2025 Team Preview: University Lab High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes a reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our always popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the Bayou State.  Each week, we will be releasing our Player and Pitcher of the Week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, as well as additional content that is focused strictly on high school baseball in Louisiana.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.  If you have not received a questionnaire and would like to fill one out, please email State Director Alex Armand at [email protected]

Team Outlook

The University Lab Cubs enter the 2025 season riding high after securing their first-ever state championship in 2024. With a solid mix of returning talent and promising underclassmen, U-High looks poised to defend their title while navigating the challenges of integrating new faces into key roles under the direction of first-year Head Coach Jon Ramsey.

U-High prides itself on its reliable and efficient defensive play, a cornerstone of their championship run in 2024. The Cubs are also dynamic on the basepaths and in the outfield, giving them a significant edge in creating offensive pressure and covering ground defensively.

Top Returning Position Players

-Senior SS Jake McCann: The heart and soul of the team, McCann is the Cubs' undisputed leader both offensively and defensively. As the team’s spark plug, his ability to set the tone at the plate and anchor the defense at shortstop will be critical to U-High’s success.

-Senior 1B/DH Ethan Hopkins: A powerful presence in the middle of the lineup, Hopkins will serve as the team's run-producing rock. His consistent bat provides a steady offensive foundation.

-Senior OF Caden Connor: With blazing speed, Connor is a dual threat on both offense and defense. He’ll track down balls in the outfield and create havoc on the basepaths.

-Junior 3B Lane Mixon: After starting at second base as a sophomore, Mixon transitions to a key role at third base. He’s expected to be a significant contributor at the plate and a reliable glove in the infield.

Top Returning Pitchers

-Junior RHP Brody Mayeux: A key piece of last year’s pitching staff, Mayeux brings experience and composure to the mound.

-Junior RHP Grant Sunstrom: Another important arm returning from 2024, Sunstrom’s ability to handle high-pressure situations will anchor the pitching staff.  The Louisiana Tech recruit was brilliant at the 2024 Future Games last summer, as he tossed two no-hit innings against Arkansas.

New Faces Who Will Make an Impact

-Senior 1B/DH Zach Joubert: A hard worker who has earned his spot, Joubert will contribute both offensively and defensively.

-Senior RHP/INF Luke Ewing: A versatile player who will see time on the mound and in the infield, Ewing adds depth and reliability.

-Junior OF Jaris Hamilton: With exceptional speed and power to the gaps, Hamilton is a weapon on offense and a key defender in the outfield.

-Junior LHP Nicholas Zeringue: Zeringue has made significant strides over the past year and is expected to be a vital part of the pitching rotation.

Underclassmen to Watch

-Sophomore RHP Grant Vollmer: At 6’6”, Vollmer’s size and potential stand out. He’s poised to make an impact on the varsity level with significant innings on the mound.

-Sophomore RHP/INF Sheppard Gammon: A talented and versatile prospect who will contribute both on the field and the mound.

-Sophomore C Mackie Musgrove: A young catcher with excellent communication skills and a strong foundation. As he matures, he has the potential to become an elite receiver behind the plate.

The Cubs are set up for another strong campaign in 2025, but they’ll face the challenge of blending their experienced core with a roster that includes several young, talented players. Jake McCann, Ethan Hopkins, Caden Connor, and Lane Mixon form a solid foundation both offensively and defensively, while Brody Mayeux and Grant Sunstrom anchor the pitching staff.

New contributors like Nicholas Zeringue, Jaris Hamilton, and Zach Joubert add depth and versatility, and the underclassmen trio of Vollmer, Gammon, and Musgrove represent the future of the program. While the team will need to overcome some inexperience in key roles, the combination of talent, speed, and defensive prowess makes the Cubs a formidable contender to repeat as state champions.
