Prep Baseball Louisiana 2025 Game of the Week: Sterlington vs. Haughton

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2025 Louisiana high school baseball season is officially underway, as regular season games across the state kick off today! The start of a new season brings a fresh slate—everyone’s record is 0-0, and the possibilities are endless. Here at Prep Baseball Louisiana, this is one of our favorite times of the year. Why? Because for the next few months, our sole focus is getting out to see live games, scouting players in real-time, and bringing you wall-to-wall coverage of the action. With no events on our calendar until the season wraps up, it’s all about game action from now until the final out in May.

We’re also fired up to bring back our High School Game of the Week, which has given us some incredible matchups in recent years. And for the second year in a row, Week 1’s pick was a no-brainer—there’s simply no way we’d miss a battle between the top two teams in our Power 25 Rankings.

Our staff will be traveling north for our Week 2 Game of the Week, which features Sterlington and Haughton.  The Panthers got off to a perfect 3-0 start in Week 1, while the Bucs currently own a 3-1 record to start the season.

Be sure to follow us across all of our social media platforms for updates, highlights, and coverage of what promises to be an epic Week 2 Game of the Week!

GAME OF THE WEEK PREVIEW

Our Week 2 Game of the Week features two of North Louisiana’s premier programs as Sterlington and Haughton square off in a three-game series beginning Thursday night at Haughton. The series continues Friday at 5 PM in Sterlington before wrapping up with Game 3 on Saturday at 1 PM back in Haughton.

Haughton

The Haughton Bucs opened the season with a win over Alexandria Senior High before splitting a pair with rival Ruston. They started Week 2 strong, securing an 8-1 victory over Minden on Monday night.

Leading the charge offensively is senior OF Christian Turner, an Arkansas recruit and one of the top high school prospects in Louisiana for the 2025 MLB Draft. Through four games, Turner is hitting .357 (5-for-14) with a HR, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 5 R, and 2 SB. His smooth left-handed swing and game-changing speed make him one of the most dynamic players in the state.

Senior 1B JP Cormier is a physical 6'1" 220 lbs. right-handed hitter who is also off to a solid start this spring. Cormier is hitting at a .333 clip with 3 R and 2 BB through the first four games of the season.

On the mound, junior LHP Ashton Neighbors has been stellar out of the bullpen for the Bucs. The uncommitted southpaw has tossed 3 1/3 scoreless IP with 2 K's, and earned a save against Ruston last Thursday.

Sophomore Seth Jorstad has impressed both on the mound and at the plate. He picked up a win against Ruston, tossing 6 1/3 IP, allowing 1 unearned run with 1 BB and 5 K's. Offensively, he’s scorching hot at the moment, hitting at a .500 clip with 4 R through four games.

Sterlington

Coming off a state runner-up finish last spring, Sterlington enters this series with high expectations and an undefeated 3-0 start to back it up.

Senior Brody Belanger, a Northwestern State commit, is currently leading the Panthers in hitting with a .556 avg and .692 OBP, to go along with 3 2B, 7 RBI, and 4 R.

Baylor commit Miller Sheets, a former Future Gamer, has been equally impressive, going 7-for-13 (.538) with 2 2B, 3B, 5 RBI, and 7 R. Sheets is also a reliable defender at shortstop with next-level leadership qualities.

Sophomore Devyn Downs, an LSU commit, has been a force both at the plate and on the mound. He’s hitting .500 with a 2B, 2 RBI, and 7 R. On the hill, he dominated West Ouachita last Thursday, throwing 5 shutout IP, allowing just 1 H with 5 K's. Downs owns a FB that will reach into the low-90's to go along with secondary stuff that has continued to improve each year.

This matchup has all the ingredients for an exciting series—a potential MLB Draft pick, elite college-bound talent, and future stars in the making. High school baseball fans in North Louisiana won’t want to miss the action when the Panthers and Buccaneers battle it out starting Thursday night!
