Montgomery County
Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons
2024 Record: 15-6
The Barons enter 2025 with a new face at the helm along with many new faces on the offensive side of the ball. Some familiar faces are back for another season including Trent Lopez (Cornell), Will Adkinson (Babson), and Jayson Cohen, but past that it seems as if we'll be waiting to see what names burst onto the scene. A name to potentially watch for is Alex Shure, who will likely be the leadoff hitter, and freshman George Cropp if he is able to see significant ABs. The 1-2 punch on the mound in Adkinson and Henry Eichner (UMass) is among the best across any public school in the state. Behind them, look at uncommitted senior Bryan Doukouris to have a breakout season as he provides much needed depth. The Barons will sport a new look offensively, but the return of top arms through the pitching staff will give BCC the talent needed to escape the most difficult region in the state of Maryland.
Blake Bengels
2024 Record: 9-7
2025 looks to be a brand new year for the Blake Bengals as they continue their rebuild after losing a slew of talent on both sides over the last two years. Their top three hitters have all graduated alongside their arm that saw the majority of innings in 2024. On the pitching side of things, expect senior Kevin Garcia and sophomore Issac Blinkoff to take a majority of the workload for this Bengals squad. As previously stated, the offense will have a brand new look and will look for either some underclassman to fill big voids, or rely on dome upperclassmen who have seen limited time at the varsity level. Garcia and Blinkoff are some under-the-radar arms that could give opposing offenses some issues, but the lack of offensive consistency may hold them back come early May.
Churchill Bulldogs
2024 Record: 10-8
Churchill has always had power bats throughout the lineup in previous years including Chris Hacopian and Luke Bookoff, but the identity of Coach Hunter’s squad in 2025 may very well flip to the pitching staff. The Bulldogs will be led by Owen Singer on the mound, who has had an exceptional summer and fall alongside underclassmen Ethan Blitz, who was one of the best freshman pitchers across MoCo last season. Look at John Kelly to be a contributing arm as well as he provides much needed depth as the #3 arm in the rotation. Offensively, they will be led by Joey King (St. Olaf), who has been one of the more under-the-radar contact guys across the county. Expect seniors Tanner Clark and Asher Dubin to produce in the front-half of the lineup, but our questions arise with the back-end of the lineup. Drew Bitterman is only a freshman, but could be a massive contributor on both sides if opportunities are given. The pitching staff of Churchill should keep them as a competitive squad with bats such as King leading the charge on offense.
Damascus Swarmin' Hornets
2024 Record: 10-9
The Swarmin’ Hornets enter 2025 with high hopes under first year head coach Pat Skellchock. A balanced team with impact players on both sides of the ball, Damascus has the unique ability to win games with small ball, pitching and an offensive explosion on any given day. On the bump, Coach Skellchock has the luxury of turning the ball over to numerous reliable options, starting with his two top arms in Mason Walter and William Heyse. Lefty Ian Hyman, along with the brothers in Giacomo and Raffaele Iorio add really nice depth to the back end to sure up the rotation. Offensively, this lineup has the ability to take this conference by storm, led by Cameron Wilberding at the top. Senior shortstop Jake Lokos is back and looks better than ever, and should solidify the middle of the order, as the Iorio brothers look to add to their impressive fall showing with an impact spring on both sides of the ball. Younger players vying for key AB’s will be intriguing to watch and should add plenty of depth throughout the order as well. On paper, this is one of the more balanced rosters across the conference and we believe all signs point to a deep run for Damascus.
Magruder Colonels
2024 Record: 20-5
The reigning 3A state champions definitely have some holes to fill following last year, especially on the pitching side of things. The offensive firepower is still there and should still be a top offense across the classification. They return a pair of senior outfielders in Terrion Pettus and Avery Grain (Wabash Valley JC) along with a long list of talented juniors in Jackson Branch, Colin McCullough, Matt Strahan, and Jovi Silva. This lineup should mash top-end pitching once again as they look for another 3A West II region title. The question is who steps up for Coach Creighton on the pitching staff? Hunter St. Denis and Xavier Headen have moved on, and some of these guys known more for their offensive capability will likely be asked to throw some innings, such as Strahan and McCullough. Some guys who may need to step up include Nilson Tejada and Drew Pfeufer. This Magruder team can be a scary bunch if the pitching can limit runs to a couple per game, as this offense is easily capable of putting up double-digit numbers.
Blair Blazers
2024 Record: 11-11
If all the pieces mesh well together, this could very much be a dark horse team across Montgomery County. On the pitching side of things, junior Desmond Llanes looks to take that next jump as he’s expected to be the ace in this Blazers rotation. Only time will tell regarding how they utilize junior Owen Houser, either as another strong starter or as a shutdown closer, and the addition of two-way standout Dylan Anderson should add well needed innings on the front-end. The offense should show sparks throughout the spring, led by Keagan Green, Oliver Monroe and Jacob Wright, with Anderson providing some thump and game-changing ability in the middle of the order. This lineup will need to produce quality AB’s consistently if Blair wants to make a deep run, and a slew of returning players on both sides that got better and better as the 2024 spring rolled on makes this roster an interesting follow.
