A big early week matchup in the 2A East Region I saw #8 and undefeated North East play host to a very solid Rising Sun Tigers squad. The matchup lived up to the hype, as two Senior arms went toe-to-toe as Rising Sun turned to their two-way leader in Hayden Spioch and North East handed the ball to their righty ace in Towson University commit Jacob Whiteman

Spioch battled through a tough North East lineup throughout the night, working himself out of jams and inducing consistent weak contact throughout the night. A couple of mistakes over the heart of the plate did him in, as the North East lineup capitalized on what was just a few mistakes throughout. In the first inning, Whiteman knocked in the first North East run with a sac fly RBI to left field. The score remained until the third, as Senior first baseman Austin Keefer started a rally with a backside single, eventually scoring on a long RBI double off the bat of Sophomore third baseman Ryan James. North East added two more insurance runs in the fourth, as Whiteman helped his cause once again with a backside two RBI double down the right-field line. The score would remain the same, as North East took it 4-1.

The story of the night was Senior righty and Towson University commit Jacob Whiteman as he picked up the win, working six and two-thirds innings pitched, giving up just one earned run while striking out twelve. Sophomore catcher Ethan Flaugher was a bright spot both behind the dish and at the plate, working in sync with Whiteman throughout the game and adding a single and two walks at the plate.

North East

Ethan Flaugher C / 3B / North East , MD / 2024

Throughout Monday’s contest against Rising Sun, Flaugher continuously showcased why he is regarded as one of the top uncommitted players in the MD/DE Class of 2024. At the plate, the PBR Junior Future Games alum showcases a quick, whippy barrel with strong, fluid hands through contact with plenty of rhythm. Utilizing a short toe-tap load and stride, the hands separate nicely and explode through the zone with a more uphill swing path. Hits with an aggressive, whole field approach, showcasing the ability to hit for strength to the gaps and alleys with consistent hard line drives to the middle of the field. Behind the dish, the arm strength is present with much more in the tank, showcasing strong, accurate throws to the bag with above average receiving skills. Showcases quick feet on transfers with the ability to block and recover at a high level. Finished the game 1-for-2 with a single and two walks.

Austin Keefer 1B / RHP / North East, MD / 2022

The physical uncommitted Senior showed well in his plate appearances throughout the game against Rising Sun, notching a backside single in the early innings. Hits from a balanced, tall stance with solid separation in the hands. Utilizes a shorter kick out stride, staying behind the ball well and keeping the hands inside with the ability to get the barrel to the inside pitch. Utilizes a more level swing path with strong line drive tendencies to all fields.

Jacob Whiteman RHP / 3B / North East, MD / 2022

Got the start for North East in a pivotal 2A East Region I matchup against Rising Sun. The Indians ace and Towson University commit possesses a long, lean 6-3, 190 pound frame with still plenty of room to fill out and add strength. Pitches out of the stretch, working with a bigger leg kick into a tall balance point and a longer kick out stride down the mound. Full arm circle delivery, pitching with intent with quick arm action and regular effort. Attacked the zone with intent throughout his outing, showcasing feel for the fastball/breaking ball mix with the ability to throw any pitch in any count for strikes. The fastball came out of the hand well at 86-87, hitting 88 a few times to all quadrants of the zone, showcasing occasional arm side run that showed effectiveness against right-handed batters. The breaking ball was thrown with confidence, occasionally mixing shapes with tight break at 73-75. Consistently missed barrels throughout his 6.2 innings pitched, striking out twelve and giving up just one earned run.

Rising Sun

Hayden Spioch RHP / 3B / Rising Sun, MD / 2022

Got the start for Rising Sun and did well navigating through a deep and talented North East lineup. Pitches out of a shorter side-step delivery with a slight turn in the hips at balance point. The arm works short and quick from a three-quarter slot, hiding the ball well and showcasing feel for the fastball/slider mix. Worked up-tempo throughout the outing, showcasing solid arm side run on the fastball at 80-82, mixing in feel for a tight downward slider at 69-70.
