Friday night featured a pivotal game as Boonsboro went on the road and traveled to Catoctin. Boonsboro turned the ball over to an up and coming Junior Righty in Matthew Koeneke, while Catoctin gave the ball to Dalton Williams (High Point).

Catoctin opened the scoring in the 3rd with a two-strike, two RBI single off the bat of Senior catcher Dylan Nicholson to take an early 2-0 lead. As Dalton Williams (High Point) was cruising through four innings for Catoctin on the bump, the Cougars added two more runs in the fourth from a two RBI single off the bat of Sophomore outfielder Logan Malachowski to push the lead to 4-0. In the fifth, Boonsboro capitalized on three Catoctin errors to narrow the score to 4-3. The Cougars added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth off of a perfectly executed Suicide Squeeze off the bat of Junior first baseman Peyton Castellow to push the score to 5-3. The score would remain, as Malachowski came in to secure the win in the seventh.

Boonsboro

Blake Kellerman RHP / Boonsboro , MD / 2022

Came in relief for Boonsboro in their game against Catoctin, working two innings, giving up one earned run while striking out three. Pitches out of a shorter, deliberate side-step delivery with quick arm action out of a tough three-quarter slot. Pounded the zone early and often, throwing nineteen strikes out of his twenty eight pitches. The fastball was thrown with confidence, showcasing feel to the arm side at 82-83 with much more in the tank. The curveball played well off the fastball, showcasing bigger 11/5 shape with some sharp break at 66-67.

Matthew Koeneke OF / 3B / Boonsboro , MD / 2023

One of the more eye-opening appearances came from the uncommitted Junior two-way out of Boonsboro. Got the start on the bump for the Warriors, working four innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out four. Pitches out of a tough side-arm slot with whippy, quick arm action, working up-tempo with intent. The fastball comes out of the hand well, showcasing natural arm side run with evident and consistent feel to the arm side at 84-87, topping out at 88. The slider tunnels well with the fastball, showcasing tight break with excellent lateral movement at 75-76. Over the four innings of work, Koeneke induced consistent weak contact and showed the ability to work the FB/SL mix for strikes in any count. One to keep eyes on.

Peyton Castellow LHP / OF / Catoctin , MD / 2023

Logan Malachowski OF / RHP / Catoctin, MD / 2024

Dylan Nicholson C / Catoctin, MD / 2022

The athletic, but physical backstop continues to progress on both sides of the ball, and the swing stood out in Friday’s game against Boonsboro. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched stance at the plate, showcasing an aggressive whole field approach with line drive tendencies to the gaps and alleys. The hands work quick, staying inside the ball well consistently with solid balance throughout. Finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Dalton Williams OF / RHP / Catoctin , MD / 2022

The uber-projectable High Point commit got the start for Catoctin on the bump in their game against Boonsboro on Friday night. Differentiates the delivery, pitching out of an extended side-step into a tall balance point. The arm works quick with regular effort out of a high three-quarter slot, occasionally mixing slots to provide deception. Gets over the front side well, falling off slightly to the first base side of the mound. The fastball explodes out of the hand, showcasing excellent feel to the arm side with some run at 87-89, topping out at 90. The slider was thrown with confidence in any count, showcasing tight 10/4 shape with swing and miss ability at 80-82. Occasionally mixed the changeup at 79-80. The velo will continue to tick up as more and more strength is added to the frame, with the ability to get into the low to mid 90’s. Quick, clean arm action bodes well in the future for the long 6-5 hurler. Picked up the win for the Cougars, working six innings, giving up three unearned runs, three hits while punching out eight.
