We continue our MD High School preseason outlook with an in-depth look at Prince George's County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City. Below, you will find notes on each, as well as players to watch for as we inch closer to the spring season.

Prince George's County

Last season was a strong one across the county as we saw some teams really jump onto the scene in-conference with some decent representation within the MIAA regional playoffs. Taking an in-depth look at the representation within each classification. Class 1A was highlighted by CMIT-North who powered their way to a 20-4 record behind a prolific career from Brice Johnson, who will go down as one of the top hitters the county has ever seen. The Tigers advanced through the region and steamrolled the opposition up until the state semifinals, where they fell to state runner-up Patterson Mill. Class 2A also saw a standout team in Frederick Douglass dominate the conference with a perfect 14-0 record behind explosive freshman Arrington Price III, grabbing the #1 seed in the region. However, they weren’t the ones to escape the region, as that honor belonged to Gwynn Park once again as they have continued to win this region year in and year out. The only representative in Class 3A from PG County is Oxon Hill whose high-powered offense propelled them to a 16-3 record before running into red hot Northern-Cal in the playoffs. Class 4A sees over ten teams from PG County represented, most notably highlighted by five teams reaching double-win figures in Bowie, Laurel, Roosevelt, Flowers, and Wise. Bowie led the pack with a 15-1 conference record, however Charles H. Flowers was the most successful team come playoff time as they escaped the all-PG county region with an exciting 12-10 win over Eleanor Roosevelt. This season will see some new faces take over for the smaller programs with key returners providing leadership to some younger rosters. Take a look at some players to watch across the county below.

Baltimore County

Baltimore County oftentimes is underlooked for many other conferences across the state, but they consistently produce a couple powerhouses that can come out and pull off a crazy upset. Baltimore County Division I always seems to be loaded every season and that was no different last season. Six of the seven teams in Division I walked away with double-digit seasons, and three of those teams find themselves battling it every season in 3A North Region I. The number one seed was once again the Towson Generals who held the best regular season record in the conference, led by seniors Jackson Huck and Aziz Bishop. However, they weren’t able to take home the region crown, as Catonsville pulled off a massive 7-2 upset in the region finals behind strong pitching from Thomas Bolster. The favorite this season will most likely be the Dulaney Lions, who fell early last season after running in Towson. The Lions had a very young team in 2024 and returned a vast number of talented players that should lead to sustained success. Moving down to Class 2A, the Hereford Bulls had a very talented senior-led team that turned into a double-digit win team and a state tournament appearance. Two other Baltimore County schools were crowned regional champions and made a QF game, those being Sparrows Point also in Class 2A, before falling in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Patuxent, and Perry Hall in Class 4A led by AJ Mendoza, who fell to Crofton in the QF. This county always seem to send teams to the state tournament, and we expect much of the same in 2025 as a couple of these squads bring back a wide variety of talent.

Baltimore City

The story of 2024 across Baltimore City schools was the success put on display by Baltimore Polytech. The Engineers have always put together strong seasons within the city but their talent was put on full display for all to see in 2024 as they played competitive games with some of the top teams in the state, including a one-run loss against MIAA’s John Carroll and a two-run loss against 3A powerhouse Severna Park. Entering the playoffs, Poly came in red hot and took down multiple Harford county schools to take the region, before upsetting one of the top teams in the CMC in the Linganore Lancers. They would make it all the way to the state semifinals, where they would fall to the eventual 4A state champions.

Poly wasn’t the only inner-city school to find some success as Patterson was another team that finished with double-digit wins before falling to Aberdeen in the region semifinals. In the other division, Edmondson-Westside was another competitive team in Class 1A as they once again took down their regional opponents, advancing to the state tournament before falling to CMIT-North. It’ll be interesting to keep eyes on Baltimore City to see if Poly can continue and build off their prolific 2024 campaign. For now, we look at some players to watch across the inner-city, primed for standout seasons.
