Thursday night featured the first game of a three game series to determine the IAC Champion between the Landon Bears and the Georgetown Prep Hoyas. Landon gave the ball to Senior righty Robbie Lee (Denison) and Georgetown Prep turned the ball over to Junior lefty Tommy Roldan (Virginia).

The Hoyas got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Junior two-way standout Tommy Roldan (Virginia) laced a two RBI double to dead center field. Landon would cut into the deficit in the top of the third, as Senior Ryan Groban would send a no doubter over the wall in left for a solo homerun, pulling the Bears within 1, making it 2-1. That was as close as the Bears got, as Georgetown Prep would score eight runs in the third inning, taking a commanding 10-1 lead. The eight run third was led by Senior Ryan Rodriguez (Franklin & Marshall), Junior Antonio Perrotta (Virginia), Sophomore Ryan Maxey and Senior William Burgess (High Point). The Hoyas would not look back, winning the first game of the three game series 13-1 in five innings.

The second game of the three game series will be played at Landon, with Georgetown Prep looking for the two game sweep and take the IAC Championship.

Landon

Ryan Groban LHP / 1B / Landon, MD / 2022

Provided a huge spark early on for Landon with a solo home run to left field in the third inning. Hits from a balanced, taller stance with solid hand separation and a shorter, quick stride. The barrel gets through the zone quick, pulling the hands inside well with barrel awareness portrayed.

Georgetown Prep

William Burgess LHP / OF / Georgetown Prep, MD / 2022

Ryan Maxey SS / RHP / Georgetown Prep, MD / 2024

The uber-athletic middle infielder impresses each time I've seen him this Spring, and Thursday night was no different. The hands work quick through contact, consistently showcasing barrel awareness and the ability to get to tough pitches in and around the zone. Hits with rhythm in the hands with quick twitch, utilizing a slightly uphill swing path with strength to the whole field. More of a line drive approach, Maxey showcases the ability to drive balls into both gaps with ease, being a real table setter in the Hoya lineup. Finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Antonio Perrotta 1B / Georgetown Prep, MD / 2023

There’s a ton to like out of the physical University of Virginia commit, showcasing a keen ability to hit for both a high average and power at the plate. Hits from a balanced, taller stance with some rhythm in the hands and a bigger leg kick load and stride. The hands stay inside the ball well, showcasing consistent barrel control and the ability to hit for strength to the pull side. Utilizes smooth, fluid actions at the plate, getting the barrel through the zone quick with plenty of strong line drive tendencies. Finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Tommy Roldan LHP / OF / Georgetown Prep, MD / 2023

Hitting: One of the more explosive two-way athletes in the state, Roldan can impact the game at any moment, and does so in all phases. At the plate, the stance is balanced with slight bend in the knees and rhythm in the hands pre-pitch. Utilizes a bigger leg kick load, creating excellent hand separation with quick twitch through the zone. The hands work quick to contact with whippy barrel action through the zone and excellent extension through and past contact. The approach is sound, consistently lacing line drives to the middle of the field with eye-opening pop to the pull side. Finished the game 1-for-2 with a two RBI double, a walk and a run scored.

Pitching: Got the start for the Hoyas on the bump and was absolutely dominant through his four innings of work. Works out of a repeatable delivery, synching into the lower half well with a taller balance point. The arm works quick out of a full arm circle release from a high three-quarter slot, getting over the front side extremely well with strong feel for the three pitch arsenal. The fastball explodes out of the hand with feel to all quadrants of the zone, occasionally rising the fastball to the top of the zone to get swings and misses at 88-90, topping out at 91in the second inning. The curveball was thrown with confidence in any count, showcasing sharp downer action with 1/7 shape at 70-72, mixing in a late diving changeup at 80-82. Pitching in tough, rainy conditions, Roldan showed a ton of composure and attacked hitters with confidence, working four innings, giving up just one run on one hit while striking out six.
