The 2018 Louisiana high school season has come and gone in the blink of eye. As we now find ourselves in the final week of play, teams around the state are beginning to gear up for the postseason. Although the top five remains unchanged this week, there has still been shakeup in this week’s updated Power 25 team rankings.

+ A preseason top five team, Zachary HS ascended to the No. 1 ranking in the first update to the Power 25 rankings and haven’t relinquished the top spot since. The Broncos’ sit at 29-2 with two games remaining on the schedule, and have rolled through an extremely difficult schedule, dominating opponents, outscoring them 219-60 so far this year.

+ The defending Division-I champions, John Curtis HS, remains at No. 2 for the third consecutive week, as the Patriots are undefeated in district play, and sit at 23-4 (with two losses coming from out-of-state teams). Louisiana State recruits, 2018 1B Cade Beloso (John Curtis HS, LA) and 2018 RHP Will Ripoll (John Curtis HS, LA) have put up eye-popping numbers at the plate and on the mound for the Patriots in 2018. Beloso took the state by storm in his junior season, and is hitting .444 with an OPS of 1.563, collecting six doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 24 RBI, 27 runs scored, while only striking out six times in 98 plate appearances. Meanwhile, Ripoll is 7-0 on the season, with four saves, an ERA of 1.08, and has struck out 73 batters in 45.1 innings of work.

+ Sam Houston HS (27-5), University Lab HS (24-4), and Barbe HS (25-8) round out the top five in the latest update of the list. University Lab (3A) is the highest ranked team outside of class-5A, as three of the Cubs’ four losses have come against 5A teams. Sam Houston and Barbe are both battled tested heading into the playoffs, as the district 3-5A schedule is a gauntlet with four teams ranked in the top seven of the Power 25 (Acadiana HS (No. 6) & Sulphur HS (No. 7)).
