It's finally the Spring of 2022 and our PBR Maryland staff is back on the road covering the High School season with our Boots-On-The-Ground approach to scouting. Throughout the HS season, we will keep a running log of scout notes with video included as we cover the season throughout the state.

Caleb Estes SS 2022 (Maryland)

3.16.22: Estes does just about everything well in all facets of the game. The defense is consistent, showcasing quick feet, solid range side to side and a strong, accurate arm. Hits third for the Cavaliers, showing consistent barrel control with quick, explosive hands through contact. Hits with an excellent whole field approach with present strength and power to the pull side with strong line drive tendencies to the gaps and alleys. Hard-nosed player with high energy and a catalyst in the middle of a deep Cavalier lineup.

 

Kyle Garrett OF 2022 (Shenandoah)

3.15.22: A player that continues to make strides with the swing and consistently produces hard contact at the dish. Hits from a balanced, quiet stance with some bend in the knees. Creates excellent hand separation with some barrel whip through contact. The lower half is explosive, utilizing a strong gap-to-gap approach with line drive tendencies.

 

Matthew Gormley C 2022

3.15.22: A physical bat in the middle of the Cavalier lineup, Gormley possesses present strength to the pull side, utilizing a short, compact stroke with some barrel awareness. Slight leg kick load, syncing into the back side well with nice balance throughout the swing. Creates occasional lift as he peppered a huge three RBI double into left-center, breaking the game open in their game against DeMatha Catholic.

 

Carson Merritt SS 2024

3.16.22: Really impressive day at the plate for Merritt, showcasing a consistent line drive approach to the pull side. Hits from a quiet, crouched stance at the dish with minimal hand movement and a shorter stride. The bat speed is quick with some whip, creating some lift through contact and strong line drive tendencies. The frame is athletic with some quick twitch in all facets.

 

Eddie Sargent LHP/OF 2022 (UMBC)

3.15.22 (Pitching): Got the start for the Cavaliers in their game against DeMatha Catholic, pitching four scoreless innings while striking out seven. Worked with pace and an up-tempo delivery, filling up the zone early and often with his three pitch mix. Consistently attacks the zone with confidence, utilizing quick arm speed through release. The fastball worked all quadrants of the zone and came out of the hand well at 86-88, topping out at 89 mph. The slider showed tight shape with feel down in the zone at 72-73. Mixed in a changeup for strikes with some late fade at 80-81. Consistently induced weak contact through his four innings of work.

3.15.22 (Hitting): Hits out of the leadoff spot for the Cavaliers, and showcases the prototypical top of the order bat with speed and a high contact rate. Hits with rhythm, utilizing the whole field effectively with quick hands through contact. Stays short to contact with a more level bat path, consistently taking what the pitcher gives him and spraying the ball to all fields. Laced a double off the wall to the opposite field, showcasing his ability to hit for strength to all fields as well. Sargent is a catalyst at the top of a very deep and talented lineup for the Cavaliers.

 

Parker Thomas RHP 2023 (East Carolina)

3.16.22: Got the start on the bump against Good Counsel, working with pace and pounding the zone with feel for a three pitch mix. Utilizes a short side-step windup with shorter, quick arm action from a high three-quarter slot. The fastball came out of the hand really well, with feel to all quadrants of the zone at 87-88, topping out at 90 mph. Occasionally showed some arm side run with the fastball, showcasing the ability to move the fastball in and out throughout the lineup. The breaking ball was sharp and tight, filling up the zone and inducing plenty of swings and misses. The changeup was effective down in the zone, playing off the fastball effectively at 78-79 mph. One of the higher end arms across the state and continues to impress each time we see him.

 

Nathan Wines RHP 2025

3.16.22: Wines came out of the ‘pen for the Cavaliers and completely stole the show. The freshman right-hander came in and lit up the gun early, working the fastball to both sides of the plate, with exceptional feel to the glove side. The arm works quick with some deception out of a three-quarter slot attacking the zone with high effort, mixing his arsenal well with intent. The fastball explodes out of the hand at 85-88, mixing in a devastating slider with 10/4 shape at 71-72. An impressive 2025 to watch on the bump all year long.

 

Jake Yeager RHP 2024

3.16.22: Came in relief for the Cavaliers in their game against Good Counsel. Shorter side-step delivery into a tall balance point, getting down the mound in a hurry with lighter effort through release. The arm works quick from a three-quarter slot, pounding the zone early and often with all three pitches. The fastball came out of the hand well at 86-87, topping out at 88 mph with feel to both sides of the plate. Tunnels the slider well, with excellent feel down and away to right-handed batters at 74-75 mph. The changeup shows late sinking action and is effective when down in the zone. One of the more impressive young arms across the state.

