Louisiana Insider: Top Five Athletes In 2017 Class

With the summer circuit finally concluded, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana takes a deeper look at the class of 2017. Today, we will take a look at the top five athletes of the 2017 class.

Although the run tool is the most obvious element of athleticism, PBR Louisiana took a few other factors into consideration like size, strength, looseness, and explosiveness in making this list.

Top Five Overall Athletes

1. Jacob Pearson, OF, West Monroe HS(2017)
A 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder and Mississippi State recruit with a strong, athletic frame. Shows the rare power/speed combo with a physically developed frame that has run a sub-6.5 60 yard dash. He combines that plus run tool with short, compact, and extremely power swing that produced an astonishing 100 mph exit velocity.

2. Kirkland Banks, INF, Barbe HS(2017)
A 5-foot-10, 180-pound infielder with a compact, strong frame with obvious fast twitch ability. Advanced defender that shows quality actions, fluifity throughout with solid feet and feel in the infield and near college average arm strength. Right-handed hitter with short, simple swing, bat speed, and quality path.

3. Daniel Cabrera, OF, John Curtis HS(2017)
A 6-foot, 180-pound Louisiana State commit with an athletic, strong frame. Extremely smooth athlete that plays faster than his 6.8 60 yard dash time, evidence by his 3.9 home to 1st time. Left-handed hitter with advanced hit tool, bat speed, quality leverage in swing, and advanced hand-eye coordination. Hits to all fields with backspin, smooth runner with tracking instincts in the outfield. Shows looseness and a level of ease in the outfield, as well as at the dish.

4. Nick Ray, INF/OF, Jesuit HS(2017)
A 6-foot-2, 180-pound infielder and outfielder with a lanky, lean, and athletic frame with lots of room to get stronger. Quality runner with long strides and fast twitch actions.  Solid defender with instincts, good tracking speed, and a solid throwing arm. Right-handed hitter with a quality bat path, occasional juice, with long levers and he doesn't swing and miss often. 

5. Stephen Sepcich, OF, Jesuit HS(2017)
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound corner outfield and Tulane commit with a strong, developed, athletic frame. Extremely physical and imposing frame that has surprise fast twitch actions that will run a sub 7.0 60 yard dash. Shows quality arm strength throwing 86 mph from outfield with carry and accuracy on throws. Shows explosive bat speed, advanced strength a contact with solid hand-eye coordination.
