To get prepared for the upcoming playoffs, we will take a look at each classification. Below you will find PBR Louisiana’s top five for each class, their current power ranking, and a prediction of a state runner up and state champion. Once the official brackets are released these predictions may be altered to match the brackets.

5A-PBR Ranking-(Power Ranking)
1. Sulphur HS-(1)
2. Catholic(BR) HS-(2)
3. Lafayette HS-(4)
4. Zachary HS-(3)
5. Sam Houston HS-(6)

As is usually the case in the state of Louisiana, the 5A race for the state championship is wide open and will be near impossible to predict. The second and third round matchups being best two out of three has allowed for some stability, but anything can still happen in the one game sets of the 1st round, semi-finals, and finals. It certainly makes for an exciting few weeks of baseball. With that said, No. 1 Sulphur HS and left-hander Kale Breaux will be an extremely tall task for anyone to beat when all the chips are on the table, but crazy things happen come playoff time. Here are the predictions-

State Runner Up- Sulphur HS
State Champion- Catholic(BR) HS

4A-PBR Ranking-(Power Ranking)
1. Franklinton HS-(1)
2. St. Thomas More HS-(6)
3. Teurlings Catholic HS-(3)
4. Tioga HS-(2)
5. St. Michael HS-(5)

The 4A classification has been an interesting one to follow all season. The defending state champions St. Thomas More HS struggled early after being nationally ranked by several national publications, but look to have righted the ship heading into the playoffs. They are extremely talented and have loads of depth in the lineup and on the hill. As St. Thomas More struggled early, Franklinton HS took the reigns as the classification’s top team. They have been steady all season and boast a potent lineup, making them a force to be dealt with heading into the knockout stages.

State Runner Up- Franklinton HS
State Champion- St. Thomas More HS

3A-PBR Ranking-(Power Ranking)
1. John Curtis HS-(1)
2. South Beauregard HS-(6)
3. Evangel HS-(2)
4. Brusly HS-(4)
5. E.D. White HS-(11)

The 3A classification race looks very similar to that of last year, with it appearing as though John Curtis HS will be in a dogfight with Evangel HS to bring home the trophy. This classification may come down to matchups though, and by that we mean whoever has the unfortunate privilege of matching up with right-hander Nick Lee. With a fastball that can touch the mid-90s, it will take a gutsy effort and good fortune for someone to take him down.

State Runner Up- South Beauregard HS
State Champion- John Curtis HS

2A-PBR Ranking-(Power Ranking)
1. Doyle HS-(1)
2. Kinder HS-(7)
3. Runnels HS-(2)
4. St. Thomas Aquinas HS-(3)
T-5. Northlake Christian HS-(5)
T-5. Riverside HS-(9)

The top of the 2A classification has been dominated by district 7-2A with the top three teams in the power rankings residing in that district. This could make for some interesting matchups if these district rivals see each other in the late stages of the playoffs. RHP/SS and the No. 4 ranked player in the ’15 class, Dylon Poncho, is trying to lead Kinder HS to back to back state championships.

State Runner Up- Riverside HS
State Champion- Kinder HS

1A-PBR Ranking-(Power Ranking)
1. Ouachita Christian HS-(1)
2. Sacred Heart HS-(2)
3. Hanson Memorial HS-(3)
4. Central Catholic HS-(6)
5. Cedar Creek HS-(4)

Ouachita Christian HS has seemingly been a wire to wire number one team in the 1A power rankings and has been a consistent top ten team in the PBR Power 25 rankings, so it should come as no surprise they are our favorite to take home the 1A crown. With perhaps the two best position players in the 2016 class in the same lineup, SS Jake Slaughter and INF Ryan Reynolds, their offensive can explode for a big inning at any time.

State Runner Up- Sacred Heart HS
State Champion- Ouachita Christian HS

Class B & C State Champion Predictions

Class B State Champion- Weston HS
Class C State Champion- Elizabeth HS
