All-State Games: Pitcher Analysis

The PBR Louisiana All-State Games took place in November at LSU-Eunice. The invite-only event featured some of the top 2021-2024 prospects in the state. Today, we conclude our position-by-position analysis by taking a look at the talented group of pitchers. The event was cut short due to rain so we did not get to finish all of the pitching.

Ryan Baron LHP / OF / St. Louis Catholic, LA / 2022

 Still developing 6’2”, 160 lbs. frame with room to add strength.  The RHH starts in a tall, slightly open stance, using a simple stride to get into the hitting position.  Uphill bat path, gets a little long at times, good extension through baseball that produced a max exit velocity of 91 mph.  On the mound, Baron hides the ball well from hitters, releases from a high ¾ arm slot.  FB showed arm side run topping out at 84 mph, sitting 82-83 mph.  CH that sat 73-76 mph was his best secondary pitch as he showed the ability to keep the same arm speed as his FB.  Flashed a developing CB at 64-65 mph.  Ran a 6.9 in the 60 and threw 85 mph from the OF. 

William Boneno RHP / SS / Catholic(BR), LA / 2022

 Physical and still developing 6’1” 172 lbs. frame. Above average athlete that posted a 7.26 in the 60.  Hits from a tall, athletic stance with good rhythm in his hands as he loads and strides.  Uses a modified leg kick.  Repeated his swing well during the BP portion, showing balance throughout the swing and a flat bat path.  Max exit velocity of 84 mph.  Average footwork, clean exchanges, releasing the ball from a ¾ arm slot that resulted in an 83 mph positional velocity during the defensive portion of the day.  On the mound, worked quick and pounded the zone.  Showed an above average FB that sat 84-87 mph, topping out at 88 mph.  FB played up during the game.  Good spin on his 11-5 shaped CB that 74-75 mph.  Also, showed a developing 70-72 mph CH.

Trent Caime RHP / 3B / St. Paul's , LA / 2022

Physical 6'1" 190 lbs. frame with strength in the lower half.  Worked exclusively from the stretch, starting on the left side of the rubber.  Compact, short arm circle releasing the ball from a 3/4 arm slot.  Showed use of lower half, driving down the mound.  FB sat 84-85 mph, topping out at 86 mph with some late arm side run at times.  "11-5" shaped CB at 72-74 mph that was tight in shape and used as a "get me over" pitch.  CH looked like the best secondary pitch.  Kept same arm speed.  CH sat 75-76 mph.  

 

 

Trevor Cole RHP / 1B / DeRidder, LA / 2021

Tall, lean, and projectable 6’3” 175 lbs. frame with plenty of room to add strength.  Starts in the middle of the rubber and stays there throughout his delivery.  Long, loose arm action, releasing the ball from a ¾ arm slot.  Front side bails out at times, which created arm side run on his 74-76 mph FB, topping out at 77 mph with average spin at almost 2100 RPM.  65-71 mph CUT FB was an interesting pitch that played more like a slider, with some late downward action.  CB was “2-8” in shape with average spin and some biting action down in the zone. 

Kyle Comeaux LHP / OF / Southside High, LA / 2022

Athletic, 5’7” 140 lbs. frame with some twitchiness to his actions.  LHP starts in the middle of the rubber from the windup and works to the right side of the rubber before delivering the pitch.  Short arm action releasing the ball from a high ¾ arm slot.  Drives of the mound well with his lower half.  Creates downward tilt and some late arm side run when he gets his fingertips on top and behind the baseball.  FB sat 78-80 mph, topping out at 81 mph.  Average induced vertical break of 20.3” on the FB.  “2-8” shaped CB that sat 68-70 mph and was used as a “get me over pitch”.  Strike thrower who repeats his delivery well.  

Dawson Curtin LHP / 1B / Live Oak, LA / 2022

Physical and compact frame at 6’0” 188 lbs. with some room to add strength.  Short and quick arm action, releasing the ball from a ¾ arm slot.  Polished delivery, gets down the hill aggressively.  Attacked hitters all day with his FB that sat 85-86 mph, topping out at 87 mph.  Tons of swing and misses on the FB that got as high as 2288 RMP.  SL had good downward action sitting 75-77 mph.  Developing CH that was not thrown in game.  

Sam Eppinette C / RHP / Fontainebleau , LA / 2023

Physical 6'1" 190 lbs. frame with strength in the lower half.  Profiles as a future reliever.  Short, quick arm action.  Attacked hitters with the FB that had some late life running through the zone, sitting 80-81 mph, topping out at 82 mph.  Flashed an almost "11-5" shaped CB with average depth and spin, sitting 71-72 mph.  