Ryan Edmonds RHP 2022 (George Mason)

 

3.19.22 (Hitting): Edmonds is usually known for his arm and pitching ability, however this season is showing he can really handle the bat and be a key piece to the Curley lineup on a consistent basis. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched stance with the hands set at the top of the zone. Bigger leg kick, utilizing solid hand separation and explosion in the hands and lower half. The barrel speed is whippy with a more level bat path, consistently peppering balls into the gaps and alleys with ease. The power and strength is eye-opening, with a sound whole field approach. There's obviously a ton to like on the bump, but if the bat continues to play the way it has at the beginning of this season, you may see the possibility of a two-way spot at George Mason next Fall.

 

3.10.22: The George Mason commit possesses a solid 6-foot-2, 215 pound frame with plenty of strength throughout. Creates really nice lower half drive and torque through release with quick arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Showcased easy effort with intent and seemed to get stronger as his outing continued. The fastball exploded out of the hand, with the ability to move it to all corners of the zone effectively at 86-88, topping out at 90. Mixed in a bigger 11/5 breaking ball for strikes at 70-71. Got the start for the Friars in their game against Bishop McNamara, working four innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out nine.

 

 

James Gladden RHP 2022 (VCU)

3.19.22: Got the start for the Friars against Georgetown Prep, working four innings while striking out five. Pitches out of the stretch with a quick, high leg kick and explosion out of the lower half down the bump. Full arm circle delivery, hiding the ball well that plays into some deception through release. The fastball came out of the hand well, mixing to both sides of the plate at 87-89, topping out at 90 mph. The curveball was sharp and showed late movement, with effectiveness down in the zone at 76-78 mph. Gladden is a raw talent that shows a ton of promise and when he is around the zone on a consistent basis, he is one of the best arms in the conference. If the consistency with the strike zone is on, the effectiveness of his arsenal gets better and better.

 

John Petryszak 1B 2023

3.19.22: The Junior corner infielder had a stellar day at the plate, showcasing the ability to utilize the whole field with strength to the gaps and alleys. Hits from a slightly crouched, balanced stance with excellent hand separation and some bat speed through contact. Attacks the ball with intent, creating nice lift consistently through contact. The frame is physical with athleticism throughout, with big power in the middle of the Curley lineup.

 

Emilio Rodriguez RHP 2022 (Wilson)

3.10.22: The Wilson College commit came out of the bullpen for the Friars, working an inning while striking out two. Command was an issue throughout, however the fastball came out of the hand really well to both sides of the plate at 85-87. The arm works quick through release with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Plenty of athleticism and room to fill out in the frame, with an uptick in velocity in the near future.

Cameron Johnson LHP 2023 (LSU)

3.10.22: Stands at a physical 6-foot-4, 230 pounds. The fastball explodes out of the hand from a tough, low three-quarter slot with quick, loose arm action. Easy, repeatable delivery, running the fastball up to 93 on the night, mostly sitting 91-92 with feel for the bottom of the zone. The slider is thrown with confidence at 75-77 with late bite, inducing plenty of swing and miss. Pitched two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out four.

                                                             

Boys' Latin

 

Matthew Richmond RHP 2022

3.8.22: The physical righty got the start on the bump for Boys’ Latin in their game against John Carroll. Works out of a short side-step delivery with slower, deliberate pace and long to short arm action. The fastball comes out of the hand well, inducing consistent swings and misses early on in his outing at the top of the zone. The fastball sat 81-83, mixing in feel for a big 12/6 breaking ball for strikes at 63-64. Worked two innings, giving up four hits and four runs while striking out four.

 

                                                       

DeMatha Catholic

 

George Baker C 2023 (Louisville) 

3.15.22: One of the more dangerous bats in the DeMatha Catholic lineup, Baker possesses a strong, physical frame with athleticism in all facets. Hits from a balanced, rhythmic stance creating solid hand separation and nice weight transfer to the back leg. The hands are loose and quick, utilizing the lower half well with a more level bat path. The approach is sound, showcasing the ability to hit for power to all fields with barrel awareness and control. Attacks the ball with intent to do damage, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in their game against Archbishop Spalding.


Tyson Nercessian RHP 2022 (McDaniel)

3.15.22: Got the start on the bump against Archbishop Spalding pitching three innings, striking out four while giving up two earned runs. Worked with intent down the bump with shorter, quick arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Consistently mixed speeds throughout the outing, throwing all three pitches for strikes with feel for the fastball to both sides of the plate at 80-82, topping out at 83 mph. The curveball showed to be the “bread and butter” of the arsenal, showing bigger 12/6 shape with feel for the bottom of the zone at 66-67. Occasionally mixed the changeup to the bottom of the zone at 72-73. The arsenal is effective when down, inducing weak contact at the bottom of the zone.


