All-State Games: Catcher Analysis

The PBR Louisiana All-State Games took place on November 7th at LSU Eunice. The event featured over 80 prospects from all high school classes. 

We began our post-event content in the weeks following the event with statistical leaderboards and quick hits. Today, we resume our coverage of this loaded event with scouting reports on all catchers in attendance.

Jaxon Adams C / 3B / Denham Springs, LA / 2023

Athletic 5’ 11”, 150 lbs. frame with room to add strength. The 2023 RHH hitter works from an athletic, balanced stance; small stride with balance throughout swing. Creates solid bat speed with a gap-to-gap approach, flat bat path that stays on plane through contact resulting in an exit velocity of 83 mph.  Developing athlete, showed improved actions during the infield workout with clean exchanges into a high-¾ release producing an improved positional velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 7.50 60-yard dash. Posted a 2.00-2.07 pop time behind the plate and a positional velocity of 72 mph. 

Kason Alexander C / 3B / Archbishop Rummel , LA / 2023

Physical 5’11” 193 lbs. frame. The 2023 RHH hits from a slightly tall, open stance; no negative move in the load as he strides back to the pitcher, landing athletic.  Uses his hands and a direct bat path to create hard contact, really using the middle of the field resulting in an 88 mph exit velocity.  Still developing behind the plate; 2.22-2.32 pop time with average footwork and exchanges.  Ran a 7.60 in the 60.  

Hunter Azemar C / 3B / Southside, LA / 2023

Strong and compact 5’10” 175 lbs. frame. The RHH hits from a balanced stance with an up and down load working from slightly open to even. Hands start shoulder height with rhythm into an aggressive, slightly uphill path with extension through contact producing an exit velocity of 89 mph.  Defensively, uses a balanced setup behind the plate, stays low to the ground.  Good receiver with clean exchanges and simple footwork to produce a positional velocity of 74 mph and a 2.01-2.16 pop time. Ran a 7.70 in the 60.

David Brumfield C / 3B / Albany , LA / 2021

Strong 5’10” 180 lbs. frame. At the plate, the RHH begins in a tall, open stance with rhythm in his hands, using a leg kick to get back to center.  Produced an 84 mph exit velocity, showing extension through the baseball and a slightly uphill bat path.  The 2021 C showed above average arm strength as he produced a positional velocity of 78 mph.  Clean exchanges, good footwork, and a short, quick arm action produced a pop time of 1.85-1.97. Throws had carry and were accurate to second base.  Ran a 7.47 in the 60.  

Carson Carey C / RHP / Airline, LA / 2022

Physical, imposing 6’2” 185 lbs. frame. The state’s #2 ranked catcher in the 2022 class hits from a tall, balanced stance starting slightly open, using a modified leg kick to get his swing off.  Violent, aggressive swing with a flat bat path and good extension through the baseball produced an exit velocity of 97 mph; one of the event’s best.  Behind the plate, showed strong hands, consistent footwork, and accurate throws to second base that produced a positional velocity of 78 mph and a 1.94-2.08 pop time.  Much improved runner, as he posted a 7.54 60 yard dash time.

Cameran Christ C / RHP / Live Oak, LA / 2023

 Developing athlete; 6'0" 185 lbs. frame with room to add strength. The Mississippi State commit posted a 77 mph positional velocity with carry on his throws to second base.  Quality receiver with average footwork and release resulted in a 1.95-2.00 pop time.  The 2023 LHH had a professional round of BP, working the ball into the opposite field gap in the early part of his BP round and finished it off by driving balls to the pull side, showing increased power that resulted in a 92 mph exit velocity.  Threw 86 mph from the OF and posted a 7.22 in the 60.

Slay Coleman C / RHP / Elizabeth , LA / 2023

Tall, athletic 6’1” 170 lbs. frame with room to add strength.  The RHH hit from a balanced, athletic stance with his hands held at shoulder height.  Some weight pre-set in his back leg.  Simple load and movement.  Really uses his back leg to create bat speed, driving balls gap to gap that produced an exit velocity of 92 mph.  Behind the plate, showed average footwork with quick exchanges and developing arm strength that produced an improved positional velocity of 73 mph and a 2.01-2.14 pop time.  An improved runner as well, as he ran a 7.29 in the 60. 

Kyle DeBarge SS / 3B / Barbe, LA / 2021

Athletic 5’8” 150 lbs. frame with room to add strength.  The 2021 University of Louisiana signee got behind the plate as a catcher for the first time in five years at the Louisiana All-State Games.  Came out of his stance slightly early, but showed excellent footwork, quick exchanges and a plus arm that produced an event best 83 mph positional velocity and a 1.76-1.85 pop time.  Quality receiver and blocker, as he threw out a would be base stealer during the game portion on a block and recover situation.  The RHH hit from an athletic, slightly open stance, using a simple up and down load to get his swing off.  Uphill bat path, showed present pull side power that produced a 94 mph exit velocity.  As an infielder, showed soft hands, advanced footwork, and a plus arm that produced a 92 mph positional velocity across the diamond.  A really good runner as well, as he posted a 6.70 in the 60.