 

 

Gavin Guidry SS / RHP / Barbe, LA / 2022

Projectable, long, lean, and athletic 6’2” 165 lbs. frame that will continue to fill out.  Advanced athlete that posted a 6.75 in the 60.  Hits from a tall, athletic set-up, gliding out with the front foot to get in an athletic hitting position.  Impressive BP round where he showed present gap to gap power.  Direct bat path with excellent extension through the baseball resulted in a max exit velocity of 93 mph.  Advanced infielder with athletic footwork, quick and clean exchanges, releasing the ball from a high ¾ arm slot that produced a positional velocity of 92 mph.  Projects well on the mound as well with a clean, repeatable delivery, releasing the baseball from a high ¾ arm slot.  FB sat 88-91 mph, topping out at 92 mph, with late, riding life through the zone.  Average spin rate on FB was 2234 RMP.  CB was best secondary pitch, showing the ability to land it for strikes and put hitters away with 2 strikes.  Near “12-6” in shape, the CB sat 75-76 mph.  Advanced feel for his 81-82 mph straight CH with the same arm action as his FB.

Jimmie Johnson RHP / 3B / Central, LA / 2022

Wiry and athletic 6’1” 170 lbs. frame that should add some strength as he continues to mature.  Full arm stroke with a quick arm action and quickness throughout his delivery, releasing the ball from a ¾ arm slot.  FB sat 86-87 mph, topping out at 88 mph, averaging 1944 RPM.  Late, sinking action on the FB.  SL was his best pitch, sitting 76-78 mph, showing aptitude for spin.  Delivered the SL with intent and was able to change the shape of the pitch by landing it for strikes early in the count and burying it down in the zone to put hitter’s away with two strikes.  Works quick on the mound, pounds the zone, and competes at a high level. 

Jackson Legg 1B / LHP / Calvary Baptist, LA / 2023

Jackson Legg:  Physical, 6’3” 190 lbs. frame with some rood to add strength.  Quick delivery with a fast tempo.  Starts in the middle of the rubber and works to the right side before delivering the pitch.  Long arm action releasing the ball from a high ¾ arm slot.  FB had some running action when fingertips stayed on top and behind.  Max FB velocity of 79 mph, sitting 75-78 mph.  CB was true “12-6” in shape and was used as his out pitch.  Started it at the top of the hitter’s knees, breaking down into the dirt.  CB sat 67-68 mph.  CH is still a developing pitch that looks to be used as his off speed pitch to land early in the count.

Brandon Levy RHP / SS / Parkway, LA / 2023

 Athletic and compact, 5’11” 170 lbs. frame. Good, overall athlete that posted a 6.93 in the 60.  Hits from a slightly open, tall, athletic stance, using a toe-tap load to get his swing off.  Present gap to gap power with a flat bat path working up through the plane of the pitch resulted in a max exit velocity of 92 mph.  Athletic actions in the infield, clean exchanges, releasing the ball from a high ¾ arm slot resulted in a positional velocity of 90 mph.  Also, threw 92 mph from the OF.  On the mound, showed a repeatable delivery releasing the ball from a high ¾ arm slot.  Pounded the zone with every pitch during the game portion.  FB showed late cutting action as it entered the hitting zone, sitting 85-86 mph, topping out at 87 mph.  Big, looping, near “12-6” action on his 67-71 mph breaking ball that he consistently landed for strikes early in counts to get ahead of hitters.  

John Pearson 3B / RHP / West Monroe, LA / 2024

Super physical 6’0” 210 lbs. frame.   The RHH starts from an athletic, balanced stance.  Simple load by picking his front foot up and putting straight back down in the same place.  Strong lower half that uses throughout the swing.  Showed present pull side power.  Consistently squared up baseballs during his BP round producing an event best 100 mph exit velocity.  Showed the ability to play multiple positions.  Good reads and jumps in the OF, releasing the ball from a ¾ arm slot that produced a positional velocity of 88 mph.  Soft hands, average footwork, quick ¾ in the IF resulted in a positional velocity of 85 mph.  On the mound, Pearson is a bulldog, competitor, and strike thrower.  FB sat 83-85 mph, topping out at 86 mph.  Was able to keep the same arm speed on his 74-77 mph straight CH, that he was able to consistently land for strikes.  Also flashed a 70-72 mph CB.  Ran a 7.33 in the 60. 

