Central(BR) Defeats Parkway; Zachary Holds Off Terrebonne

BATON ROUGE  ̶  On Monday, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana was in attendance for two class 5A first round playoff match-ups.

In the first contest, 2017 RHP Ma’Khail Hilliard (Central(BR)) took the hill for the Wildcats, and was sharp in the Wildcats 5-1 victory over Parkway. Currently ranked No. 8 in Louisiana’s 2017 class, No. 227 Overall, Hilliard sat 87-90 mph with his fastball through four innings of play. Finishing the contest holding his velocity well at 86-87 mph through seven innings. In addition, Hilliard showed his sharp, tight spinning breaking ball with 11/5 shape at 78-81 mph. Hilliard went the distance for the Wildcats, allowing two hits, one run, and struck out five.

The big offensive blow for Central(BR) in their first-round victory came from 2018 OF Brant Husser, as he lead off the bottom of the third inning with a home run to deep right field, giving the Wildcats a 3-0 advantage.

Central(BR) would push across five runs on three hits in their 5-1 victory.

For the nightcap, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana jumped in the car and headed across town to catch the class 5A first-round match-up between Zachary and Terrebonne.

The nightcap turned into another pitcher’s duel that saw the two teams combine for three hits, with Zachary eventually pulling out the victory 1-0.

RHP Nathan Keller (Zachary) went 6.1 innings for the Broncos, allowing only two hits, and struck out six. Northwestern State recruit, 2017 RHP Robert Burke (Zachary) would close the game out, facing only one batter, as he enduced a game-ending double play.

Nicholls State recruit, 2018 UTL Mason Turner (Terrebonne) got the start on the mound for Terrebonne and was strong in his complete game outing. Turner sat 83-85 mph, touching 86 mph with his fastball and surrendered only one hit and the lone run in the contest. In addition to his strong outing on the mound, Turner would collect both hits for Terrebonne on the night, finishing the night 2-for-3.

2018 IF Rhett Hebert (Zachary) would lead off the bottom of the fifth inning with a hard double down the left-field line. Then with one-out, Hebert would tag on a fly ball to centerfield, advancing to third base with two outs. Grant Quinn (Zachary) would then be hit by a pitch, giving the Broncos first and third with two outs. Clean-up hitter, 2019 Alex Milazzo (Zachary) would fall behind in the count, and the Broncos then put runners in motion, which resulted in Hebert crossing the plate before the third out of inning was recorded during the run-down between first and second base.
