The Louisiana high school baseball season kicked off on February 20 with regular season action beginning under LHSAA regulations. Leading up to opening day, we published our team previews ahead of the 2023 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, counting down through the official PBR Louisiana Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

Since Opening Day, our scouts have been out and about covering the 2023 season and will be publishing scout blogs and additional in-season content along the way, such as our Power 25 updates, Player of the Week awards, and more.

The Top 5

There was little change to the Top 5 this week, as Barbe remains at the #1 spot, after another 6-0 record on the week.  The Bucs defeated defeated 5 of their 6 opponents via the 10 run rule last week.  Sam Houston stays at the #2 spot, after starting district play last week with a 3-0 record.  The Broncos will host Barbe this Thursday in a mega-matchup of what should be two undefeated teams, who are sitting at #1 and #2 respectively. Catholic (BR) moves up one spot to #3, after beating a really good St. Charles team on Tuesday, followed by a three game sweep of Dunham.  West Monroe moves up a spot, after another perfect 5-0 week, against some really good teams (Ouachita Christian, Live Oak, St. Amant, Hahnville, and Dutchtown).  The Rebels have won 14 straight games, since losing the second game of the year to Benton.  Dutchtown has dropped out of the Top 5, as we welcome Sulphur back this week to round out our Top 5.  The Tors started district play last week as well with a sweep of Comeaux and a win vs. New Iberia.

Risers

+ Covington has been one of the surprise teams of 2023, as they currently own an 11-1 overall record this season and move up 7 spots to #6.  The Lions had a three game sweep of Archbishop Hannan last week with 2025 Gavin Panks and 2023 Mason Estrada both hitting home runs.

+ Natchitoches Central made a jump last week and they make another jump this week to #7.  The Chiefs beat Grace Christian in the mid-week, before sweeping Westlake in a three game series over the weekend.  2025 Brock Laird hit his 2nd homerun of the year against the Rams.

+ Haughton has been one of the hotter teams in the state recently, as the Buccaneers have reeled off 9 straight wins.  After beating Red River in a mid-week game last week, they swept a really talented Glenbrook team in a three game series over the weekend.

+ Ruston started the season 1-4 and have since won 10 straight games.  The Bearcats are now back in our Power 25 Rankings, after a 5-0 record last week, with wins over CE Byrd, Zachary, Mandeville, Shaw, and East Ascension.

+Pineville went a perfect 4-0 last week with wins over Neville, Grant, Iowa, and Oakdale.  2023 Amahri Jackson hit 3 homeruns on the week, bringing his season homerun total to 5.

+Kinder has reeled off 7 straight wins and 4-0 last week with wins over Sacred Heart, Catholic Pointe Coupee, Ouachita Christian, and Ascension Episcopal.  2023 Griffin Cooley, a LSU signee, went 9-14 (.643) last week with 3 2B, 2 3B, 6 R, and 7 RBI for the Yellow Jackets.
