2025 Team Preview: New Iberia Senior High

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes a reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our always popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the Bayou State.  Each week, we will be releasing our Player and Pitcher of the Week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, as well as additional content that is focused strictly on high school baseball in Louisiana.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.  If you have not received a questionnaire and would like to fill one out, please email State Director Alex Armand at [email protected]

Team Outlook

New Iberia Senior High, AKA "NISH", finished the 2024 season with a 19-15 record and unfortunately did not make the LHSAA Non-Select D-I playoffs.  Head Coach Blayze Romero feels good about this year's team and Yellow Jacket fans should be excited, as they return a total of eight starters with a lot of versatility amongst the group.

Senior OF Mason Meyers is one of the veteran returners that Coach Romero is excited to have back again this season.  Coach Romero calls Meyers the "heartbeat" of the team and is an excellent defender and the team's leadoff hitter.

Fellow Senior Gerald Sonnier is a long 6'3" 180 lbs. atheltic first baseman who can also play the outfield.

Junior Myles Jones is arguably the most talented prospect on this year's squad.  With a 6'3" 170 lbs. frame, Jones is a really good runner who can go get it in centerfield and his speed plays on the basepaths as well.

Junior Gage Hayes is what Coach Romero calls "sneaky athletic" and can get on base in a variety of ways to go along with a strong arm from the outfield.  Hayes is also the most experienced arm returning for the Yellow Jackets this spring.

A young guy to keep an eye on is Freshman Nathan Leblanc who could earn time both on the mound and in the infield for NISH this season.

District 3-5A is always one of the toughest districts in the state with the "three-headed monster" of Barbe, Sam Houston, and Sulphur, plus Lafayette area teams such as Acadiana and Southside.  The good news about playing in the district is that you'll definitely be battle tested come playoff time, and you earn valuable power points when playing teams such as Barbe and Sam Houston that always seem to win 27 plus games during the regular season.  The goal is simple for Coach Romero and company, and that goal is to still be playing come playoff time in late-April this spring.  Will the Yellow Jackets have enough to make the playoffs this spring?  With eight returning starters and a ton of versatility on offense and defense, NISH seems to be in a good position to make the playoff this season.
