2025 Team Preview: South Beauregard High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes a reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our always popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the Bayou State.  Each week, we will be releasing our Player and Pitcher of the Week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, as well as additional content that is focused strictly on high school baseball in Louisiana.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.  If you have not received a questionnaire and would like to fill one out, please email State Director Alex Armand at [email protected]

Team Outlook

The South Beauregard Golden Knights enter the 2025 season with high expectations following their dominant 2024 campaign, which culminated in a Non-Select Division III State Championship. Under the steady leadership of Head Coach Jeremy Deville, the Golden Knights bring back a strong nucleus of experienced position players and a team identity built on defense, speed, and poise. However, with the departure of key arms and the uncertainty surrounding Clayton Folks’ late-season return from ACL surgery, pitching experience will be the critical area to address as they look to defend their title.

Team Strengths

-Team Defense: South Beauregard boasts a lineup full of versatile and defensively sound players, including standout catcher Luke Fontenot, whose 1.93 pop time anchors a disciplined defensive unit.

-Experience: The Golden Knights return six position players and seven players with starting experience from their 2024 championship squad, giving them a significant edge in game situations.

-Team Speed: This team is loaded with speed on the basepaths, with Jed Henry (20 stolen bases in 2024), Noah Fontenot (16 SB), and Kade Jackson (20 SB) leading the way. Their ability to pressure opposing defenses is unmatched.

Team Weakness

-Pitching Experience: With senior southpaw Clayton Folks (10-0, 1.9 ERA) sidelined for most of the season, the Knights lack a proven, consistent rotation. While the talent is evident, their arms will need to develop quickly to compete at a championship level.

Key Returning Players

-Senior INF/RHP Luke Brister: A dual-threat leader, Brister hit .345 with 26 RBIs and three home runs while also posting a 2.00 ERA with two saves on the mound. His mid-80s fastball and experience will be pivotal to the pitching staff’s success.

-Junior MIF/RHP Jed Henry: Henry’s all-around game (.375, 27 runs, 28 RBIs, 20 SB) and ability to contribute on the mound (82-83 mph fastball) make him a dynamic returner for the Golden Kingths this season.

-Senior C Luke Fontenot: A defensive standout behind the plate with a reliable bat (.305, 17 RBIs), Fontenot is the glue for the Golden Knights’ defense.

-Senior MIF/RHP Noah Fontenot: A steady presence at the plate (.290, 16 SB) and an emerging arm on the mound with a strong changeup.

-Senior OF Cy Barrow: A consistent contributor (.303, 18 runs scored) and a reliable outfielder with solid speed and instincts.

-Senior 1B/RHP Christian Wold: A power-hitting corner infielder (.275, 16 RBIs) with a low-to-mid-80s fastball, Wold is expected to play a larger role on the mound this year.

-Senior LHP/OF Clayton Folks: Coming off ACL surgery, Folks was dominant on the mound last season finishing with a perfect 10-0 record and 1.90 ERA. If he can return for the playoffs, his impact could be game-changing.

-Senior OF Kade Jackson: A speedster who stole 20 bases last season and is looking to carve out a starting role in the outfield.

Top Underclassmen to Watch

-Sophomore RHP/INF Alex Baggett: With a fastball sitting 83-84 mph and topping out at 85, Baggett showed promise as a freshman, logging 11 varsity innings.

-Sophomore RHP Drew Smith: Another young arm with a low-to-mid-80s fastball who could be a key contributor as the season progresses.

-Sophomore C/DH Hunter Bellard: Started six games behind the plate as a freshman with a 2.0 pop time and projects as a future defensive anchor.

-Sophomore INF/OF Mason Richards: An athletic player with 6.7-second 60-yard dash speed who is fighting for a spot in the lineup.

With Folks sidelined for most of the season, South Beauregard will rely on a committee of arms to fill the void. Luke Brister and Jed Henry will lead the charge, supported by Christian Wold, Noah Fontenot, and a promising group of underclassmen, including Alex Baggett and Drew Smith. Carter Good, a 6’3” 200-pound right-hander who recently started pitching and has touched 85 mph, could also play a significant role. Developing consistency and finding a reliable rotation will be the key to their success on the mound.

The Golden Knights’ lineup is primed to score runs and play elite defense, but their ability to defend their State Title will depend heavily on how their pitching staff develops over the season. With Coach Deville at the helm and a talented group of returning players, South Beauregard is poised to be a contender once again. If the pitching comes together and Folks can return for a playoff push, the Golden Knights will once again be a dangerous team come May.
