Wednesday night featured a pivotal game in the SMAC as two undefeated teams battled it out as #6 Chopticon made the trip to #5 Patuxent. Two heavyweight righty's took the hill for their respective teams, as Senior Howard (Allen) Miller (Shepherd) got the ball for Chopticon and Uncommitted Senior Jeff DeLair got the ball for Patuxent.

Chopticon struck first in the top of the first after a double by Howard (Allen) Miller (Shepherd) that put runners on second and third. A wild pitch would force home a run as Chopticon took an early 1-0 lead. The score would remain until the bottom of the second, as Patuxent rallied after a single from DeLair and stole home later in the inning to tie the game at one a piece. In the fourth, Junior infielder Casey Alvey drove in Chopticon's second run with a single through the left side to break the tie, and Junior outfielder Steven Guy drove in another with an infield single up the middle to extend the lead to 3-1. Patuxent would scratch across a run to make the score 3-2, before a monstrous RBI double off the bat of Dilon Adkins (Tennessee) would extend the lead to 4-2 for Chopticon. In the bottom of the sixth, Junior Ryan Moran found some grass for an RBI bloop single, followed by a huge RBI double off the bat of Junior middle infielder Cameron Bott to tie the game. DeLair would force a bases loaded walk to take the lead, followed by insurance runs provided by a three RBI double by Junior Kaleb Elliott. Moran, who pitched the sixth and the seventh, slammed the door in the final frame, as Patuxent won 8-4.

Chopticon

Dillon Adkins OF / LHP / Chopticon, MD / 2025

There’s no question why the University of Tennessee commit is regarded as one of the best Freshman across the Old Line State. The athleticism and advanced strength in the frame is eye-opening, as he can impact the game at any time on both sides of the ball. At the dish, the hands are strong and work quick through contact, utilizing an aggressive, whole field approach with plenty of evident strength to the pull side. Synchs into the lower half well, creating some natural lift through the zone with line drive tendencies to the gaps and alleys. In the bottom of the sixth, Adkins turned on an inside fastball and hit an RBI double off the wall in right-center field that missed going over the wall by about a foot. The sky is the limit for the projectable outfielder.

Howard (Allen) Miller Jr RHP / 3B / Chopticon , MD / 2022

Got the start for Chopticon on the bump in their game against Patuxent. The long 6-4, 195 pound Shepherd University commit attacked the zone with intent, utilizing quick, whippy arm action from a tough three-quarter slot. Controlled the inner third early on in the outing, showcasing feel for the fastball to the arm side with occasional run at 85-87, topping out at 88. The curveball was thrown with confidence, showcasing bigger 12/6 shape with some late bite at 72-74. Consistently mixed speeds, working each pitch in the arsenal for strikes throughout the game. Worked five innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs while striking out seven.

Jeff DeLair RHP / 3B / Patuxent, MD / 2022

Got the start for Patuxent on the bump and worked with quick pace and tempo throughout his five innings of work. Tall, balanced build-up with a high leg kick into a kick out stride, showcasing strong leg drive down the bump and quick arm speed through release. Showcased consistent feel for all four pitches in the arsenal, working the fastball to both sides of the plate at 83-85. Mixed the curveball and slider extremely well, showcasing bigger 12/6 shape to the curveball for strikes at 68-70, and sharper, late break to a 10/4 slider at 72-74. The difference maker was the changeup that was thrown in any count, showcasing excellent fade action to the arm side at 75-76. The uncommitted Senior righty showcases a “bulldog” like mentality on the bump, attacking hitters throughout. Over the five innings of work, DeLair struck out nine while giving up two earned runs.