 

                                                     

 

Georgetown Prep

 

Ryan Maxey SS/RHP 2024

3.19.22 (Pitching): Got the start against Archbishop Curley, working three plus innings while striking out four. Works with pace out of a short side-step delivery and a high leg kick to a tall balance point. The arm is quick and short through release, pounding the zone early and often with all three pitches. Showcased the ability to throw all three in any count for strikes, with above average feel for the fastball and breaking ball. The fastball worked mostly to the glove side at 79-81, topping out at 82 mph. The breaking ball was effective when down, showcasing some late depth at 69-72, with the changeup showing some fade at 72-73 mph. An effective arm that pounds the zone and mixes speeds well.


3.19.22 (Hitting): One of the more advanced Sophomore hitters across the Old Line State, Maxey showcases the ability to drive the ball with authority to all fields, with strength shown to the gaps and alleys. Hits from a balanced, quiet stance with the hands set low, creating nice weight transfer to the back leg and explosion in the hips and hands. The bat speed is quick, with a controlled middle of the field approach. One of the more consistent hitters in the Georgetown Prep lineup that should be a spark plug in the middle of the lineup all season long.

 

Ryan Rodriguez MIF 2022 (Franklin & Marshall)

3.19.22: Hits from a slightly crouched, balanced stance with some rhythm in the back load. Solid hand separation, utilizing a simple line drive approach to all fields with strength to the pull side. Showcases some quick twitch through contact and the barrel control is consistent. Another nice piece to keep eyes on throughout this Georgetown Prep lineup, providing protection for their power bats at the top.


Phillip Stasko 3B 2022

3.19.22: We’ve enjoyed the consistency and strength at the dish from Stasko over the years, and he did not disappoint again on Saturday against Archbishop Curley. The hands are pre-set high, with minimal movement and a smooth back load. The bat speed is quick and showcases the ability to pull the hands to get the barrel out on a consistent basis. The ball jumps off the barrel with a strong middle of the field approach.

Gerstell Academy

Dylan Nee OF 2024

3.10.22: Hits leadoff for the Falcons, showcasing an aggressive, whole field approach. Hits with rhythm at the dish with solid hand separation and a slightly uphill swing path. Showcases doubles power to the gaps and alleys with some speed present. Caught one at-bat while I was at the game, in which he drove a standup double down the right field line.

 

Travis Smith RHP 2024

3.10.22: One of the more high octane arms in the MIAA “B” Conference, Smith continues to get better on the bump each time we see him. Came on in relief for Gerstell, working strictly fastballs in his one inning of work. The fastball showed feel to both sides of the plate, working with some arm side run and ride through the zone at 84-86. Athletic mover down the mound, working with easy effort and quick arm speed through release.

Tyler Stuck LHP 2022

3.10.22: Got the start for Gerstell in their scrimmage against Winters Mill. Works out of the stretch with a medium sized leg kick, mixing up his slots occasionally. Showed feel for the fastball, consistently pounding the zone to both sides of the plate at 79-80. Mixed in a few changeups, showcasing some fade at 74-75.

 

                                                      

 

Good Counsel

 

Liam Houghton 1B 2022 (Stevens Institute of Technology)

3.18.22: One of, if not the most consistent power hitters throughout the Good Counsel lineup. Hits from an upright, open stance with a medium sized leg kick and excellent hand separation. The bat path is quick and creates nice lift through contact with present strength to the pull side. Consistently gets the barrel to tough pitches and finds ways to get on base. Physical frame with sneaky athleticism on both sides of the ball. Finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.


Danny Montero 3B 2024

3.18.22: Montero possesses some strength out of an athletic, wiry frame. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched stance with some rhythm in the hands and a smooth back load. Hits with an aggressive approach, staying short to the ball with strength to the gaps and alleys. Got his hands on top of a tough fastball in the first game of their contest against St. John’s Catholic Prep, lacing a double to dead center field. Finished the game 1-for-4.


Stephen Oneto OF 2022 (Washington College)

3.18.22: A big spark in the Falcons lineup, Oneto hits from a balanced, quiet set-up with some hand separation and a shorter leg kick stride. The hands work quick through contact with excellent lift, showcasing the ability to hit for power to the pull side. The ball consistently comes off the barrel well, showcasing the ability to hit to all fields with mostly line drive tendencies. In game, Oneto launched one over the left center field wall for a two-run home run and finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.


