Weekend Notebook: 3/19/15 through 3/22/15

As district play around the state will kick off this week, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana spent the weekend attending some tournaments around the New Orleans area. The weekend saw some entertaining games between some of the best teams in the state.

Thursday saw Destrehan HS knock off Brother Martin HS, as Tulane commit and the No. 8 player in the 2016 class, Keagan Gillies, was making his second start of the season. The Wildcats got to Gillies early and never looked back. Gillies did not have his best stuff on the day, but battled and kept his team in the game.

Friday was one of the better days for pitching matchups in this area that PBR Louisiana can remember. The 4:00 PM start saw Hahnville HS matchup with Brother Martin HS. Austin Perrin, a 2017 left-hander, and No. 12 in the '17 class, got the ball for Hahnville HS. Blair Frederick, a 2016 left-hander with electric stuff, and No. 2 in the state, got the ball for Brother Martin HS. Both Perrin and Frederick went complete game, with Brother Martin ultimately getting the win. The nightcap saw uncommitted 2015 right-hander from Jesuit HS, Jack Burk, face off against 3A powerhouse John Curtis HS, and No.1 player in the 2017 class, Daniel Cabrera. Cabrera stole the show early when he blasted a triple into the left-center gap that gave John Curtis HS the lead. But in the end, the Blue Jays secured the victory as Cabrera showed good stuff on the mound, but pitched into some trouble in a limited outing, and Burk grinded through a pesky John Curtis HS lineup.

Prep Baseball Report Louisiana will be hosting its first event on May 25^th at St. Thomas Aquinas HS in Hammond, LA. The Underclass Trials is an open event for 2017 and 2018 graduates and will be an identifier for the Top Prospects games, which is an invite only event, as well as the PBR Future Games Powered by Under Armour. The Future Games is the premier national scouting event for underclassmen with over 100 college coaches in attendance last year.

+LHP, Blair Frederick, Brother Martin HS (2016)
A 6-foot, 180-pound left-hander with a thin, extremely athletic frame. Outstanding athlete with fast twitch actions. Above average arm speed out of a high-3/4 release and normal effort. Struggles to consistently repeat the delivery right now, but has managed to live in the strike zone early this season. Fastball sat 86-89 mph touching 90 with life at the end and deception created at release point. Showed a tight spinning slider at 76-78 mph that was commanded extremely well on the day. Exciting prospect that projects very well going forward. Louisiana State commit and No. 2 player in the 2016 class.

+RHP, Keagan Gillies, Brother Martin HS (2016)
A 6-foot-8, 200-pound right-hander with a large, thin frame. Clean, repeatable delivery with average arm speed out of a high-3/4 release. Fastball sat 81-84 mph with quality angle when down in the zone. Shows outstanding feel for a swing-and-miss breaking ball with 11/5 shape, tight spin, and plus depth. Tulane commit and No. 8 in the 2016 class.

+LHP, Austin Perrin, Hahnville HS (2017)
A 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore left-hander with small, athletic build. Clean, repeatable, athletic delivery with strong front-side into a high-3/4 release. Fastball sat 82-84 mph with occasional run and command. Flashed quality breaking ball with 1/7 shape and depth. Also flashes a solid changeup with fastball arm speed and late fade action. Pitchability lefty that competes in the zone with three pitches and projects well.

+SS, Brennan Breaud, Destrehan HS (2015)
A 5-foot-9, 160-pound middle infielder with thin, athletic frame. Fast twitch athlete that ran a 3.8 to first base on bunt for base hit. Solid defender that attacks the ball with soft hands, actions and arm strength across the diamond. Left-handed hitter with short, compact stroke, bat speed, gap to gap approach and makes consistent hard contact. Currently committed to Northwest Florida CC and ranked No. 37 in 2015 class.

+RHP, Myles Blount, Jesuit HS (2015)
A 6-foot-5, 200-pound uncommitted senior right-hander with a large, athletic frame. Fastball sat 85-86 mph with some looseness to the arm action. Also flashed a feel for a breaking ball with deception and depth.

+OF/LHP, Daniel Cabrera, John Curtis HS (2017)
A 5-foot-11, 170-pound sophomore and Louisiana State commit. Strong, athletic frame with advanced body control and smooth runner. Left-handed hitter with bat speed and strength at contact, scolded a ball to the oppo gap for a triple against a top-tier arm. Also a left-handed pitcher, sat 83-88 mph with a clean, quick arm. Flashed an above average changeup with arm speed, deception and late fade action.
