MD/DE Scout Blog: Georgetown Prep at Calvert Hall

Saturday, March 25th brought us an intriguing and high-powered showdown between the Georgetown Prep Hoyas and the Calvert Hall Cardinals. With rosters loaded on both sides, we knew this was going to be a battle between to premier programs across the state, and it certainly lived up to the hype. 

The Hoyas got off to a good start in the top of the first, as two walks and a single brought Junior Ryan Maxey (George Mason) to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Maxey cashed in with an RBI sac fly, giving the Hoyas an early 1-0 lead. Calvert Hall responded in the bottom of the 2nd with a four spot, led by an RBI bunt single by Sophomore infielder Thomas Pilarski and a huge three-run homerun off the bat of Senior infielder Jake Butler (George Mason). With one out in the top of the 4th, Georgetown Prep strung together a rally, as a single by Sophomore two-way Austin Weiss (Maryland) and two walks brought Senior two-way Tommy Roldan (Virginia) to the plate, where he ambushed a 1-1 pitch for a two RBI double to deep right-center field. Later in the inning, Maxey cashed in again, this time a two-out, two RBI single up the middle to give the Hoyas a 5-4 lead. Calvert Hall didn't waste any time in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring four runs without a single ball leaving the infield, as two walks and two bunt singles by EJ Hankerson and Brayden Wolf led the inning. Calvert Hall would scratch across two more in the 5th off of a two RBI single by Sophomore backstop Brayden Wolf, and would go on to win the game 10-6. 

 

 

Georgetown Prep

 

Antonio Perrotta 1B / Georgetown Prep, MD / 2023

A physical, imposing presence, the University of Virginia commit stands 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and showcases plenty of strength and athleticism on both sides of the ball. A mainstay at first base, Perrotta moves well around the bag and showcases solid range side-to-side, proving so with a really nice diving stab early in the game. At the dish, the hands work quick out of a crouched, balanced stance and showcases a consistent ability to stay short through contact. When in plus counts, the power and raw strength to the pull side is legit and looks to carry over to the next level. The two strike approach is special as well, as the swing gets even shorter and Perrotta relies on his raw strength and awareness for the barrel to pound the middle of the field. Utilizing line drive tendencies, with the ability to lift to the pull side bodes well for the physical first baseman's future. 

 

Andrew Duncan CF / RHP / Georgetown Prep , MD / 2025

My first extended look at Duncan on the bump was a good one, and made me realize just how special his two-way ability is. At 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, the frame is long and athletic with the ability to fill out and add even more strength to it. On the mound, it's a shorter side-step delivery with easy, repeatable actions and some arm speed through a high three-quarter release. Challenges hitters with the upper 80's fastball and shows solid feel for it to both sides of the plate, mixing a shorter shaped slider that had some late bite to it at 75-77 mph. Didn't show the strongest feel for the zone on the day, walking three over two innings of work, however the arsenal showcases promise when in the zone that bodes well for the future. 

 

Austin Weiss LHP / OF / Georgetown Prep, MD / 2025

Georgetown Prep continues to dish out advanced young talent, and Weiss is another one to add to the list. The two-way University of Maryland recruit was up to 90 mph on the bump earlier this Spring when I saw him, but I'm going to focus on the bat in this writeup. It's a tall, balanced setup with some rhythm in the hands and lower half, creating solid separation with an explosive uphill path through contact. The strength is evident to the pull side, creating some torque in the hips with fluid actions. As the barrel awareness gets stronger, and the frame continues to fill out, you could see some serious power numbers generated by Weiss in the near future. Finished the game 2-for-4 with two loud singles to right field. 

 

Tommy Roldan LHP / OF / Georgetown Prep, MD / 2023

The University of Virginia recruit continues to impress at the dish, and the shear power and presence at the plate is eye-opening. Utilizing plenty of torque in the hips/lower half allows Roldan to showcase his plus power to the pull side, and the ability to create lift should bode well for increased power numbers throughout the Spring. The hands are loose and quick with fluid actions and a he possesses a moxie at the dish that is tough to compare with anyone else in the state. The only slight downfall may be the plate discipline. When Roldan gets into plus counts and is able to hunt his pitch, he is one of the more feared hitters in the state, however he tends to occasionally get himself out on balls below the zone that produce weak contact. A high-octane two-way with a bright future on both sides of the ball.

 

Ryan Maxey SS / RHP / Georgetown Prep, MD / 2024

I have had the luxury to watch Maxey transform into the player he is today, and the George Mason recruit continues to make strides and improve his game year in and year out. The frame has gotten stronger, and the swing cleaner with loud, consistent line drive tendencies to the middle of the field. A confidence that exudes on both sides of the ball, Maxey showcases defensive versatility that bodes well for his chance to make an early impact at the next level.  

 

Calvert Hall

 

Jake Butler 3B / 2B / Calvert Hall, MD / 2023

The George Mason recruit has exploded onto the scene in the past year or so, and continues to make his case as the best prep infielder across the state. An explosive top of the order type bat showcases tools that impact the game in all facets. Butler can really pick it up the middle with arm strength that should keep him on the left side of the infield at the next level, and speed along with a baseball IQ that helps with range and actions defensively. At the dish, the hands are quick with whippy barrel speed through and a controlled, aggressive approach to all fields. Strength to the pull side for now looks to transform to more gap-to-gap power as the frame continues to get stronger, with an awareness for the barrel that is impressive. Finished the game 2-for-4 with a three run homerun and a single through the 6-hole. 

 

Kaden Barmer OF / Calvert Hall College, MD / 2025

An outfield at Calvert Hall loaded with young talent, Barmer has separated himself amongst the rest and is starting to take that next step into becoming a mainstay towards the top of a loaded MD/DE Class of 2025. The swing still needs to clean up a little, but the ability to impact the game with his speed is special. Defensively, Barmer is a ball hawk in center field, chasing down fly balls in both gaps with ease and arm strength that continues to get stronger year by year. The contact rate needs to improve, especially with the ability to beat out almost any infield ground ball, and look for that to come to fruition in the coming months.
