Prep Baseball Louisiana 2025 Game of the Week: #1 Catholic (BR) vs. #2 West Monroe
February 10, 2025
The 2025 Louisiana high school baseball season is officially underway, as regular season games across the state kick off today! The start of a new season brings a fresh slate—everyone’s record is 0-0, and the possibilities are endless. Here at Prep Baseball Louisiana, this is one of our favorite times of the year. Why? Because for the next few months, our sole focus is getting out to see live games, scouting players in real-time, and bringing you wall-to-wall coverage of the action. With no events on our calendar until the season wraps up, it’s all about game action from now until the final out in May.
We’re also fired up to bring back our High School Game of the Week, which has given us some incredible matchups in recent years. And for the second year in a row, Week 1’s pick was a no-brainer—there’s simply no way we’d miss a battle between the top two teams in our Power 25 Rankings.
With that being said, we’re excited to announce that our first Game of the Week for the 2025 season will feature #1 Catholic (BR) vs. #2 West Monroe! These two programs are defending state champions in their respective divisions, and both bring back a ton of talent from last year’s title teams. If you’re a fan of high-energy, high-stakes baseball, this is a matchup you can’t afford to miss. The storylines are endless, and the stakes couldn’t be higher for this early-season clash.

GAME OF THE WEEK PREVIEW
For the second year in a row, Louisiana high school baseball fans are about to witness something special—Catholic (BR) is making the trip north to face West Monroe in what promises to be an epic, early-season showdown between the #1 and #2 teams in our Power 25 Rankings. Star power? Check. College recruits? All over the field. Drama? Guaranteed. This three-game series is a heavyweight battle you don’t want to miss!
Both teams are coming off a state title and will be reloading in different ways, but make no mistake—these squads are loaded and ready to set the tone for the season.
Catholic (BR) – Offense for Days
The Bears lineup is absolutely stacked, with enough firepower to light up scoreboards all season long. Leading the way is senior LSU signee Jack Ruckert, who anchors a veteran group of returning stars. He’s joined by seniors Noah Lewis (UL-Lafayette signee), Davis Emonet (LSU-Eunice signee), Edward Henriquez (Alvin CC signee), and Andrew Clapinski (LSU-Eunice signee)—and that’s just a taste of what this offense can do. Senior Orlando Henriquez (Alvin CC signee), senior Chase Harris, and junior Harrison Kidder give the Bears a lineup that’s dangerous 1 through 9. Good luck finding a soft spot.
On the mound, Head Coach Brad Bass and Pitching Coach Tyler Naquin have options to replace their departed arms, highlighted by junior LHP Lucas Lawrence (Southern Miss commit), who’s poised to break out. Junior RHP Mills Richardson (Southeastern Louisiana commit) adds more depth, and senior RHP Jake Tompkins Jr. (Mississippi College signee) is the most experienced of the group, and is coming off a perfect 5-0 season, in which he allowed only one earned run the entire year. Expect the Bears to continue to pitch at a high-level.
West Monroe – Pitching Dominance
If Catholic (BR) has the bats, West Monroe has the arms to match—and maybe then some. The Rebels rotation is as good as it gets, led by senior RHP Drew Ferguson (Louisiana Tech signee) and junior LHP Bradyn Cupit (LSU commit). These two are as good as it gets in high school baseball.
Ferguson’s résumé speaks for itself—he’s helped bring home two state titles, racking up an incredible 28-4 record with a 1.61 ERA over 204 innings during his first three years at West Monroe. He’s been Mr. Reliable his entire career, and you can bet he’ll be ready to shine under the bright lights again.
Then there’s Cupit—the top left-handed arm in Louisiana’s 2026 class, with a fastball that touches the low 90s. He’s fresh off a 9-1 season with 89 strikeouts and was the winning pitcher in last year’s state title victory over Barbe.
Throw in senior RHP Garrett Frye (South Arkansas CC commit), a steady strike-thrower with a nasty three-pitch mix, and the Rebels have a rotation that could go toe-to-toe with anyone in the state.
The offense lost some key contributors from last year, but don’t sleep on these Rebels. Seniors Zach Simpson, Tyler Roark (Louisiana-Monroe signee), Drew Anderson, and Lytton Arledge all return from last year’s title team, bringing experience and leadership, as well as sophomore sensation Peyton Starr, who proved he could handle the big moments during last year’s playoff run.
An Early-Season Heavyweight Battle
Last year, Catholic (BR) swept this series in Week 1. Will history repeat itself? Or will West Monroe defend home turf and take control early in the season? One thing’s for sure—this series is going to be a dogfight.
Cancel your Valentine’s Day plans. Grab your friends. Pack the stands at 200 Riggs Street in West Monroe, LA from February 13–15. This is high school baseball at its absolute finest. Whether you’re a casual fan or a diehard, you’re about to see two of the best teams in Louisiana go head-to-head in what could be the most entertaining series of the entire season.
