Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes a reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our always popular Game of the Week segment.
Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the Bayou State. Each week, we will be releasing our Player and Pitcher of the Week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, as well as additional content that is focused strictly on high school baseball in Louisiana.
*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches. If you have not received a questionnaire and would like to fill one out, please email State Director Alex Armand at [email protected]

Team Outlook
As the 2025 season approaches, the Dutchtown Griffins are poised to build on last year’s strong campaign with a deep and experienced pitching staff leading the way. Head Coach Chris Schexnaydre has high expectations for his squad, emphasizing the team’s ability to keep opponents in check and stay competitive in every ballgame. With a mix of returning talent, eager underclassmen, and fresh energy from a new addition to the coaching staff, this year’s Griffins are a team to watch.
Team Strengths
The Griffins’ greatest asset heading into the season is their pitching depth. Anchored by a core of experienced arms, Dutchtown’s staff has proven they can consistently limit opponents’ offensive output. Additionally, team defense is expected to be solid, providing a reliable foundation behind the mound. While the lineup features a blend of seasoned varsity players and juniors ready to make their mark, the Griffins’ ability to manufacture runs with their speed and situational hitting will be key to their success.
A challenge for Dutchtown will be replacing their starting catcher, senior Dylan Champagne, who suffered a season-ending knee injury during football. The team will need some time to gain experience, but their hard work in the fall provides optimism for growth throughout the season. On the coaching front, Coach Schexnaydre is super excited about the addition of Caleb Ricca to the coaching staff. Coach Schexnaydre told us that Coach Ricca has brought a new level of energy and enthusiasm, which has already made a positive impact on the team.
Top Returning Players
-Senior Casey McCoy: The Louisiana Tech recruit is a true two-way threat for the Griffins. At the plate, he hit .337 last season with 10 doubles and 2 home runs. On the mound, he was lights-out as a closer, posting an impressive 1.20 ERA over 11.2 innings pitched with 8 saves and 14 strikeouts. His leadership and ability to deliver in clutch situations make him a cornerstone of this year’s team.
-Junior Kason Johnson: The uncommitted junior proved to be a dependable arm as a sophomore, posting a 3-1 record with 1 save, a 2.00 ERA, and 28 strikeouts over 35 innings pitched. With another year of experience, he’s set to take on an even larger role in the rotation.
-Senior Cayden Hill: A South Arkansas College signee, Hill went 5-0 last season with a 2.69 ERA over 36 innings pitched and demonstrated the ability to give the Griffins quality starts. His veteran presence will be vital to the pitching rotation.
-Senior Coby Mitchell: The Delgado Community College recruit logged 17 innings pitched last season, going 2-2 with a 5.10 ERA. He’s expected to take on a bigger workload this year and provide additional stability to the pitching staff.

-Senior Caleb Wall: Another Delgado Community College signee, Wall posted a 4.20 ERA over 7 innings pitched in 2024. He adds further depth to a rotation that is already loaded with experience.
-Junior Cade Delaune: A key defensive piece for the Griffins, Delaune started 27 games last season and finished with a .260 average. With an offseason focused on improving his strength, speed, and overall game, he’s ready to take a big step forward this spring.
The Dutchtown Griffins enter the 2025 season with a combination of seasoned veterans and hungry underclassmen eager to prove themselves. With a deep pitching staff leading the way, the team has the tools to keep games close and give themselves a chance to win. While there will be an adjustment period behind the plate, the overall defensive strength and athleticism of the roster should help mitigate that challenge.
Coach Schexnaydre’s squad has embraced a competitive mindset throughout the offseason, and the addition of Caleb Ricca to the coaching staff has only fueled the team’s excitement. If the offense can find consistency and capitalize on opportunities, the Griffins could be a dangerous team come playoff time. Expect this group to compete hard every game and continue to grow as the season progresses.
