Freshman Free Showcase: Corner Infield Analysis

33 players from across the Old Line State, Pennsylvania, DC, and Virginia participated in this year's  Freshman Free Showcase at the Metrix Baseball Training Facility in New Windsor, MD. Players went through in a pro-style workout, took BP and threw bullpens in front of our PBR Maryland staff.

Today we release our evaluations of the six corner infielders from the event.

 

THE Corner Infielders

 

Michael Demske 1B / RHP / Winston Churchill, MD / 2023

Body: 6’2’’, 180 pounds. Athletic, strong, projectable frame.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, slightly open, crouched stance. Smooth back load, short stride and some hand separation. Stays behind the ball well and maintains balance throughout the swing. Longer uphill swing path. Gets good extension through contact and showed quick bat speed through the zone. Gap-to-gap approach.
Power: 75 mph exit velocity from the tee. Strength to the gaps, more power developing.
Arm: RH. INF - 73 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot.
Defense: Fields the ball out in front from a solid base. Slight glove tap in exchange.
Run: 4.59 home-to-first time.


John Earle LHP / 1B / Archbishop Spalding, MD / 2023

Body: 6’2’’, 240 pounds. Solid, physical body type.
Hit: LHH. Hits from an open stance with weight slightly shifted on the back side. Smooth, controlled backload with an average stride length. Short to the ball with a more level swing path. Stays behind the ball well with a one-handed finish. Generates some lower half involvement and flashed quick bat speed through the zone. Showed a really nice gap-to-gap approach. Squared up several balls to the gap during his rounds.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Present power to the pull side.
Arm: LH. INF - 75 mph. Throws with short arm action from a mid three-quarter slot.
Defense: Fields the ball out in front and keeps feet moving on double play feeds to second. 
Run: 5.02 home-to-first time.


Mitchell Hwang RHP / 3B / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

Body: 5’10’’, 165. Athletic
Hit: LHH. Balanced, open stance. Controlled leg kick load with slight pause and nice hand separation. Stays behind the ball well with strong lower half. Gets good extension through contact and showed loose hands and quick bat speed through the zone. Easy, fluid swing with a really nice middle of the field approach.
Power: 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Gap-to-gap pop. More power projected.
Arm: RH. INF - 75 mph. Throws with short arm action from a mid-high three-quarters slot.
Defense: Works through the ball in the infield. Plays with active feet and surrounds the ball fielding it closer into the body. Showed a clean transfer and keeps feet moving to target. Taps glove to collect prior to throw. 
Run: 4.69 home-to-first time.


Cameron Johnson LHP / 1B / Bishop McNamara , MD / 2023

Body: 6’2’’, 204 pounds. Long, athletic, strong, highly projectable frame.
Hit: LHH. Balanced, athletic, slightly open stance. Quick back load, short stride and nice hand separation. Short to the ball with an uphill swing path, quick hands and quick bat speed through the zone. Strong lower half, excellent extension and rotation. Hard two handed finish. Swings with intent to do damage. Hammered several balls working mostly pull side during BP.
Power: 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Plus power present to the pull side.
Arm: LH. INF - 82 mph. Throws with short arm action from a mid three-quarter slot. Throws showed carry.
Defense: Fields the ball out in front from an athletic base. Works through the ball and keeps feet moving towards second on double play feeds. Clean actions and exchange from glove to hand. Slight glove tap to collect before throw. 
Run: 4.70 home-to-first time.


Brandon Parks 1B / RHP / Archbishop Spalding , MD / 2023

Body: 6’0’’, 250 pounds. Big, solid body type. 
Hit: RHH. Balanced, slightly open stance. Controlled high leg kick load. Good hand separation. Short to the ball with a level swing path and fast bat speed. Gets out on front side attacking the baseball with intent. Uses some lower half and showed extension past contact. One-handed finish. Power type hitter with a nice middle of the field approach.
Power: 92 mph exit velocity from the tee. Strength and power present. Ball jumps off the bat.
Arm: RH. INF - 70 mph. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarter slot.
Defense: Fields the ball out in front from a solid base. Works through the ball on double play feeds carrying momentum to the second base.
Run: 4.79 home-to-first time.


Tyler Smith 3B / RHP / Archbishop Spalding , MD / 2023

Body: 5’9’’, 220 pounds. Big, solid body type.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, open stance. Smooth back load with a toe-tap and long stride. Short to the ball with a more level swing path. Creates quick bat speed through the zone with strong lower half involvement. Swings with intent, one-handed finish. Showed a nice middle of the field approach during BP. Power type hitter.
Power: 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. Power present, loud off the bat.
Arm: RH. INF - 80 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a mid to high three-quarters slot.
Defense: Active feet, gets around the ball and works through it. Fields the ball out in front from a solid base. Quick transfer, slight glove tap in gather. 
Run: 5.20 home-to-first time.