Logan Pierre OF / RHP / Saint Thomas Aquinas, LA / 2022

Athletic, 5’9” 165 lbs. frame with room to add strength.  Begins in the middle of the rubber working to the left side through his delivery.  Short, quick arm action, releasing the ball from a ¾ arm slot near his ear.  Showed two different types of FB sitting 73-74 mph, topping at 75 mph.  4 Seam FB stayed straight and true as it rode through the hitting zone.  2 Seam FB showed good, running action down in the zone away from LHH and in to RHH.  67-69 mph near “12-6” CB was used as an out pitch with two strikes with some late biting action down in the zone.  CH sat 69-70 mph, kept same arm speed, and the pitch stayed straight and true.

Chance Reed 2B / RHP / Walker, LA / 2022

Athletic, 5’10” 160 lbs. frame with plenty of room to add strength.  Posted a 7.25 in the 60.  Hits from a slightly wide, balanced set-up using a simple load and stride to get back to center.  Hands are held above shoulder height, working back as he gets into the hitting position.  Direct bat path with good extension that resulted in a max exit velocity of 82 mph.  Defensively, showed a quick first step, average hands, athletic footwork, releasing the ball from a low ¾ arm slot that resulted in a 74 mph positional velocity.  On the mound, showed a short, quick arm action with a repeatable delivery.  Started on the left side of the rubber and stayed there throughout delivery, releasing the ball from an over the top arm slot.  FB sat 76-78 mph, topping out at 79 mph.  Average, “12-6” CB that sat 66-68 mph.  

William Riley RHP / 1B / Catholic (BR), LA / 2022

 Physical, athletic 6’2” 200 lbs. frame with some room to add strength.  Starts on the left side of the rubber and stays there throughout his delivery.  Short, quick arm action, releasing the ball from a ¾ arm slot.  Flashed a 4 seam and 2 seam FB that sat 81-84 mph, topping out at 85 mph.  4 seam FB stayed true riding through the zone with some late life.  2 seam FB had good downward tilt and sinking action in to RHH hitters and away from LHH.  Showed above average spin on both his CB and SL.  CB sat 70-72 mph.  Big, looping CB that was near “12-6” in shape that averaged 2556 RPM and maxed out at 2640 RMP.  SL had a sharper, tighter action and was used as a 2 strike pitch, sitting 75-76 mph.  Also showed a developing CH at 76-77 mph.

Jon Robert Tollett RHP / 3B / Ruston, LA / 2023

Tall, lean 6’2” 170 lbs. frame that will continue to add strength as he matures.  Begins on the right side of the rubber and stays on the right side of the rubber.  Creates crossfire action to RHH.  Profiles as a sinker/slider guy.  Long arm action, releasing the ball from a low ¾” arm slot with some effort.  Stayed on top of his FB, creating good sinking action down in the zone away from LHH and in to RHH.  81-82 mph, topping out at 83 mph on the FB with an average horizontal break of 15”.  Used his 71-72 mph CB as a “get me over” pitch that he was able to land for strikes consistently early in counts that was “2-8” in shape.  75-76 mph SL was used as his out pitch with two strikes that had average spin and good bite down in the zone.

Harrison Waghalter LHP / OF / Catholic (BR), LA / 2023

Tall, lean, projectable 6'0" 139 lbs. frame with plenty of room to add strength.  Begins on the left side of the rubber and stays there throughout his delivery.  Long, loose arm action with some effort, releasing the ball from a 3/4 arm slot, staying on line throughout the delivery.  FB sat 79-80 mph, topping out at 81 mph, with late arm side run.  CH looked to be best secondary pitch with the same late arm side run as the FB.  "1-7" shaped CB with good depth and average spin that sat 64-66 mph.  

 

 

Drake Weller RHP / 3B / Live Oak, LA / 2022

Physical 6’0” 160 lbs. frame that has room to add strength.  Hits from a tall, balanced stance, using a simple load and stride to get back to center.  Came out of his back leg at times during his BP round.  Slightly uphill bat path through the baseball that resulted in a max exit velocity of 87 mph.  Defensively, showed average footwork, soft hands, with a short and quick arm action, releasing the ball from a high ¾ arm slot.  Posted an 85 mph positional velocity.  On the mound, primarily got ahead of hitters by pounding the zone with his 81-82 mph FB, topping out at 83 mph.  Above average spin rate on the FB at 2100 RPM.  “10-4” shaped CB that he landed for strikes at 71-72 mph.  Flashed an above average CH as well at 73-76 mph.