Timmy Orie RHP/1B 2022 (Bentley)

3.18.22: Got the start for Good Counsel in their game against St. John’s Catholic Prep. Worked with pace and pounded the zone all game long, going the distance and picking up the win, working seven innings, giving up just one earned run on four hits and striking out eight. Gets over the front side well, working with an over the top slot with some arm speed through release. Easy effort delivery, mixing his three pitch arsenal effectively to both sides of the plate. The fastball worked at 79-81 mph, pitching to contact and mixing in a tight slider that played down in the zone at 72-74 mph. Occasionally mixed in a changeup with some fade at 71-73 mph. Orie will be effective all year long, as he consistently pounds the zone and mixes his speeds well.


Aidan Smith RHP 2023 (West Virginia)

3.16.22: Got the start for the Falcons in their game against Archbishop Spalding. Pitches out of the stretch with a high leg kick to a tall balance point. Utilizes a full arm circle delivery from an over the top slot with quick arm action through release. Pounded the zone early and often in the early innings, working the fastball to both sides of the plate, showcasing occasional arm side run at 88-90 mph. The slider plays as an out pitch when down, showcasing some late bite with some depth at 77-79 mph. Worked three plus innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out five.

Frank Adamski 3B 2023 (Coastal Carolina)

3.8.22: One of the more prolific athletes in the MIAA “A” Conference, Adamski possesses a solid, strong 6-foot-4, 175 pound frame. Balanced stance at the dish with a smooth, fluid back load and explosion out of the lower half through contact. The hands are explosive and quick with whippy barrel action and plenty of strength to the gaps and alleys. Creates some lift with a strong line drive, whole field approach. Went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored in the game against Boys’ Latin.

 

Will Rhine MIF 2025 (Maryland)

3.8.22: Rhine is continuing to raise his stock in a loaded Maryland Class of 2025. The University of Maryland commit possesses a projectable 6-foot-1, 170 pound frame with strength present. Showcased a fluid, rhythmic back load with quick hands through contact. The barrel control is evident, working quick to contact and staying short with two strikes. Present strength showcased to the pull side, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored against Boys’ Latin.

 

Ethan Ruiz SS 2023

3.8.22: The uncommitted middle infielder continues to impress each time we see him. Hit cleanup for the Patriots in their game against Boys’ Latin going 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Hits from a balanced, relaxed stance with the hands set low. Creates nice torque in the lower half, showcasing a consistent line drive approach. Barrel control is evident, turning on an inside fastball for a two RBI double and staying on an outside fastball for an RBI single in the game.

 

Will Weiman RHP 2022 (Goldey-Beacom)

3.8.22: The physical 6-for-4, 220 pound righty got the start on the bump for John Carroll in their game against Boys’ Latin. Worked with pace out of a side-step delivery, utilizing the lower half well through release. Pitched with intent, working the fastball to both sides of the plate effectively at 83-84, topping out at 85. Showed really nice feel for a bigger 12/6 curveball for strikes at 70-72. Worked four no-hit innings, giving up just one walk while striking out six.

 

                                                         

St. John's Catholic Prep

 

David Chandler OF 2023

3.18.22: An interesting player to watch in the St. John’s Catholic Prep lineup, consistently showcasing barrel awareness and a strong pull side, line drive approach. Hits from a tall, balanced stance with minimal hand movement and a smooth back load. The barrel gets through the zone quickly, covering the whole plate with the ability to hit with strength to the pull side.


E.J. Lowry RHP/INF 2023

3.18.22: Lowry came out of the ‘pen for St. John’s Catholic Prep in their game against Good Counsel and attacked the zone from the start. Pitches with a short, side-step delivery from an over the top slot, getting over the front side well with quick arm action through release. The fastball came out well, mixing to all quadrants of the zone with feel east and west. Showcased consistent feel for the slider and showed effectiveness when down in the zone at 71-74 mph. Also showed the ability to mix in the changeup down at 74-75 mph. Lowry is an arm that will be big for Prep if they're going to find success this year, and his outing against Good Counsel should build confidence for the duration of the season.


Kyle Pershin RHP/MIF (Marietta)

3.18.22 (Pitching): Got the start on the bump in their game against Good Counsel. Up-tempo delivery, working with pace and intent for the zone. The fastball came out of the hand well and worked both sides of the plate at 82-84 mph, showcasing some ride through the zone and missing a ton of bats early on. The curveball was thrown effectively with feel and some bite at 72-74 mph, mixing in a changeup at 78-79 mph.


3.18.22 (Hitting): A top of the order bat for St. John’s Catholic Prep, utilizing quick hands and a balanced whole field approach. Hits from a slightly crouched, open stance with some rhythm in the hands and a smooth back load. The bat path is level, consistently utilizing a line drive approach to the middle of the field. Gets out of the box well with some speed that can impact the game.