Sam Eppinette C / RHP / Fontainebleau , LA / 2023

Physical 6’1” 190 lbs. broad frame.  The RHH hit from a tall, open stance using a leg kick to get into his hitting position with his hands held high.  Stays on plane through the baseball, really using the middle of the field well.  Produced an 89 mph exit velocity.  Behind the plate, showed a balanced and strong set-up, quality receiver and blocker.  Short, quick arm action with accurate throws to second base that produced a 72 mph positional velocity and pop times of 2.03-2.10.  Ran a 7.76 in the 60.

Brayden Kuriger C / OF / St. Amant, LA / 2022

Athletic, physical 6’0” 170 lbs. frame with room to add strength.  The RHH hit from a slightly tall stance, hands held high, with weight pre-loaded in his back leg.  Used a toe tap load to get his swing off.  Showed a lot of quick twitch in his hands with good extension through the baseball that produced an exit velocity of 89 mph.  Quick release behind the plate, with average footwork and developing arm strength that produced pop times of 2.05-2.12 and a positional velocity of 74 mph.  Showed above average arm strength from the OF, posting a positional velocity of 88 mph.  Quality runner and athlete.  Recorded a 7.18 in the 60.  

Caleb Ougel C / 3B / Vandebilt Catholic, LA / 2022

Wide shoulders, narrow hips 5’9” 175 lbs. frame. The RHH hits from a wider, open stance with his upper half slightly crouched over the plate.  Uses a toe tap load with rhythm in his hands.  Contact hitter who really tries to hit the ball to the opposite gap.  Stayed in his back leg and behind balls throughout his swing that resulted in a 90 mph exit velocity.  Displayed quick feet and exchanges behind the dish that produced pop times of 1.95-2.00 and a positional velocity of 78 mph.  Ran a 7.29 in the 60.

Clayton Pourciau C / 1B / Catholic(BR), LA / 2023

Strong, physical 5’11” 190 lbs. frame. The University of Louisiana commit hits from a wider stance with his hands held high, using a simple load and short stride.  Aggressive, slightly uphill bat path showing present gap to gap power that produced a 93 mph exit velocity.  Strong hands behind the plate, average footwork, and improved arm strength that resulted in a 76 mph positional velocity with pop times of 2.02-2.26.  Ran a 7.67 in the 60.

Zach Schoenborn C / RHP / Parkway , LA / 2023

Tall, physical 6’1” 195 lbs. frame. Schoenborn was one of the standouts at the catching position at the Louisiana All-State Games.  The 2023 LHH hits from a tall, open stance using a simple load and stride, getting his barrell in the zone early and staying through the zone a long time with great extension.  Consistently squared up balls in his BP round, showing present pull-side power that resulted in a 94 mph exit velocity.  Above average receiver that showed quality footwork behind the plate and accurate throws to second base that produced pop times of 1.92-2.05 and a positional velocity of 75 mph.  Ran a 7.36 in the 60.

Caleb Webb C / 3B / Walker, LA / 2022

Physical and sturdy 5’10” 185 lbs. frame. The C from Walker HS is another riser in the 2022 class.  RHH hits from an athletic stance with rhythm in his hands, using an almost knee to knee load to get into his hitting position.  Used his lower half extremely well during BP showing present pull side power, as he consistently made hard contact throughout the round that resulted in a 95 mph exit velocity.  Excellent receiver with strong hands, developing footwork, and improved arm strength that produced accurate throws to second base with a positional velocity of 75 mph and 1.90-2.02 pop times.  Also threw 84 mph across the infield and posted a 7.42 in the 60.

Barham White C / SS / Ouachita Christian , LA / 2022

Athletic 6’1” 185 lbs. frame with room to add strength.  The RHH hits from a balanced, open stance, bringing his hands from high to shoulder height.  Uses a leg kick to get into the hitting position.  Really focused on using the middle of the field during his BP round showing a slightly uphill bat path that produced an 85 mph exit velocity.  Average footwork and exchanges behind the plate with an over the top arm action that produced pop times of 2.06-2.21 and a positional velocity of 73 mph.  Ran a 7.33 in the 60.

Cooper Winchester C / OF / St. Pauls, LA / 2024

 Developing athlete with a 5’11” 165 lbs. frame. The switch hitting 2024 catcher hits from a slightly wide stance with rhythm in his hands, using a simple load and stride from the left side.  Aggressively attacked the baseball during his BP round, showing a direct bat path and good extension back through the middle of the field that resulted in an 82 mph exit velocity.  Stands tall from the right side with his hands held high.  Showed a slightly steep bat path from the right side with good extension.  Average footwork and exchanges behind the plate produced pop times of 2.05-2.23 and a positional velocity of 70 mph.  Threw 81 mph from the OF and posted a 7.41 in the 60
