March is officially underway, and baseball is hitting the ground running across the Old Line State. With some private schools already underway, we turn our attention to our annual conference and team previews. Today, we will highlight four schools in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) "A" Conference and break down key players to watch throughout the high school season.

John Carroll Patriots

Top Pitchers

Matt Bishop (Sr.) LHP
Dallas Brooks (Soph.) RHP
Wyatt Krebs (Sr.) RHP
Christopher Lanzilotta
(Sr.) RHP
Aaron Snyder
(Jr.) RHP
Ben Shutt
(Jr.) RHP

Top Position Players

Frank Adamski (Sr.) 3B
Matt Bishop (Sr.) OF
Dallas Brooks (Soph.) C
Casey Carpenter
(Soph.) CIF
Ethan Ruiz (Sr.) SS
Griffin Shirk
(Sr.) OF
Will Rhine (Soph.) INF

Team Breakdown

John Carroll possesses one of, if not the most explosive lineups across the MIAA and have plenty of intriguing depth throughout. Led by Senior third baseman Frank Adamski (Coastal Carolina) to anchor the middle of the order, the Patriots have a really nice mix of speed and power throughout with upperclassmen leadership in Ethan Ruiz (Salisbury), Griffin Shirk (Salisbury) and Matt Bishop (Wilson). Sophomore phenoms Dallas Brooks (Maryland), Casey Carpenter and Will Rhine (Maryland) will provide a ton of energy and thump throughout the lineup and should produce plenty of runs amongst the three. Sophomore Cameron Leach and Freshman Miguel Leon (Maryland) also look to make an impact on both sides of the ball for Coach Siler in '23.

The only question mark for the Patriots this Spring will be on the bump. The departures of Matt Archibald, Ben Pierce and Will Weiman leaves plenty of obvious openings in the rotation. Seniors Matt Bishop, Wyatt Krebs (Hood), and Christopher Lanzilotta (Washington College) will look to lead the rotation with depth provided by Ben Shutt and Aaron Snyder. Sophomore Brooks Mueller and Freshman Pierce Quinn may also have their name called to provide some very key innings on the bump.

The offensive prowess is eye-opening, and Coach Siler will rely on his depth offensively to provide plenty of run support all season long. If the pitching staff can throw strikes and force weak contact to a very formidable defense behind them, look for John Carroll to compete once again for the MIAA title in 2023.

Loyola-Blakefield dons

Top Pitchers

Dylan Bryan (Sr.) LHP
Wyatt Mummert
(Sr.) LHP
Joseph Nottingham
(Soph.) RHP

Top Position Players

Leo Foust (Sr.) OF
Jake Hauk (Jr.) C
Zach Stolze
(Sr.) INF
Trent Waire (Sr.) SS

Team Breakdown

The Dons will weigh heavily on their two Senior lefty arms in Dylan Bryan (Delaware) and Wyatt Mummert to lead the staff and provide the bulk of key innings on the bump. Loyola also brings in one of the top uncommitted Sophomore arms in the state in transfer Joseph Nottingham; a long, athletic 6-foot-5 righty who runs the fastball into the high 80's consistently, and possesses one of the higher ceilings on the bump.

Coach Mike Kelly will look to Senior leaders in Leo Foust, Trent Waire (Salisbury) and Zach Stolze (Washington College) to lead the offense, with a big power bat in Junior Jacob Hauk to provide some thump in the middle of the order. Look for underclassmen to provide depth throughout and put together key at-bats if Loyola wants to compete for an MIAA title this season.

Mount saint joseph gaels

Top Pitchers

Brody Kelm (Sr.) RHP
Brayden Spurgeon
(Jr.) RHP
Collin Park (Soph.) LHP

Top Position Players

Collin Park (Soph.) OF
Jack Bahouth (Sr.) C
Landon Cooley (Sr.) 3B

Team Breakdown

The departures of key players such as Ripken Reese, Ca'Maury Arrington, Jackson Bauer, Tanner Vicendese and Zach Wainio make this 2023 Gaels team look a bit different and will force Coach Kraska to rely on some younger players to make an impact on both sides of the ball. Keep eyes on two-way Collin Park; a 6-foot-1, 170 pound lefty who brings a ton to like both sides of the ball. Fellow Sophomore Drew Rybinski is another to follow this season, as the power potential and shear strength at the dish will be fun to watch over the next few years.

St. mary's saints

Top Pitchers

Nick Hulme (Jr.) RHP

Top Position Players

Henry Carbone (Jr.) OF
Nick Hulme
(Jr.) 1B
Brennan Moran
(Jr.) C/1B

Team Breakdown

The Saints graduate a bulk of their impact guys on both sides of the ball from a season ago, and will look to build experience with their younger group in 2023.

Three Juniors to keep eyes on are Nick Hulme; a physical 6-foot-5 two-way who will look to lead the Saints on both sides of the ball, Henry Carbone; an uber-athletic outfielder who will bring consistency to the dish, and Brennan Moran; another physical 6-foot-1 two-way that allows Coach Bronakoski to build around in 2023.
