#1 Sherwood traveled to Magruder in a rain stricken day in Montgomery County on Tuesday night. A matchup that I had circled at the beginning of the week, Magruder has been scoring runs at a remarkable rate and this game had the makings to be really good.

The Warriors handed the ball to Senior southpaw Ben Berger (Frostburg State) and the Colonels went with Junior southpaw Hudson Green. Sherwood jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st, led by a leadoff triple off the bat of Senior Brian Scott (Maryland) who was knocked in by an RBI single by Senior Amari Allen (Chipola). Senior Ben Berger (Frostburg State) wasted no time and followed Allen's single with an RBI double to give the Warriors their second run of the inning. That is all the run support Berger would need, as he took a no hitter into the 4th. Magruder did threaten in the 4th, as a lead off single by Senior Jack Crickey brought Junior Hunter St Denis to the dish. With one out, St Denis deposited an opposite field double off the wall that looked to score Crickey, however the run was cut down at the plate by a picture perfect relay. Berger would go on to finish the game on the bump, picking up the complete game victory for Sherwood as they won 2-0.

Sherwood

Ben Berger LHP / OF / Sherwood , MD / 2023

In our first look at Berger this Spring, it was certainly an impressive one; shutting out a very formidable Magruder lineup and doing so in relatively easy fashion. Possessing plenty of moxie and confidence on the bump, the Frostburg State recruit works with pace out of close to an over the top slot and controlled intent down the bump. Getting over the front side well, the fastball worked in the low to mid 80's early, before settling in the 81-83 mph range and held velo fairly well. Really liked the feel for both sides of the plate with the ability to change eye levels that made the breaking ball that much tougher. The curveball was thrown with confidence in the mid 70's with the ability to back door it to right-handed hitters consistently, also showcasing swing and miss tendencies when down and in to the back foot. The changeup was thrown sparingly, but does show development and promise when down in the zone.

Brian Scott CF / RHP / Sherwood, MD / 2023

When talking about athleticism and pure explosiveness in this MD 2023 class, Brian Scott is certainly a name that will pop up consistently. In another look at the University of Maryland commit on Tuesday night, the added strength and ability to now consistently backspin line drives to the gaps and alleys stuck out. In what used to be a simple line drive/singles hitter has transformed into legit power and a force to be reckon with at the top of the Sherwood lineup. The speed continues to make an impact on both sides of the ball and the actions defensively are fluid and clean, allowing Scott to consistently showcase the tools that are fun to watch.

Magruder

Hunter St Denis 1B / 3B / Magruder, MD / 2024

There is no question that St Denis possesses some of the more raw power across the state, and the big corner infielder showcased that well on Tuesday night. Synching into the back side well, the hands showcase some whippy action with quick barrel speed through contact. Utilizing a more level stroke, backspin is naturally created with the ability to showcase the power to all fields.

Matt Strahan SS / OF / Magruder, MD / 2026

Strahan is a 2026 that caught my eye at last year's MD Underclass Fall Select, and the swing and actions at the plate certainly impressed on Tuesday night. It's a simple setup with rhythm in the hands, creating some separation in the hands with line drive tendencies to the middle of the field. The swing has fluidity to it and look for power numbers to increase as strength gets added to the frame.
