NORTH ANDOVER, Ma. - “The second time’s a charm.”

That is the feeling from Jake Elbeery after making a commitment to Richmond following a decommitment from Notre Dame during the summer.

“It all happens for a reason,” Elbeery expressed.

A coaching change at Notre Dame, the college Elbeery committed to while a high school freshman, restarted the recruiting process that ended up with a decision to attend the Atlantic 10 school in Virginia.

“I started talking with them around July after the coaching change at Notre Dame,” Elbeery noted. “They watched me at Northborough and they liked me a lot and offered. Coach (Nate) Mulberg (the recruiting coordinator) was very diligent and really paid attention to me.”

It came on the heels of the difficult decision to look elsewhere than Notre Dame.

“It was tough, but there were other options out there,” the 51st-rated 2021 in New England said. “When I called the new coach he told me they didn’t want any recruits from the old class other than pitchers. He didn’t want to recruit corner guys and wasn’t able to get off campus to see me. He said it was in my best interest to open it up.”

The 6-2 205-pound Austin Prep junior is happy where it all led.

“The first time they saw me they liked my hit tool,” Elbeery said of Richmond. “I’m a big lefty projected to hit for power and they think I can be an above average third baseman.

“They also said they like my positive energy. I’m always picking guys up. Another thing they liked was that I’m not just a power hitter, I can find the barrel on tough pitchers.”

The visit to the A-10 school took place on Sept. 7.

“The first thing I noticed was the coaches were great,” Elbeery related. “I got to spend most of my time with the head coach (Tracy Woodson).”
