METAIRIE – The Prep Baseball Report Louisiana staff was on hand last night, along with a half dozen college coaches, to see the high-powered John Curtis Patriot offense take on Evangel Christian in Division-1 Quarterfinal action.

A 13-day layoff did not affect the John Curtis hitters, as they ambushed Evangel in the bottom of the 1st inning with seven runs. Lead-off hitter, 2018 SS Brandon Davis drew a walk, which was followed by another walk to 2018 IF Jordin LaBruzza. Tulane recruit, 2018 1B Cade Beloso then hit a line-drive off the right-field wall, and advanced to second base on the throw in. An error from Evangel would then plate two more runs. Southern recruit, 2017 OF/RHP Austin Haensel would then hit a 1-out, 2-run home run to straight away center, giving John Curtis a 5-0 advantage. 2019 IF Alex Michel would add to the monster first inning, blasting a 2-out, 2-run home run himself.

John Curtis would push across four more runs in the 2nd inning, as 2018 C Jay Curtis and Tulane recruit, 2018 OF Logan Stevens would both hit doubles in the inning, and come around to score.

2018 RHP Ian Landreneau would get the start on the mound for John Curtis, picking up the complete game victory. Landreneau sat 82-84 mph with his fastball, running it up to 86 mph early in the contest, and showed a breaking ball with 11/5 shape and solid depth at 68-72 mph. He struck out six batters in five innings of work, walking four, while surrendering five hits and two earned runs.

Evangel’s two runs would come in the top of the 3rd inning, as lead-off hitter OF Taylor Knowles would homer to right-center. OF Jason Bellew would follow Knowles with a mammoth, towering home run to left, cutting John Curtis’ lead to 11-2, at the time.

The Patriots would eventually take the game 12-2, in a 5-inning, run-rule shortened game. The two teams will face off again today, in the best-of-three series, to see who will advance to the semi-finals next week in Sulphur, LA.
