Monday night saw one of, if not the best pitching matchup so far this Spring as two southpaws went toe-to-toe against one another. Senior lefty Ben Moore (Old Dominion) got the ball for Linganore and Urbana countered with their own lefty Ace in Brendan Yagesh (Mount St. Mary’s).

Both pitchers were dominant early on, until Urbana opened the scoring in the fourth, as Junior outfielder/left-handed pitcher Keegan Johnson (Ball State) received a one out walk and proceeded to steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore infielder Connor Roussel scored Johnson from third with an RBI groundout, giving the Hawks the lead. The score remained until the sixth inning, as Moore gave up a leadoff infield single to Junior infielder Riley Smith, followed by an error on a ground ball off the bat of Yagesh and a walk to Junior catcher Andrew Purcell. After striking out Johnson, Moore threw a wild pitch, plating Smith from third, followed by another RBI groundout from Roussel. Yagesh slammed the door in the sixth and the seventh, preserving the win for the Hawks, as they took the game 3-0.

Yagesh was as dominant as it gets, throwing a complete game one hit shutout, while striking out a school record sixteen batters. Moore struggled slightly with the fastball command throughout, scattering five walks over his six innings of work, giving up one hit, three runs (one earned) and striking out seven. The Urbana offense was led by Smith,1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored, Sophomore two-way Eli Derossi-Cytron, 1-for-2 with a walk and Roussel with his two RBI groundouts.

The long, lean, projectable Mount St Mary’s commit possesses a 6-2, 190 pound frame with still plenty of room to fill out and add strength. Short side-step delivery into a tall balance point, landing in line to home plate consistently. The arm works quick and clean through release from a high three-quarter slot, getting over the front side well with strong lower half drive down the bump. Hides the ball well, working strong, advanced feel for the fastball/curveball mix. The fastball worked both sides of the plate and came out of the hand really well to all quadrants of the zone at 87-89, topping out at 90 mph twice. The curveball was thrown with confidence in any count, showcasing bigger 1/7 shape with some depth and late break down at 71-73 (2450-2550 rpm). Induced plenty of swings and misses throughout the outing, filling up the zone early and often with intent. The fastball showed life throughout, settling in at 85-87, topping at 88 towards the later innings. Also showed a change-up with some late dive action at 80-81. One of the better outings we have seen this year from a pitcher, Yagesh worked with pace and showed the ability to get outs with his full arsenal.

The Old Dominion commit worked with solid pace throughout, possessing a long, lean frame with room to fill out. Short side-step delivery into a tall balance point, working with regular effort from a high three-quarter slot. Showed the ability to change slots with the breaking ball, dropping down to a three-quarter slot occasionally with some deception. The fastball came out of the hand well, with feel to the arm side at 86-88, topping at 89 mph in the early innings, settling in at 85-87. Showed some sink and ride through the zone, consistently inducing weak contact and swings and misses throughout. The breaking ball showed tight 2/8 shape into right-handed batters, and was the pitch that was turned to when an out was needed. The fastball command was not the sharpest, missing arm side throughout the six innings of work. Moore battled throughout his outing, facing an Urbana lineup that showed depth throughout without his best stuff.
