Louisiana Draft Recap

This past weekend was the annual Major League Baseball Draft. As is usually the case in Louisiana, not many high school players were selected high, as signability is tricky with college baseball being so popular in the South.

However, there were three Louisiana high school players selected on Day Three of the draft.

Northwestern State commit, RHP Tyree Thompson (Edna Karr HS) was the first to go from Louisiana (26th Round, Texas Rangers). A relatively unknown commodity, Thompson is an athletic, projectable right-hander that was a standout basketball player. He shows a long, loose arm action with a fastball that sits 81-84 mph touching 86 mph and feel to spin a breaking ball.

Louisiana State recruit, and the No. 1 player in Louisiana’s 2016 class, Jake Slaughter (Ouachita Christian HS), was selected in the 36th round by the Chicago Cubs. Slaughter will almost certainly head to LSU in the fall where he could make an immediate impact for the Tigers as a freshman.

Another Louisiana State recruit, and the No. 3 ranked player in Louisiana’s 2016, SS Josh Smith (Catholic (BR) HS), was the third and final Louisiana high school prospect selected. Taken in the 38th round by the Detroit Tigers, Smith is a very polished middle infielder that had an impressive track record of winning and producing. Look for Smith to battle for the starting shortstop position next fall at LSU.