Northwest Jaguars
2024 Record: 12-7
The Jaguars enter 2025 with some intrigue on both sides and have every opportunity to shock teams across the conference. Led by two-way standout Myles Dickerson, this Jaguar offense returns a slew of impact players from a year ago and on paper, showcases balance throughout. Look for another step to be taken by standout outfielders in Chase Foster and Dominic Mejia, with depth provided by experienced players throughout. The biggest question mark is the pitching depth behind Dickerson, as the Delaware State commit can match up against any offense in the conference, however the back-end production from this staff may hold them back.
Quince Orchard Cougars
2024 Record: 15-5
This Cougars roster should show flashes on both sides of the ball, with an offense that certainly has a plethora of returning depth throughout the lineup. Led by their lefty standout bat in Josh Tseronis, QO returns intriguing middle of the order bats in Shane Beebe, Jack Kodrin, Aidan Graham, and Andrew Rabberman to provide some sparks behind Tseronis. If the Cougars want to be successful this spring, Tseronis will have to break out once again, and look for Beebe to be that difference maker to provide some sneaky pop and loud AB’s consistently. On the bump, QO returns their two-headed monster in Jack Kodrin and Justin Wu, two arms that play extremely well off each other and should give opposing lineups fits throughout the spring. The departures of last year’s arms bring question marks to the depth of this rotation and should open up available innings to younger talent.
Richard Montgomery Rockets
2024 Record: 14-6
As we turn the page to 2025, the Rockets keep grabbing our attention, as they return a slew of impact players on both sides of the ball. Alex Von Behren and Colin Vega are two arms to circle as we enter the spring, as both provided key innings for the Rockets in 2024 and look to build off of their success in 2025. At the dish, Von Behren, Jaylen Garcia and David Kinsinger hit over .400 for RM last spring and all signs point to another breakout offensive year this spring for all three. Depth is certainly a question mark on both sides, however, the top-end talent has the chance to lead the Rockets to success across this conference.
Sherwood Warriors
2024 Record: 18-3
One of the powerhouses among public schools in the state of Maryland, Sherwood after three straight 4A state titles moved down to Class 3A and ran into the top public school arm in the state and was eliminated in the region finals. The Warriors do return a slew of impactful arms even after the departure of one of the most successful pitchers in school history, Mac Crismond. The biggest aspect of this rotation is the balance they possess, with Jason (McDaniel) and Tyler Seils (Wooster), Bryce Sheahin (Shepherd), and Ty Hames (Francis Marion) as the standout RHPs with a pair of southpaws in Kyle Glasser (St. Mary’s) and Sam Rosenwald. The lineup is loaded as always, but will be without star outfielder Carter Sweeney-Strawberry (Rutgers) until the playoffs with a shoulder injury suffered last week. Even with that loss, the senior talent is absurd throughout this lineup with names such as Ryan Rey (Sacred Heart), Hames, and Jacob Bagania. The trio of junior bats will be the difference maker throughout the season with Jacob Bender, Calum Jagannathan, and Jake Berger providing the needed depth. Coach Davis’ squad is loaded once again, and without Henry Zatkowski to stand in their way, expect this team to soar back into the state tournament to take back their crown.
Walter Johnson Wildcats
2024 Record: 16-5
WJ loses some offensive firepower following last season with multiple graduations and one outgoing transfer. We expect this Wildcat offense to be senior-led, primarily by Brady Chan, Connor McGee (Endicott), and a couple two-way threats that will lead the rotation on the pitching side of things. Look for standout juniors in Grant Matalia and Ethan Pletter to make a jump and impact this lineup on the backend as well. The pitching staff will be strong once again led by a group of southpaws in Nolan Ross (Dickinson) and Spencer Gilcrest. Behind those two, a pair of senior RHPs will also be big time depth pieces in Shaun Rudick (Stevenson) and Andreas Johnson (Neumann). The biggest question for WJ is the depth in the back-end of the lineup, but if the right underclassmen step up, the Wildcats will be a dangerous squad to face in 4A West Region I once again come May.
Walt Whitman Vikings
2024 Record: 18-6
The Vikings enter 2025 revamped with talent as is the same year in and year out. A roster that is rich in talent on both sides, we see Whitman being the team to beat in this conference. Offensively, the transfer in from Florida State commit Charlie Buckles should add well needed power in the middle of the order, and the return of Sammy Berman, Sammy Angel, Cole Roman, Marcus Dober, and Dorian Smith should all add depth throughout the lineup. On the bump, it starts with a two-headed monster in Wells Twining and Berman, followed by talented two-ways in Sammy Angel, Puck Gardiner, Marcus Dober, and a slew of underclassmen talent to eat innings. The Vikings have made deep runs in the past few years, and if a state title has ever been closer in reach, this is the year it needs to happen.
Wootton Patriots
2024 Record: 7-12
Wootton should be a very intriguing team in 2025. The lineup provides some promise headlined by Jack Kerns, AJ Shifflett, and talented junior Kai Schmelzer that should all provide breakout seasons. The Patriots also return a slew of junior bats in Cyruz Kaz, Blake Graham, and others that should fill out the back-end of the lineup. Wootton possesses some arm talent and has a strong 1-2 punch in seniors Matthew Kunst (Marymount) and Luke Brunner, but those two will be heavily relied on to take on a majority of available innings. A key depth piece for them will be Hunter Sullivan who likely slots in as a major bullpen piece or the #3 starter. The top-end talent is there for Wootton to surprise many people, but those stars will need to consistently produce for that to happen.
