James Michael Cummings, the Lumberjacks are looking to build on a 12-11 record in 2024 that ended with a tough first-round playoff exit. Competing in the demanding District 7-3A, Bogalusa will lean on its trademark heart and grit as it strives to overcome challenges in experience and fundamentals.

The Lumberjacks may lack the experience of some of their district rivals, but they make up for it with an undeniable competitive spirit. This team plays with passion and a never-say-die attitude that allows them to stay in games even when the odds are stacked against them.

That heart will be crucial as Bogalusa navigates the growing pains of integrating less experienced players into key roles. The ability to learn from tough games and bounce back stronger will be a defining trait for this team.

The biggest hurdle for the Lumberjacks will be their inexperience. Many of their players are still adjusting to the speed and intensity of varsity-level baseball, and mistakes in the fundamentals—whether on defense, baserunning, or situational hitting—could cost them in close games.

Coach Cummings and his staff will prioritize developing clean, fundamentally sound baseball throughout the season. If the Lumberjacks can minimize errors and capitalize on scoring opportunities, they’ll be in a much better position to compete.

Bogalusa will look to a trio of returning players to set the tone for the 2025 season:

-Jaylon Keys: A versatile and reliable player, Keys will be counted on to deliver at the plate and in the field. His leadership and consistency will be critical as the younger players adjust to varsity competition.

-Dyron Jackson: Known for his athleticism and competitive edge, Jackson brings energy and grit to the lineup. His ability to spark rallies and make plays will be a key part of the team’s success.

-Jo Jo Mingo: Mingo is a player with untapped potential, and this season could be his breakout year. If he can take a step forward offensively and defensively, he could be a difference-maker for the Lumberjacks.

To find success in 2025, Bogalusa must focus on playing hard and clean. That means limiting defensive errors, executing in critical moments, and maintaining a relentless work ethic throughout the season.

Gaining experience quickly will also be vital. The Lumberjacks may face growing pains early, but if they can learn from those moments and improve game by game, they have the potential to surprise some of their more seasoned district opponents.

The 2025 Bogalusa Lumberjacks may not be the most experienced team in District 7-3A, but they have the heart and determination to compete with anyone. While this season will likely feature some ups and downs, the focus will be on steady improvement and building confidence.

If Coach Cummings’ squad can clean up their fundamentals and develop consistency, they could be a tough out come playoff time. With the leadership of Keys, Jackson, and Mingo, and the grit that defines this program, the Lumberjacks are a team that no opponent can afford to overlook.
