Southwest LA Preseason ID: Preview Story

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

On Saturday, January 15, 2022, the PBR Louisiana staff will head to McNeese State University, to host our Southwest Louisiana Preseason ID.  This open event allows our staff an opportunity to get a look at prospects, across all classes, and the gains that they have made during the offseason.  The Preseason ID Series serves as an opportunity to earn consideration for the 2022 Future Games, receive invites to to future invite-only events, and aids in getting on follow lists for the upcoming high school season.

ROSTER PREVIEW

We’re eager to get an up-to-date look at the players set to workout at McNeese on Sunday, including several brand new faces to our scouting staff. Combing through the current roster, here are a few quick nuggets on some names that stand out:

+ 2023 LHP/1B J.C. Vanek (Barbe HS):  We are excited, to say the least, to get a chance to see Vanek up close this coming Saturday.  The 6’3” 185 lbs. LSU commit has fully recovered from Tommy John Surgery back in 2020 and in a recent look, was up to 86 mph.  Vanek was also a first team All-State selection last spring, as a first baseman, and led Barbe in hitting.

+ 2022 RHP Seth Benoit (Jennings HS): 6’0” 165 lbs. wiry frame: Benoit attended two of events in 2021 (January and October), and with each look, he’s shown jumps in velocity and improved stuff.  We’ve been told that the velocity has taken another jump, so we’re excited to get to see the uncommitted RHP Saturday.

+ 2023 OF Jaydun Colbert (Southside HS):  Athletic 5’11” 175 lbs. frame; this will be our first up close look at the L/L OF from Southside HS.  Colbert is a stellar athlete on the diamond and the football field and is a guy who should run really well.  The swing is smooth and there’s some present gap to gap power from reports we’ve received.

+ 2023 OF Grant Ducote (Rosepine HS): Physical build at 5’10” 200 lbs.  Ducote was a key part of Rospeine’s run to the Class 2A State Title last spring.  Rosepine Head Coach Jeff Smith talks very highly of Ducote and believes he’s an “under the radar” prospect in the 2023 class.

+ 2024 C Brody Harlow (Sulphur HS): Athletic and lean 6’1” 165 lbs. frame with plenty of room to add strength.  The Sulphur Tor product had a good showing at our All-State Games in October of 2021.  Quality receiver, works to block every pitch.  He also collected a nice two strike hit during gameplay at the event as well.
