Underclass Games: Quick Hits

The annual Underclass Games took place on Tuesday July 23rd at Tigue Moore Field on the campus of the University of Louisiana Lafayette. The invite only event saw 60+ of the best underclass prospects from across the state of Louisiana.

Today, Louisiana Scouting Directors Trey Sofio and Walt Jones run through a few quick hits and observations of prospects from Tuesday's invite only event.

Quick Hits

+ 2021 OF Ian Montz (Acadiana HS, LA) stood out at Tuesday’s Underclass Games. The long, rangy 6-foot-2 170-pounder started his day by posting a 6.69 60-yard dash, and followed with a quality defensive workout, showing athletic actions and arm strength with easy carry on throws, posting an 87 mph position velocity. The left-handed hitter also put together one of the best rounds of BP on the day, using a line-drive approach, and showing ability to hit to all fields with advanced bat speed producing an exit velocity of 83 mph.

+ 2021 SS Hayden Knotts (Parkway HS, LA) stood out at Tuesday’s Underclass Games. The athletic 6-foot-1 175-pounder posted a 7.01 60-yard dash before following with a strong defensive workout, showing smooth actions and arm strength with solid accuracy, posting an 85 mph position velocity. In batting practice, the right-handed hitter stood in with an athletic, balanced set up and created quality bat speed and strength producing a 91 mph exit velocity.  

+ 2021 C Anthony Priester (Live Oak HS, LA) showed well at Tuesday’s Underclass Games. The physical 6-foot-1 185-pounder posted a 7.09 60-yard dash then followed up with solid defensive workout, displaying good hip flexibility, soft hands and clean exchanges posting pop times ranging 2.00-2.13 and a positional velocity of 80 mph. The right-handed hitter hits from a tall, athletic, stance and uses a medium leg kick to create a loose, slightly uphill path with quality bat speed producing an exit velocity of 93 mph.  

+ 2021 OF Codi Williams (St. Michaels HS, LA) showed well at Tuesday’s Underclass Games. The athletic 5-foot-11 170-pounder posted a 6.68 60-yard dash and showed fluid, athletic actions during his defensive workout producing a solid positional velocity of 80 mph. The left-handed hitter also took an impressive BP hitting from a taller, balanced, stance and firing off a fast twitch, athletic swing with advanced bat speed producing an exit velocity of 92 mph.  

+ 2022 C Ethan Frey (Rosepine HS, LA) showed well at Tuesday’s Underclass Games. The long, strong 6-foot-3 190-pounder posted a 7.04 60-yard dash and showed solid catch and throw skills during his defensive workout producing consistent pop times of 2.15-2.19 and a positional velocity of 77 mph. The right-handed hitter hits from a balanced setup and took an advanced BP, producing an exit velocity of 92 mph. 

+ 2021 SS Brennan Holt (Parkview Baptist HS, LA) was already one of the top middle infield prospects in the state coming into Tuesday, and the 5-foot-9, 155-pounder only elevated his stock at the Underclass Games. Holt started his day by turning in an event best 6.50 60-yard dash, showing off explosive athleticism. Defensively, he showed off solid actions with soft hands, active feet, and arm strength with carry on throws across the diamond, posting an 88 mph positional velocity. A left-handed hitter, Holt put together one of the best round of BP on the day, showing feel to hit to all fields. Hits from simple, athletic setup with fluid rhythm, and compact, direct path to the baseball that consistently found the barrel.

+ 2022 C/OF Ashton Fuselier (Sam Houston HS, LA) is one of the top rising sophomores in the state already, and the 5-foot-11, 155-pounder raised eyebrows on Tuesday by flashing elite level catch and throw skills behind the dish. Posting an event best 1.93-seconds pop-time, he showed fluid, athletic hips, soft hands, quick, fluid footwork, and clean, quick transfers with arm strength, carry, and accuracy on throws down to 2nd base.

+ 2021 OF Ethan Medlin (Barbe HS, LA) showed explosive athleticism on Tuesday, as the 5-foot-11, 155-pound outfielder turned in a blazing 6.51 60-yard dash. An athletic defender, Medlin showed off quality arm strength from the outfield as well with carry and accuracy on throws, posting a positional velocity of 88 mph.

+ 2022 C Carson Carey (Airline HS, LA) is another highly advanced rising sophomore catching prospect that stood out on Tuesday. An athletic 6-foot-1, 180-pound catcher with lean build, Carey showed advanced receiving ability with fluid footwork, clean transfers, and plus arm strength with carry on throws, posting a positional velocity of 80 mph.

+ 2021 IF/RHP Hunter Ponson (Parkview Baptist HS, LA) put together one of the best rounds of BP on the day, as the left-handed hitter showed fluid, athletic rhythm with a flat, on plane path and bat speed. Likely a corner infielder as he advances, the physical 6-foot-2, 174-pounder showed active feet with solid actions, soft hands, and arm strength with carry on throws across, posting a positional velocity of 88 mph.
