Team Outlook
The Port Barre Red Devils are poised for a bounce-back season in 2025 under the leadership of Head Coach Tyler Stevens. Returning nine players with significant varsity experience, this team is looking to build on a strong offseason and improve upon last year’s early playoff exit. The Red Devils are navigating a new district (5-2A) this spring, which presents both challenges and opportunities as they face unfamiliar opponents.
Coach Stevens is confident in his team’s defensive capabilities and offensive versatility, emphasizing a small-ball approach that has the players fully bought in. While pitching experience remains a concern, the depth on the mound and a commitment to team baseball give the Red Devils optimism heading into the season.
With a lineup featuring several experienced upperclassmen, Port Barre is expected to generate runs efficiently through a mix of contact hitting and situational execution. The Red Devils return a solid and experienced defensive unit that will provide stability as they break in a new starting catcher.
While there is depth on the mound, many of the pitchers are still developing varsity-level experience. Finding consistency in their pitching rotation will be key to the team’s success.
Top Returning Players
-Senior 2B Logan Valin: A steady presence in the middle infield, Valin anchors the defense with his range and reliability. Offensively, he brings a disciplined approach at the plate and is a key piece of the lineup.
-Senior SS Landon Valin: The shortstop pairs with his brother to form one of the most dependable middle-infield tandems in the district. Landon’s leadership and ability to handle pressure make him a cornerstone player for Port Barre.
-Senior 1B Trent Kimble: A strong presence at first base, Kimble provides both defensive stability and offensive power. He’s expected to be a run producer in the heart of the lineup.
-Senior RF Julian Armand: A reliable corner outfielder, Armand brings athleticism and a strong arm to the outfield while contributing solid at-bats at the plate.
-Junior P/INF Tylus Metrejean: A dual-threat player, Metrejean is developing into one of the team’s top young pitchers while also contributing as an infielder. His growth will be critical for the Red Devils this season.
-Junior P/OF Bailey Rideaux: Another versatile player, Rideaux will see time both on the mound and in the outfield. His athleticism and potential make him a valuable asset.
-Junior P/OF Austin Ellis: Ellis adds to the team’s pitching depth and provides an option in the outfield as well. His continued development will help address the pitching experience gap.
Top Underclassmen
-Sophomore C Kolton Bertrand: The sophomore catcher is stepping into a starting role this season. Bertrand has shown tremendous growth over the fall and will be tasked with handling a pitching staff that relies on depth and versatility. His defensive progress will be closely watched as the season unfolds.
The Red Devils are determined to make strides this spring after a 10-18 season in 2024. With a core group of returning players, the team has embraced a small-ball philosophy, which should maximize their offensive potential. While the pitching staff lacks varsity experience, Coach Stevens believes the depth available will compensate for that and allow the team to remain competitive in tight games.
Breaking in a new catcher and adapting to a fresh slate of district opponents will test Port Barre, but their defensive experience and team-first mentality make them a dangerous opponent. If the pitching staff can mature quickly and find consistency, the Red Devils have the potential to make a deeper playoff run in 2025. Expect a resilient and scrappy team that will be tough to beat in District 5-2A and beyond.
