Updated Class Of 2020 Rankings

Trey Sofio
Louisiana Scouting Director

It’s been a busy four-plus months since the last update to the Class of 2020 rankings. As we have worked our way through the spring and summer, both on the state and national levels, more light has been shed on this talented and deep class. There has been plenty of shakeup throughout the list, which has now been expanded to 155 players. Here are some highlights in the update...

+ SS Blake Shapen (Evangel Christian Academy) and Louisiana State recruit, OF/LHP Brody Drost (Barbe HS, LA) remain atop the updated class of 2020 rankings. An athletic 6-foot-1 middle infielder, Shapen has separated himself by showing potential premium defend ability with soft hands, actions, and arm strength across. Offensively, the right-handed hitter shows advanced strength with a simple, direct path, generating quality bat speed. A legitimate two-way prospect going forward, Drost has already shown potential of a premium hit tool with present power from the left side, which was on full display in Barbe HS’s run to the state title.

Blake Shapen SS / 3B / Evangel Christian Academy, LA / 2020

Scouting report on Shapen from May's Playoff Series: Athletic 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame with strength in wrists, and developed, powerful build. One of the premier right-handed hitting infield prospects in the country; only solidified his status with an all-around stellar performance. Finished the double-header 4-for-7 with three RBI, two runs scored, and blasted a loud home run to left field in game one. Hits from an athletic, slightly open setup with hands held above the shoulder; quiet and simple approach to the ball, leg lift stride, lands softly, fluid load, gets off backside well, maintains balance throughout; generates easy bat speed, stays strong thru the ball, high finish. Athletic defender, quick first step, feet and hands work together, quality actions, soft hands, quick and clean transfers; takes good angles, plays through the ball, stays under control, smooth and instinctive, plays with presence. Short arm action into high-3/4 release; quick release, plus arm strength, easy carry, follows throws, accurate. Average runner, better underway, instinctive on the bases; athleticism is evident, can stick at SS, but profiles to 3rd as he matures. Highly competitive, comes to play, confident, aggressive; has also been actively recruited in football as a quarterback.

+Louisiana State recruit, 1B/OF Tre’ Morgan (Brother Martin HS, LA) checks in at to No. 3 as the former Future Games standout continues to show he could be one of the premier left-handed hitters in the 2020 class. While Mississippi State recruit, SS Davis Meche (Barbe HS, LA) checks in an No. 4 in the updated rankings, as the left-handed hitting middle infielder has added size and strength recently. Showing advanced polish and feel for the game, Meche has proven to be a consistent winner.

+Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, LHP/1B Dylan Carmouche (University Lab HS, LA) rounds out the top five, as the 6-foot-5 left-hander was electric during June’s Top Propsect Games. An imposing figure on the mound, Carmouche dominated hitters throughout his outing, running his fastball up to 89 mph, while deploying a devastating breaking ball to put hitters away.

+ June’s Top Prospect Games saw several standout performances, as there have been several newcomers to the 2020 rankings. SS Joshwel Caminero (Bonnabel HS, LA) was one of those standouts, as the lanky, athletic 6-foot-2 middle infielder showed off a premium defend tool with arm strength across the diamond, posting a positional velocity of 89 mph.
