Top Unsigned Seniors Heading Into The Summer

As we enter the last week of the regular season in Louisiana, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana looks at a few seniors that remain on the open market as they head into the summer circuit. As smaller institutions around the country are ramping up their recruiting efforts, and the Major League Baseball amateur draft is around the corner, this is usually the beginning of a busy recruiting time for unsigned seniors. Here are a few players to watch down the stretch.

+ Sean Bretz, RHP, John Curtis HS
A 6-foot-6, 200-pound right-handed pitcher with a lanky, athletic, projectable frame. Long, loose arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and easy effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction and lands square. Fastball sat 85-89 mph with quality angle and tilt. Breaking ball shows 11/5 shape with occasional solid spin and depth at 66-72 mph. Also shows quality feel for a changeup with fastball arm speed, deception and fade action at 74-75 mph. Unsigned senior that is coming on strong towards the end of his senior year, projects well with solid athleticism. On the season Bretz has 20.1 innings pitched with a 4 and 0 record, 2.37 ERA, allowing 16 hits and 25 strikeouts to only 9 walks.

+ Matthew Muhleheisen, INF, Holy Cross HS
A 6-foot-1, 187-pound infielder with a strong athletic frame. Right-handed hitter with an athletic setup, smooth load, short stride, solid lower half, and quality balance. Gap to gap type hitter with fluid rhythm, slightly uphill path and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 86 mph. Quality defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange and plays through balls well. Long arm action into over the top release with accuracy on throws that produced a 78 mph positional velocity.

+ CJ Estave, C, Franklinton HS
A 5-foot-9, 195-pound catcher with compact, strong frame. Quality defender with soft hands, quick footwork, and a quick, clean exchange. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 79 mph and a pop time of 1.94 seconds. Right-handed hitter that hits from a balanced setup, smooth load, short stride, explosive lower half and solid balance. Gap to gap type hitter with fluid rhythm, slightly uphill path and explosive bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 88 mph. On the year Estave his hitting .483 with 8 2B, 2 HR, 21 RBI while only striking out 4 times.

+ Mason Mayfield, RHP, Jesuit HS
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher with a lanky, athletic frame. Long arm action with a slight wrap into high-3/4 release and regular effort. Fastball sits 81-84 mph touching 86 commands it to the outer half well. Also flashes a cutter, slider mix at 77 mph that has some deception and spin. On the season Mayfield has 48.1 innings pitched with a 1.01 ERA, striking out 47 while only walking 12.

+ Mike Romano, RHP, Mandeville HS
A 5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed pitcher with an average, athletic frame. Long, loose arm action with quick arm speed into high-3/4 release and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and finishes athletic. Fastball sits 82-85 mph touching 86 mph with late sink and command. Breaking ball shows 10/4 shape with sharp break and fastball arm speed at 72-73 mph. Also shows a changeup with near fastball arm speed and fade action at 73-74 mph. On the season Romano has 50.1 innings pitched, 1.80 ERA, allowed 47 hits and has struck out 49.

+ Will Allen, RHP, Thomas Jefferson HS
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed pitcher with an athletic, projectable frame. Loose arm action into ¾ release with a quick arm and some effort. Some rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands closed and finishes upright. Fastball sat 81-83 mph with late sink and command. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with gradual break and near fastball arm speed at 69-70 mph. Showed a change up with near fastball arm speed and fade action at 76-77 mph.
