March is officially underway, and baseball is hitting the ground running across the Old Line State. With some private schools already underway, we turn our attention to our annual conference and team previews. Today, we will highlight four schools in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) "A" Conference and break down key players to watch throughout the high school season.

Archbishop curley friars

Top Pitchers

Anthony Cerone (Jr.) LHP
Hunter Layhew (Jr.) RHP
Dillon Michaloski
(Sr.) RHP
Harry Middlebrooks (Sr.) RHP
Austin Sealing (Jr.) RHP
Brett Townsley (Sr.) RHP

Top Position Players

Anthony Cerone (Jr.) OF
Kevin Goedeke
(Jr.) OF/C
Hunter Layhew
(Jr.) MIF
Harry Middlebrooks (Sr.) 1B
John Petryszak (Sr.) CIF
Austin Sealing (Jr.) MIF

Team Breakdown

The Friars will look fairly different this year, as two-way standout Ryan Edmonds, catcher Zach Gaeta, and right-handed pitchers James Gladden and Emilio Rodriguez all graduated in 2022. Coach Joe Gaeta will now turn to a new set of upperclassmen to lead Curley this year, on both sides of the ball. Seniors such as Harry Middlebrooks (Wilson), Dillon Michaloski, and Brett Townsley (Gettysburg) will look to take over leadership on the bump, with the likes of uncommitted Junior arms in Austin Sealing, Hunter Layhew and Anthony Cerone providing depth. Senior John Petryszak (Frostburg State) is back and will provide plenty of thump in the middle of the order, with Middlebrooks, Kevin Goedeke and Layhew providing a spark at the top. Look for the Friars to find success this year if the pitching holds up, and coach Gaeta can rely on some consistency out of the bottom of the order to turn it over to their big bats at the top.

Parker Thomas

Team Breakdown

The Cavaliers are once again deep in pitching, led by a three headed monster in Parker Thomas (East Carolina), Jake Yeager (Maryland) and Nathan Wines (East Carolina). Seniors Kyle Emmons (Towson) and Cody Sharman (Seton Hall) are also extremely talented and should bring stability throughout the rotation. Offensively and defensively, the loss of Senior leader Caleb Estes (Maryland) is tough, but look for Thomas to move to shortstop when not on the bump to provide consistency up the middle with Carson Merritt and Carver Salazar. Backstop Ethan McNally (James Madison) is one of, if not the most well-rounded catchers in the state and will bring game-changing ability on both sides of the ball. Look for Jack McNally and Michael Joseph to also get key at-bats throughout the season with players such as Oliver Robinson, Jacob Ruiz and Cruz Luna all chomping at the bit.

Team Breakdown

On the offensive side of the ball, Calvert Hall is extremely deep with intriguing talent throughout the lineup, even after the departures of Chase Davalli, John Harris and Lamar King. EJ Hankerson (Maryland), Conner Keys (Glenville State) and Jake Butler (George Mason) will bring experience, athleticism and some thump to the middle of the order with a slew of upperclassmen and underclassmen providing depth throughout. The Cardinals also have Sophomores in Kaden Barmer and Will Haacke that look to provide key AB's this season. On the bump, Calvert Hall will turn to their senior leaders in CJ Garrick (Frostburg State), Patrick Genco (Belmont Abbey), Jackson Kerr (Rider), Ryan Perry (Lenoir-Rhyne) and Ryan Seifert (Shenandoah) to lead the staff. An exciting group with intriguing depth in all facets of the game.

Cooper Sidell (Sr.) RHP

Top Position Players

Cooper Sidell

Team Breakdown

The Gilman Greyhounds have something special brewing in 2023 and can focus on building around one of the more exciting and high octane prep players in Sophomore Peyton Miller (Clemson). Miller will lead the Greyhound staff on the bump, with solid depth provided by Senior Cooper Sidell and Junior Wyatt Randolph. Offensively, Gilman is deep and talented with the likes of Adam Hicks (Gettysburg), Danny Leikus (Rhode Island) and Colin McPherson leading the charge. One of the bigger story lines in 2023 will be the addition of Dominic Moats (Maryland); a physical, uber-athletic outfielder who impacts the game in all facets. If younger players can make an impact on the backend of the rotation, and Miller and Moats can lead the Greyhounds on both sides of the ball, look for Gilman to surprise some people throughout the MIAA this season.
