NHSI: Day 2 Notebook

Nathan Rode
National Supervisor

CARY, NC—There was no shortage of excitement on the second day of the National High School Invitational. Orange Lutheran HS, CA, punched its ticket to the semifinals with a walk-off error and John Curtis Christian HS, LA, took down perennial power American Heritage HS, FL, ending the game on a wild play. Orange Lutheran will play Calvary Christian Academy, FL, while John Curtis will match up with Green Hope HS, NC.

RHP Cole Winn (Orange Lutheran HS, CA) was all the rage Wednesday, but the focus has shifted to OF Jordyn Adams (Green Hope HS, NC), who opened some eyes the first two days and has helped Green Hope advance. Adams went 1-for-4 on Wednesday, but should have had two hits. He beat out a groundball in his first at-bat, turning in a 4.0 home-to-first time, but was called out. He later added a hustle double, reaching second base in less than eight seconds. He wasn’t cheated out of any hits Thursday, scorching three balls, one of which was a triple down the left-field line. He also stole four bases. A four-star football recruit, Adams is extremely athletic and does everything on the field with ease. He uses a big leg kick to load and drives the ball with a smooth, quick swing. He takes long, easy strides to chew up ground on the bases and in center field. After one of his singles, he scored without a ball being put in play. He stole second, then took off for third on the next pitch, which got by the catcher and allowed Adams to easily round the bag and score.
