MD/DE Scout Blog: Clear Spring at Catoctin

Tuesday night featured a highly anticipated matchup as the Clear Spring Blazers made the trip into the mountains to face off against the Catoctin Cougars for the 1A West Region II Championship. At first glance, the game had the makings to be one of the better pitching duels of the year, as the Blazers turned the ball to Junior lefty Hutson Trobaugh (Radford) and the Cougars gave the ball to their horse in Senior righty Dalton Williams (High Point).

Clear Spring scratched across the first run of the game in the third, as Sophomore Shortstop Dawson Kehr blooped an RBI single into right field, notching his second hit of the ball game to that point. In the bottom of the fourth, Catoctin finally broke through, as Junior infielder Joey McMannis (Maryland) laced a solo homerun to left field, tying the score at 1 a piece. The Blazers would answer immediately with a huge eight run top of the fifth to take a 9-1 lead. Senior Malakai Cunningham, Junior Hutson Trobaugh and Junior Logan Helser all had big hits and RBI in the inning to lead the charge. In the sixth, the Cougars tacked on three runs, led by doubles from Shortstop Bryont Green, Junior Joey McMannis (Maryland) and Senior Logan Simanski to make the score 9-4. Clear Spring would really pull away in the top of the seventh, as Trobaugh, Helser and Kehr all had RBI in the inning to take a 13-4 lead. The Blazers would go on to win the game and the 1A West Region II Championship by a score of 13-5.

Clear Spring advances to the State Quarterfinals, where the eight remaining teams will be reseeded with the top four earning home games.
