Fall Underclass Invitational: Catcher / First Base Analysis

The Fall Underclass Invitational took place on Sunday November 1. 40 of the top Underclassmen in the PBR Maryland area of coverage performed in front of the PBR staff and numerous colleges across the state and region.

Over the course of the next week we will be releasing the positional analysis articles with detailed scouting reports on each player in attendance. We shall also identify top performers in each positional category along with a younger talent (2018 and younger) as a Future Watch if applicable.

Today we take a look at the catchers and first basemen that participated in the event.

TOP PERFORMERS

Colin Adams C Caravel Academy (DE) 2017
Stout frame at 5-foot-11, 195-pounds. Ran a 7.9 60-yard dash. Hits from a balanced set up. Smooth load with short stride. Level path through the zone with bat speed. Gets extension through contact. Drives ball with gap-to-gap ability. Power potential. Gets lower half involved and has good balance and rhythm throughout swing. Exit velocity of 92 mph. Receives from nice set up. Quiet receiver and sticks ball well. Quick feet and exchange on throws to second. Short arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Catcher velocity of 82 mph and pop time as low as 1.94.

Garrett Matheny C Calvert Hall 2017
Athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 175-pounds. Ran a 6.99 60-yard dash. Hits from a balanced, slightly open set up. Quick leg kick in load. Level, uphill swing with some extension. Nice lower half and balance throughout. Exit velocity of 87 mph. Sticks ball well behind the plate with athletic set up. Higher set up when throwing down to second. Quick feet and exchange on throws. Short arm action from ¾ arm angle. Catcher velocity of 74 mph and pop time as low as 1.97.

Jared Hancock C Pocomoke 2018
Athletic, lean frame with room to fill out at 5-foot-11, 160-pounds. Ran a 7.41 60-yard dash. Smooth rhythm in load with slight knee turn and short stride. Short path to the ball with some bat speed. Nice rhythm throughout swing and balance. Gets lower half involved. Exit velocity of 85 mph. Sound actions from the corner with active feet. Funnels ball through exchange with short arm action. 82 mph infield velocity. Quiet receiver from balanced set up. Quick exchange and good feet throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Short arm action and throws got up to 74 mph. Pop time as low as 1.94.

FUTURE WATCH

Parker Landwehr C Calvert Hall 2019
Projectable athletic frame at 6-foot, 170-pounds. Ran a 7.22 60-yard dash. Hits from a tall, athletic set up. Smooth load with short stride. Short bat path and slightly uphill at times with some bat speed. Quick hands get barrel on ball. Gets lower half involved with some balance. Exit velocity of 83 mph. Clean actions at first base. Short arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. 74 mph infield velocity.  Receives from solid base with some hip sway. Quiet hands. Sound footwork behind the dish on throws to second. Clean exchange and short arm action from ¾ arm angle. Catcher velo of 70 mph with pop time as low as 2.07. Should continue to get better as he matures. Interesting prospect and one to follow in 2019 class.

Ryan Downes 1B St. Maria Goretti 2017
Imposing frame as 6-foot-1, 230-pounds. Ran a 7.8 60-yard dash. Hits from slightly open set up. Short load with longer swing path and quick bat speed. Pull side power. Potential to get more lower half. Exit velocity of 91 mph. Active feet and clean actions at first. Plays thru ball well and longer arm action throwing from a ¾ arm angle. Quick exchange and shorter arm action on turns to second. Throws across the diamond at 79 mph.

Jack McCann C Glasgow (DE) 2017
Compact frame at 5-foot-9, 165-pounds. Ran a 7.56 60-yard dash. Hits from a slightly open set up. Smooth load with short stride. Short path to the ball with quick hands. Stays inside ball. Nice rhythm throughout swing and some balance. Exit velocity of 86 mph. Sticks ball well behind the plate and quiet receiver. Quick feet and exchange on throws to second. Drops glove side on throws. Short arm action from almost over-the-top arm angle. Catcher velocity of 72 mph and pop time as low at 2.05.

Argiri Stakias 1B John Carroll 2017
Lean frame at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds. Ran a 7.7 60-yard dash.  Hits from a tall athletic set up. Quick load with short stride. Short path to the ball with some extension and average bat speed. Has balance and lower half usage. Exit velocity of 81 mph. Active feet and funnels ball to exchange. Short arm action throwing from a low ¾ arm angle. Throws across diamond at 72 mph.

Tripp Sullivan 1B/RHP Georgetown Prep 2018
Projectable athletic frame with room to fill out at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds. Ran 7.53 60-yard dash. Hits from athletic set up. Smooth load with short stride and lands slightly closed. Short path to the ball with some bat speed and gap-to-gap type hitter. Nice rhythm throughout. Exit velocity of 84 mph. Clean actions from first. Soft hands and clean exchange throwing from a ¾ arm angle. Short arm action. Quick feet on turns. Throws across diamond at 75 mph.

Michael Yuille 1B Northwest 2017
Projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 220-pounds. Ran a 7.7 60-yard dash. Hits from athletic, open stance. Short load and stride to square. Short path to ball that gets uphill at times. Pull side power potential. Gets lower half involved. Exit velocity of 84 mph. Moves well at first. Clean exchange and short arm action throwing from a ¾ arm angle. Throws across diamond at 74 mph.
