2025 Team Preview: St. Charles Catholic High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes a reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our always popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the Bayou State.  Each week, we will be releasing our Player and Pitcher of the Week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, as well as additional content that is focused strictly on high school baseball in Louisiana.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.  If you have not received a questionnaire and would like to fill one out, please email State Director Alex Armand at [email protected]

Team Outlook

The St. Charles Catholic Comets enter 2025 with the same lofty expectations that have become the norm for this perennial power. Head Coach Wayne Stein’s program is built on consistency, preparation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, and the team will need all three as they move up in division this season. Coming off a runner-up finish in 2024, the Comets are eyeing their sixth straight state championship appearance, even as they face the challenge of replacing six players who are now competing at the collegiate level.

Though the roster is less deep than in years past, the cupboard is far from bare. The Comets return a strong core of experienced players and promising underclassmen who understand what it takes to succeed in one of the state’s premier programs. The strengths of this year’s team lie in pitching and defense—hallmarks of a program that prides itself on execution and toughness. Offensively, the team will need to replace significant production, but their history suggests they’ll find a way to make it work.

Team Strengths

-Pitching Depth: The Comets bring back two top arms in senior RHP Luke Dewhirst (Nunez commit) and sophomore RHP Landree Leblanc. Dewhirst brings veteran leadership and big-game experience, while Leblanc’s projectable frame and potential make him a rising star.

-Defense: With a group of versatile athletes returning, including several who play key positions up the middle, the Comets will rely on their defense to keep games close while their offense finds its rhythm.

Team Weaknesses

-Offensive Turnover: Replacing the production of six college-level players is no small task. While the returning players have talent, they’ll need time to grow into their expanded roles. This could lead to some growing pains early in the season as the team establishes its offensive identity.

Top Returning Position Players

-Senior CF Jackson Doster: A proven all-state performer and leader, Doster brings speed, defensive prowess, and a knack for delivering in big moments.

-Senior RHP/1B Luke Dewhirst: As the staff ace, Dewhirst will set the tone for a pitching unit that will be the backbone of this team. His ability to handle pressure and pitch deep into games makes him invaluable. In addition to his contributions on the mound, Dewhirst provides experience and a steady bat in the lineup.

-Junior MIF/RHP Dax Pregeant: A dynamic two-way player, Pregeant has a high ceiling with his ability to contribute both at the plate and on the mound.

-Sophomore MIF/RHP Landree Leblanc: A talented sophomore with the versatility to play the middle infield and pitch, Leblanc will be a key piece of the Comets’ future—and present. Already showing poise beyond his years, Leblanc’s development will be critical to the team’s success, especially in high-leverage situations.

-Sophomore LHP/1B Bryce Waguespack: At 6’1, 180 pounds, Waguespack has the size and skill to impact games on both sides of the ball. He's one of the more talented sophomore arms in the state with a mid-80's FB from a lower 3/4 slot.

Despite losing a significant group of seniors, St. Charles Catholic isn’t about to lower its expectations. The Comets have a strong foundation built on pitching and defense, and with Coach Stein at the helm, they’ll continue to prioritize preparation and execution. The transition to a new division adds intrigue, but this program thrives on challenges.

The 2025 season may bring a few more unknowns than usual, but the Comets have the pieces to make another deep postseason run. If their offense develops as the season progresses, don’t be surprised to see St. Charles Catholic playing for yet another State Title, which would be their 6th straight State Title game experience. After all, for the Comets, the names may change, but the expectations never do.
