Last Friday night (March 24th) saw a high octane matchup between two of the top MIAA "A" Conference teams, as Archbishop Spalding traveled to Calvert Hall to play under the lights. Not only did we get the luxury of seeing Senior East Carolina University commit Parker Thomas and Junior University of Maryland commit Jake Yeager toe the rubber for the Cavaliers, but I also got the chance to see an intriguing Sophomore righty in Peter Bashore come out of the 'pen for the Cardinals and slam the door on a potent Spalding lineup.

Archbishop Spalding didn't waste any time getting the scoring started on Friday night, as the McNally brothers struck early with a pair of RBI. Senior backstop Ethan McNally (James Madison) got it started with an RBI sac fly, followed by younger brother, Sophomore Jack McNally's RBI double to right-center field. Senior two-way Cody Sharman (Seton Hall) added an RBI single in the 2nd, and Junior infielder Brennan Inscoe added an RBI single in the 5th, leading to a 4-0 victory for the Cavaliers. Senior ace Parker Thomas (East Carolina) got the ball for the Cavaliers, and was just about as dominant as you can be, especially considering the wet conditions the night provided. Thomas worked five hitless innings and struck out eleven before handing the ball to Junior Jake Yeager (Maryland) who slammed the door, working the final two innings, giving up just one hit while striking out three. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez (Mount St. Mary's) came out of the 'pen for the Cardinals and limited damage, working three innings, giving up one unearned run while striking out three. The story of the night in my eyes for Calvert Hall was the work done by Sophomore righty Peter Bashore, as he followed Rodriguez with 2.1 innings of hitless ball out of the 'pen, racking up three strikeouts in dominant fashion.

Archbishop Spalding

Parker Thomas RHP / SS / Archbishop Spalding, MD / 2023

Coming into the Spring of 2023, Thomas was named PBR Maryland's Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and Friday night proved why. Thomas got the start and worked five hitless innings, walking four and striking out eleven, throwing 59% strikes. Possessing a ton of confidence on the bump, the arm works quick out of a high three-quarter release, mixing a devastating three pitch mix in any count for strikes. The fastball comes out well with ride through the zone at 88-91 mph, mixing a slider/curveball combo that tunneled well off the fastball. The slider shows sharp 10/4 shape with some depth to it at 76-78 mph, while the curveball showed bigger 11/5 shape at 73-76 mph; both thrown for strikes in any count. The big right-hander had to pitch out of some jams through the night, some due to walks and others because of errors, but Thomas always seemed to buckle down and make a big pitch when needed.

Jake Yeager RHP / OF / Archbishop Spalding, MD / 2024

The University of Maryland commit came out of the 'pen for the Cavaliers and was just about as dominant as Thomas was, working two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out three. Another high octane arm, Yeager works with plenty of intent and pace with clean arm action out of a high three-quarter slot. The fastball was 87-88 mph, touching 89 a few times and 90 mph once, working both sides of the plate with the ability to change eye levels at the top of the zone. The curveball was thrown with confidence, showing bigger 12/6 shape at 73-76 mph and induced consistent weak contact. Pounded the zone to an impressive 70% strike percentage.

Jack McNally C / 3B / Archbishop Spalding, MD / 2025

An intriguing uncommitted Sophomore, McNally consistently showcases a high contact rate at the dish with the ability to backspin line drives to both gaps. Hitting out of a balanced, slightly crouched stance, McNally utilizes a slight toe-tap stride with solid weight transfer and a more level path through contact. The approach is mature, staying within himself and using the whole field with strength portrayed to the gaps. Positional versatility is also something to see, as McNally is primarily a catcher but showcases clean actions at the hot corner with obvious arm strength. Finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI double.

Brennan Inscoe SS / 2B / Archbishop Spalding , MD / 2024

Another player that caught my eye at the dish is the uncommitted Junior infielder. Inscoe got a pinch-hit opportunity late in the game, and delivered with an RBI single up the middle. A quiet, taller setup pre-pitch, Inscoe showcases really nice weight transfer with some hand separation and a level path through. Creating extension, the approach is to the middle fo the field with hard line drive tendencies.

Calvert Hall

Peter Bashore RHP / Calvert Hall, MD / 2025

This was certainly an impressive outing for the uncommitted Sophomore, and a great opportunity for me to get a first look at him. The frame is long and athletic, working with controlled pace on the bump with some arm speed through release. An athletic finish, landing to the first base side of the bump, Bashore gets over the front side well with some lower half drive through. The fastball showed consistent sink and hard arm side run, working mostly 84-85 mph on the night and showed the ability to ramp up to 86 and 87 mph a few times. The slider showed shorter shape and tended to back up, creating swing and miss at 77-78 mph. This is an uncommitted arm that has a ton of life and plenty left in the tank, and adds his name to a loaded class of 2025 across the state of Maryland.
