Prep Baseball Louisiana 2025 Game of the Week: Barbe vs. Sam Houston (Week 7)
March 24, 2025
Last week, we headed to the New Orleans, LA area to see the John Curtis Christian Patriots take on the St. Augustine Purple Knights in Game 2 of their district 9-5A series. The Patriots took control early and never really let off the gas pedal, on route to besting St. Augustine by a score of 11-6.
This week, district play continues for everyone across the state, and we've got one of the best, if not the best district rivalry in the entire Bayou State. Our Week 7 Game of the Week features the Barbe Bucs taking on the Sam Houston Broncos in a District 3-5A heavyweight matchup. The Bucs and Broncos are once again having spectacular seasons with Barbe sitting at 20-4 and Sam Houston at 20-3. GAME OF THE WEEK PREVIEW
Our Week 7 Game of the Week just might be our best and most anticipated Game of the Week this spring with the Barbe Bucs taking on the Sam Houston Broncos. The Bucs currently own a 20-4 record, while the Broncos sit at 20-3 on the season. Both of these programs know each other extremely well, so Saturday will definitely be a "chess match" between Bucs Head Coach Glenn Cecchini and Broncos Head Coach Chad Hebert.
Barbe
The Non-Select Division I State Runner Up's a season ago; Barbe enters Week 7 with an 20-4 overall record. The Bucs started off the year with at 6-4 through the first two weeks of the season and have been on fire ever since, as they've won their last 14 consecutive games.
Senior C Presley Courville (Texas) missed the first couple of weeks of the season due to an injury, but is back healthy now and is a big reason why the Bucs have playing well as of late. The Texas recruit is the captain of the Bucs defense and he's been swinging the bat extremely well since his return. Fellow senior OF Cameron Stutes (Bossier Parish Community College) has enjoyed a breakout senior campaign and was named our National Player of the Week a couple of weeks ago. 3B Brit Vick (LSU-Eunice) and UTL Brecken Bordelon (Baton Rouge Community College) round out the Bucs four seniors who are in the everyday lineup.
The Bucs junior class is the most heavily represented throughout the entire lineup with former Future Gamers Myles Ledoux (Louisiana-Lafayette) and J.D. Alexander (Texas A&M) leading the way. Another former Future Gamer, junior Ja'Derryian Washington, is the team's everyday shortstop, while junior Haden Heath mans the first base position for Barbe. Rounding out the starting nine is sophomore spark-plug Jordin Griffin (LSU) in centerfield.
On the mound, Coach Cecchini has a pair of southpaws leading the way in senior Jairus Miller (McNeese State) and sophomore Lawton Littleton. Miller is currently having one of the best season's of any pitcher in the entire state and most recently announced his commitment to McNeese State, while Littleton is currently the top ranked left-handed pitcher in the state's 2027 class. Miller sports a mid-upper 80's FB from a lower-3/4 slot that tunnels well with his sweeping mid-70's SL. Littleton also owns a mid-upper 80's FB that he can located to all quadrants, while landing any of his secondary offerings for strikes or swing & miss. There's a good chance that we'll see one of these two guys toe the rubber next Saturday against the Broncos.
Sam Houston
As good as Barbe has been playing over the last couple of weeks, Sam Houston has been equally as good, as they've won their last nine straight games to improve their overall record to 20-3.
The Broncos offense has a good mix of veteran upperclassmen and younger first-year guys. Former Future Gamer senior C Connor Walker (McNeese State) is the backbone of the team's defense and is also a run-producer in the middle of the lineup. Senior SS Haden Peshoff (Bossier Parish Community College) is a "throwback", blue-collar type of player that anchors the infield defense and also hits in the cleanup spot. Senior OF/LHP Cole Flanagan (Louisiana-Lafayette) is another former Future Gamer, who has been a three-year starter for the Broncos, as is senior 1B Ashton Bultron (Belhaven). The biggest surprise this season has probably been senior OF Wyatt Harvey, who has been hitting at a high clip all spring for Sam Houston. Junior 2B Carson Christ is the team's leadoff hitter for a second straight year and junior OF Charlie Donaldson hits right behind him in the two-hole. Christ is a gap-to-gap type hitter who hits for a high average and can drive the ball for extra-bases, while Donaldson is a versatile offensive player who can do everything from hitting a double to laying down a bunt for a hit. Junior Coleton Donaldson has played an excellent third base this season for the Broncos and rounds out the list of everyday starters for Sam Houston.
Sam Houston Head Coach Chad Hebert was surely excited to bring Flanagan back to the mound, after he missed the entire spring pitching last year, as he was recovering from an injury. Coach Hebert has brought Flanagan back at a slow pace this season, gradually building him up each outing, and he's to the point now where he's pretty much a full go and he's been really good. The Louisiana-Lafayette recruit can locate his mid-upper 80's FB to both sides of the plate to go with a bigger "1-7" shaped CB that he can land for strikes, and his best pitch is likely his low-mid 70's CH that dives down in the zone. He'll likely garner one of the two starts against Barbe in their two-game district series and the other probably starter is sophomore RHP Owen Galley. The former Jr. Future Gamer is a pitchability right-hander with a smooth delivery and easy arm action. Galley can land four pitches for strikes to all quadrants in any count and has been stellar for the Broncos this spring.
The Barbe/Sam Houston two-game district series matchup is always one of the most intense and well-played games of the entire season and this year is shaping up to be no different. In fact, in each of the last five seasons (not counting 2020 due to COVID), the Bucs and Broncos have split their two district games, further proving how competitive these two teams are when they meet up. High school baseball fans will be in for a treat next Saturday morning, as this series will likely have playoff seeding implications, on top of bragging rights in Southwest Louisiana.
