A big early week matchup in the MIAA “A” Conference saw #3 Archbishop Curley playing host to #4 John Carroll. The Friars turned to their ace, right-handed pitcher Ryan Edmonds (George Mason) and the Patriots gave the ball to an up and coming Sophomore righty in Aaron Snyder.

Both pitchers were on their game early on, as neither offense could push a run across through three innings. Edmonds worked around two walks in the first, before striking out the side the next three innings, with a single mixed in the third by Junior third baseman Frank Adamski (Coastal Carolina). The Friar offense finally broke through in the fourth, as Sophomore outfielder Blake Dean hit a ground ball to the right side that got through the infield plating two runs. In the fifth, the Friar offense broke out, scoring three runs to take a 5-0 lead. In the inning, Senior outfielder Virgil Watson Jr doubled to lead off the inning, eventually scoring off of a John Carroll error. After an Edmonds single, Junior third baseman John Petryszak cashed in on a long sac fly to right field. Senior catcher Zach Gaeta (Salisbury) punched in the final run of the inning with a sharp RBI single through the six hole. Fast forward to the sixth and Petryszak notched his second hit of the day with a two RBI double down the right field line to push the score to 8-0. Edmonds struck out the side once again in the sixth, tallying his sixteenth strikeout of the evening on an 89 mph fastball. In the seventh, with Edmonds out of the game, the Patriot offense finally found some life, scoring four runs led by a two RBI double off the bat of Junior outfielder Griffin Shirk, an RBI single by Senior corner infielder Matt Archibald and an RBI bloop single by Freshman shortstop Will Rhine (Maryland). Senior righty Emilio Rodriguez finally got out of the inning, inducing an infield pop up to end the game, as the Friars took this one 8-4 over the Patriots.

The story of the night was Senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Edmonds (George Mason). The physical righty worked six scoreless innings, giving up just three hits, two walks while striking out sixteen. The Friar offense was led by Junior third baseman John Petryszak who went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. The Patriot offense was led by Senior corner infielder Matt Archibald, tallying three hits.

John Carroll

Frank Adamski 3B / RHP / John Carroll, MD / 2023

The Coastal Carolina commit has really showcased well at the plate this year, driving balls to both gaps with authority and showcasing the ability to get the barrel to tough pitches consistently. The actions are fluid and clean with nice hand rhythm and an elongated stride at the dish. The hands get through the zone quickly with whippy barrel action and a strong middle of the field line drive approach. Defensively, Adamski shows that he can stay at third at the next level, showcasing quick, active feet and solid lateral range. The arm strength continues to improve and the hands are becoming more fluid and soft with the continued reps. Finished the game going 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Matt Archibald RHP / 3B / John Carroll, MD / 2022

Usually known for the pitching ability, Archibald showed he can really handle the bat throughout the game against Archbishop Curley, utilizing a strong whole field line drive approach with doubles pop to the gaps and alleys. Hits from a balanced, slightly hunched over stance with a rhythmic toe-tap load and solid hand separation. The barrel gets through quick, showcasing consistent barrel awareness throughout the game and a controlled, aggressive approach. Finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Griffin Shirk 1B / OF / John Carroll, MD / 2023

One of the better uncommitted bats in a loaded Maryland Class of 2023, Shirk continuously showcases athleticism on both sides of the ball. The barrel gets through the zone quickly, showcasing the ability to cut the swing down and cover the outside pitch well. Mostly stays middle to pull side with the approach, utilizing a level bat path and strong line drive tendencies. Hits third for the Patriots, showcasing doubles pop with more to come as the body continues to fill out. Finished the game 1-for-4 with a two RBI double down the right field line.

Aaron Snyder C / RHP / John Carroll, MD / 2024

Got the start for the Patriots, working four innings, giving up two runs on two hits (none earned) with three strikeouts. Works out of a short side-step delivery from a three-quarter release and works in occasional cross body through release. The arm works short and quick, hiding the ball well and working the fastball to both sides of the plate effectively at 82-84, topping out at 85 early on. Changes speeds well, mixing in feel for a slider with 10/4 shape at 71-73.

Archbishop Curley

Blake Dean OF / RHP / Archbishop Curley, MD / 2024

Dean came up big in the fourth inning in the game against John Carroll, staying short on a two-strike offering and lining a single through the right side to break the 0-0 tie for two RBI. Hits from a balanced, square stance with the hands pre-set high. Quick, medium sized leg kick with a more level bat path, showcasing the ability to cut the swing down and use the whole field.

Ryan Edmonds RHP / 3B / Archbishop Curley , MD / 2022

The George Mason commit continues to showcase why he is regarded as one of the best arms in the MIAA, and has transitioned well into the “Ace” role for the Friars after the graduation of standout righty Jake Michel (Richmond) a year ago. The three pitch mix is devastating and works all three for strikes consistently. The fastball works as the out pitch and the feel for the pitch in and around the zone is advanced. Creates excellent lower half drive down the bump, throwing from a high three-quarter slot with the ability to work the fastball to all quadrants of the zone. The slider plays down with some late bite, inducing swings and misses. The physical righty ran the fastball up to 89 on the day, sitting in the 87-88 mph range, mixing in the slider at 72-75 and the curveball at 69-71.

John Petryszak Jr 1B / 3B / Archbishop Curley, MD / 2023

All season long, we have seen nothing but hard, loud contact on a consistent basis at the dish from the athletic corner infielder. The frame is lean, with strength throughout and even more room to fill out and add muscle. Really like the actions at the dish, utilizing a smooth back load with some rhythm in the hands, hitting from a balanced, slightly open stance. Rhythmic toe-tap load into solid hand speed through contact with a consistent whole field line drive approach. Showcased the opposite field strength once again in the game against John Carroll, going 2-for-3 with a backside double, a single to right field, a long sac fly to right center field and three RBI.
